I was very disappointed with Strandhill. To get to the beach, you have to drive through a kind of new housing estate of poorly designed, unimaginative houses more suited to suburbia, to get to a small cul- de-sac of a car park by the beach, where all the parking spaces are blocked off. Cars are then forced to turn around and drive back to another ugly, unimaginative, treeless car park nearby. The small seafront area is crowded with badly parked cars and aimless people queuing for coffees or ice cream, because there is little else to do there.
Basically the whole place is a planning mess, with no vision, no beauty, no trees and no grassy areas to relax on. Even the views of the beautiful Knocknarae are spoilt by bungalow blight around its base. And the large beach is not much to look at either, particularly at low tide when acres of seaweed are exposed . The planners could learn a lot from places like Mullaghmore and Rosses point, where everything is planned on a human scale and are pleasant place to be.
It’s probably a surfers paradise (the place has a surplus of surf schools), but I’d say even the most avid surfer would be depressed by the dreary surroundings. For a more uplifting experience head for the nearby Kilaspugbrone which is wild, sandy and beautiful.

Went for a walk along Strandhill during a new year visit to Sligo and would highly recommend. Beach is quite hard to get onto but worth the effort. Area is very popular and has a lot of coffee shops but they are quite hard to get into as they are always packed.

Visited Strandhill for the first time on a blustery January afternoon. The crashing waves were amazing , we saw' no swimming' signs which would be a pity in summer months with the lovely long sandy strand, but with those waves I can see how it could be dangerous. Lovely coffee shops near the beach.

Super long beach suitable for surfing or body boarding. If you are into these you will have hours of fun. There are dangerous riptides but if you ask the guys doing the surfing courses they are brilliant with advice on safe times and places. Not for swimmers though. Super huge sand dunes at the back of the beach, great fun climbing these. Gorgeous promenade for a walk. Public toilets are hard to come by due to COVID-19 & I cringed when I saw portable toilets but they were smelling fresh & the cleanest ever experienced & fully stocked. Bins were emptied regularly, overall the area is very well kept. Really enjoyed our trip to Strandhill & will definitely return.

Although it was a wet and windy day. Nothing could take away from the beauty of this beach. Beautiful scenery of the surrounding mountains and hillsides. Lot of people walking the beach or surfing. Very clean beach

This beach was a little disappointing, very little parking available. Signs up recommending not to swim? Nice little places to get a coffee available on the promenade. Very busy but beach did look long and sandy.

Easy to get to from sligo town, lovely places to sit and watch the ocean. Nice cafe and bars close by to eat. Plenty of parking available in nearby parking lot if none available right beside the beach.
Not ideal for swimming, surfing is popular.

Beautiful beach with fantastic views.
Enjoyable walk along the golden sands.
No available parking besides beach but plenty of room in nearby carpark in village.
Seams to be the ideal spot for water sports as there was alot of this activity going on.
A short walk to the left and we practically had beach to ourselves!
A must visit if exploring the wild Atlantic way.

This was the first beach on my Wild Atlantic Way road trip. It was a great beach but I was maybe a little underwhelmed... Strandhill village seems to have been gentrified so much that it seems a bit detached from reality. A great beach for a good walk though.

One of my favorite places in Ireland, So many things to do here but my favorite is surfing here. Easy break with 3 or 4 spots but if its not surfable you can do some lovely walks to Killnabrone out past the local airport along the shoreline about 3+kms or walk in the other direction along the beach for as long as you want or take a track up to see Queen Mauve Grave on the top of Knocknarea about 6+km return.

Planning on coming to Sligo early November with baby toddler and hubby and looking for activities to keep family happy

Hi Sightseer. I agree with above {Karen B} walks on beach are lovely if weather is nice not so sure about other suggestions with small children . If you are staying in a hotel I am sure some have leisure facilities , havent traveled to Sligo with children s maybe I am doing it an injustice but may not be much suitable for small children at this time of year , it is great for adults for entertainment for all ages and genres of music but this is not much help , sorry
