This is the famous volcano that caused all the problems with air travel and pollution years ago when it erupted. As such, it was worth a look to say we saw it. Nothing is happening there at the moment, but it is impressive to see the size of the lava flow and the boulders that were tossed all over the place when it erupted.
Funny trivia: The volcano has a long name that is difficult to pronounce (unless you are Icelandic). So our guide told us that it's nickname is E15, meaning it's name starts with an E and is followed by 15 other letters.

Often hidden by clouds this volcano has done recent damage. Icelanders seem to take the danger of volcanic eruptions as just part of life. The beautiful farms and fields in the meadows below this mountain are serene and peaceful, yet could become an Icelandic Pompeii at any time. However, the scenery is amazing. There is a very good interpretive display along the road at a hotel/restaurant which gives a clear picture of just how large this last eruption was.

The highlight of our recent holiday in Iceland was a day we spent in a private jeep to see the Eyjafjallajokull volcano which erupted in 2010 causing havoc to airline flights across Europe. Our friendly and very knowledgeable driver Asgeir made sure our trip would be one we would remember for a very long time. The jeep took us across rivers and over volcanic terrain which a lesser vehicle would not have managed and we found ourselves in remote areas feeling as though we were the only ones on the planet. We drove to the edge of the glacier over what was once a huge lake but now filled with volcanic ash. Asgeir answered all our questions not only at the volcano but during the entire journey; a period of ten hours. The beauty of Iceland speaks for itself but Asgeir gave us a much deeper insight into this incredible country, it's culture, farming, economy and the adversity of it's people who live on one of the most unpredictable land masses in the world. The private tour was not cheap but we could not put a price on this incredible experience. Thank you Asgeir and thank you Mountain Taxis.

Another great Icelandic natural treasure. Eyjafjallajokull is huge and powerful. I think back to 2010 and all the flight cancelations this volcano caused. Seeing it in person is amazing.

We visited as part of a tour but due to the snowy weather couldn't go up, we saw a short film in the visitor centre and was amazed how the volcano caused so much devastation and how the community came together and revived the area, truly outstanding and amazed at the vastness of the volcano and to see it in is glory that caused all the fuss in 2010 and nearly stopped us going on holiday! Very impressive landmark!

Nice one to tick off the list! There was not visible red hot lava but a good viewpoint regardless..pretty cool to visit an active volcano!

A great lesson in the power of the 2010 volcano and the surrounding farmland. There is a great description and pictures of the volcano right on Highway 1. From this "historical Marker" point you have a great view of the volcano and the events of the eruption.

We viewed this volcano from the Lava Center roof. It was beautiful, and it was interesting to read about the history of the volcano.
