The walks in the Forest park are well laid out with interesting trees and flowers and explanatory posters to guide you as what to look for. Plenty of insect life. I met a photographer who was taking pictures of dragon flies who has published books on all sorts of insects - wonderful conversation!
All our experiences were positive until I entered the wooden building houseing the toilet facility. This was very disappointing in this covid environment - no soap in the dispenser or hand sanitiser.. The paper towel bin was overflowing. It would appear that it is not maintained on a regular basis which is a pity as the facility is very useful especially if you have travelled from some distance.

The forest walks are nice, especially when sunny. However, there are some utterly stupendous and magnificent views if you know where to go on a good day such as Rinmaher point. It give's the set of LoTR in New Zealand a good run for it's money! The only downside to this is a distinct lack of signage but I'm not deducting any stars for that because it's fun to find stuff and get lost, well, as lost you can now with smart phones. This is great for couples as it can be very romantic, kids as an adventure and for dogs for walks. People we met on the trail were friendly and the forest was pretty clean. You can do short walks or long walks and do it such that you can start and / or finish at Portumna castle (via Lough Derg harbour) and get some lunch / dinner at the excellent cafe there.

Portumna Forest Park is right on my doorstep & most of the time I don't realise how lucky I am. In November 2019, I took up a challenge for Barnardos where I had to complete 300,000 steps in a month. Portumna forest park is where I did majority of the steps. I always do a basic 5km trail but one day I went off exploring and I couldn't get over where the trails led me. I had an idea of how big the park was but I didn't at the same time. Amazing views! One trail even brings you out and around the Portumna Golf Course. The trails aren't just for walkers/runners but for cyclists too. These trails can be found sometimes just off a walking trail but there are plenty of wooden signposts to point you in the right direction. There is free parking in the centre of the park. There is also a large map indicating the different trails that can be done ..easy, middle easy & hard(ish). I definitely know one of the trails is wheelchair accessible and there is a special mat covered area suitable for wheelchair users.

Walked from the harbour out to the park which was straightforward however the map of the walks was hard to follow. Signage on the tracks was very poor so we ended up asking for directions back to the start.

Another group we asked also mentioned the lack of signage and said they were just going to walk around.

Rinnmaher Point was one walk that was signposted and said to follow the white arrows. We walked out and back without seeing any arrows at all.

Well worth a visit but more effort should be put into signage, distances to travel and making the map more legible. We had just visited Killarney National Park which is well signposted and includes distances to the various spots.

We're just back from here and can,t wait to return. From the moment we arrived until we left Liz and Dick made us feel so welcome. For our entire stay they went above and beyond for us with Dick even performing a magic show. The hut we stayed in was immaculate and the beds where also comfortable. The kitchen and bathroom facilities where spotless and I have to thank the staff because they've taught of everything and made our trip completely stress free. They also have bikes and Bbq's to hire which is a great idea. We had a great holiday and I would definitely recommend Podumna village to everyone. Thanks again for a brilliant holiday and will definitely be returning sometime in the near future thanks again Alan and Margaret

Portumna Forest Walk offers a variety of walks varying in length and tailored to all levels. There are walks that are accessible for wheelchair users and buggies. It is a lovely peaceful area, very clean and offers an excellent opportunity to view wildlife and nature. There are cycle tracks through the park also.
Different walks can lead you to Portumna Castle and the Marina. It is a lovely safe space for families with wide open green fields offering an opportunity for picnics and BBQs. There are toilets on site also and parking is okay. On a sunny day you might find it difficult to find a parking space close to the amenity area. Overall a very nice place for a family day out.

I've visited many forest parks all over Ireland and, to me, Portumna Forest Park is definitely one of the very best. I feel lucky to have it so close to me.
In my opinion the best trails in the park are the ones furthest from the carpark, the ones running along the shores of Lough Derg. And also Beech Grove is another area that's well worth visiting. It definitely gets a thumbs up from my dog Zeus (see photo).. That place is awesome at this time of the year (autumn), although the track to get there is one of the only non-paved muddy tracks in the park.

This forest is also a good place for spotting wildlife with a pretty healthy population of many animals like fallow deer, red squirrels, pine marten and numerous species waterfowl.

In this part of Ireland, heavy woodland is few and far between. This is great for a long afternoon of wandering the many paths and exploring the beautiful scenery. The trails are well maintained and are easily accessible to wheelchairs and strollers. Plus its free!
