Another unique feature in Iceland due to meeting (separating) of American and Eurasian tectonic plates. Here, at Silfra you can dive between them.
Have in mind you can do that only with a tour operator.
However, you can walk to the site and visit it observing it from ground.

You could snorkel between the europe and America tectonic plates. Its the only place in the world where you could do something like that. You should arrange your your with some licensed operators here. They give you proper instructions and training and the required gear to do this adventure.

DO IT!!!! Yes it's cold, but only for a few minutes around your mouth and chin, it goes away quickly. You get a dry suit which keeps you warm. We did this Nov 8, snow on the ground, grey, dismal, windy, and SOOOOOOO glad we did, it's unreal! It the most beautiful blue, like being in the Carribean. The calm and peace you feel cannot be explained, and the view from the water is stunning! The mountains covered in snow and snow around you and you are snorkelling, your brain is confused. The staff with Artic Adventures were fabulous! So funny and helpful. The hot chocolate and cookies were a nice treat. Yes you will get wet but honestly, not bad at all. I would not recommend for kids or if you have issues with crapming, the current is strong to swim to the platform.

This is where people can snorkel and dive between the tectonic plates. We had no desire to do this ourselves, but we were curious to see other people doing it. We were driving the Golden Circle route, which includes Thingvellir National Park. The Silfra rift is in the national park. We parked in the P5 parking lot of Thingvellir National Park, and walked down the road to watch a group of scuba divers exit the water, and then a group of snorkelers go in. There was a parking area directly across the road from where you enter the water, but it was reserved for the diving tour operators. We originally didn’t think it was a worthwhile experience, as it was very expensive, and we knew there were no colorful tropical fish or corals to see, but after viewing the snorkelers & divers, we could understand that it could be an awesome experience. We got a kick out of just watching other people do it!

This was pretty much on the top of my list of things I wanted to do while visiting Iceland. And it did not disappoint!
We chose to do a day trip out of Reykjavík, but you could go on your own if you have a car rental. We did the day trip with Arctic Adventures that combined Silfra snorkeling with the Colden Circle tour.
Ricardo was our snorkeling guide, and he was amazing!
It was quite exhilarating to feel the cold water (I think it was 2C or 3C), even with the wetsuit.
They take lots of pictures for you under water, so you do not need to bring your own underwater camera. All the photos are posted on a weblink afterwards.
The water is so incredibly clear, and I was not expecting the vibrant colors of green and orange algae, in contrast to the blue water.

Snorkeled Silfra with tour company. Clear blue majestic water between the cathedral of tectonic plates. Breathtaking water with green moss and sand at the end.

Truly one of world’s great dive experiences. More than 100 meters of visibility. A bit of a hike in full dry suit from the “camp” to the entry point, but worth the effort.

The national park is part of the Golden circle, it has beautiful landscape and you get to see some amazing rock formations in the continental rift. We got a chance to snorkel in the Silfra fissure which is in between North American and Eurasian tectonic plates.
