I loved this small little museum of modern and contemporary art especially the wonderful Amadeo De Souza artwork! I had never heard of this artist before and so enjoyed the artwork by this fabulous artist. It’s a small museum but worth a visit while in town.

Although modern art aficionados, we only intended to pop in for a quick visit whilst sightseeing in this lovely small town. We ended up staying half the afternoon - the art was really that good at the Museu Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso. A few days later we visited the famed Serralves Foundation Collection in Porto. Frankly it is not nearly as good as this. The setting, in the old cloisters of Sao Goncalo church, is delightful – a pity the café was closed, or we might have stayed even longer.

Part of the collection consists of works by local artist Souza-Cardoso (1887 – 1918) who died young in the flu epidemic. His work is somewhat derivative, but excellent & highly entertaining. The majority of the current exhibition consists of dozens of other Portuguese modern & contemporary artists. I’d never heard of most of the names – but their work was absolutely gorgeous & very varied. I’d love to have some of it on my wall at home! We both just kept going round & saying – ‘Hey – have you SEEN this one!’ Have a look at the website – which is available in English - to see thumbnails of all the artists.

The collection, & its lovely setting, left us drooling! It’s worth quite a journey to visit and really made our holiday. A shame many come to the beautiful riverside town & most visit church next door – but don’t even think to enter the council owned museum in the cloisters. We’re pensioners and were charged exactly 0.5 Euro! Even full-price its just 1 Euro. This must be the best value in north Portugal! Even if you are not normally a modern art fan – don’t miss this.

Amadeo de Souza Cardoso was the most prominent portuguese painter of his generation. His artistic production is unbelievable considering that he dies at 31. During his stay in Paris he related with Modigliani, Delauny and other modernist. The museum beyond amazing Amadeo works have yet many contemporary works of great portuguese artists . It’s located in the beautiful monastery of St. Gonçalo and the visit is mandatory

Loved the building, loved the exhibitions, and particularly loved the art of Amadeo de Souza Cardosa. We hadn't heard of him before and that made for a joyous voyage of discovery. He died young at the age of 31 in 1913 but his works sit well in this old building renovated in very contemporary style.

Very interesting gallery. Work by Cardoso skilled and interesting if a little mannered. Graphic works rather eclectic but charming period pieces. Wonderful architecture from the original monastery. Great way to spend an hour.

The de Souza paintings were interesting but much of the exhibition was other Portuguese modern artists and we were not very impressed with those. It was worth a visit. Cost now 4 euros per person

We stopped by the museum to see a special exhibit by a local artist (Amedeo de Sooza-Cardosa). It was very special and well worth the visit. The other art in the museum was great as well.

Rooted in the ancient monastery, it is beautifully designed to present visitors with a wide range of artworks. Both exhibits we saw were well-detailed (audio-guide available) and all the rooms were wide and well lit. Will return, for sure, when new exhibits pop up!

Interesting but not too special to make a detour for. Nice art work that offer some information about the Portuguese artist. Costs only 1€/person, situated in an old monastery. If you come with a car, be careful, because the roads are very narrow and parking spaces are scarce.
