We booked the "Laki Craters Mountain Expedition" (super jeep tour) and were not disappointed: Our driver and guide, Trausti, took us up to Laki while giving us a lot of information (in English) about the craters, Mount Laki, the Laki fires, volcanos and Iceland in general. After a fun, wild ride through lava and across rivers we reached the parking ground next to Laki (There are a small info centre lead by friendly and helpful park rangers, a map and a toilet). After a 40 min hike we reached the top of Laki where we had a stunning view over the crater row just before some nasty clouds came in... Another short hike into a small crater was also quite fun.
After the lunch break, we hiked for another hour through spectacular lava formations. On our way back to Klaustur we stopped on a small hill to get a great view and later near the beautiful Fagrifoss. A short and easy hike over the wonderful canyon Fjaðrárgljúfur rounded up our trip.
Trausti was friendly, never rushing us and always ready to give us plenty of information. The tour started at 9 am at Hotel Laki or the N1 station in Kirkjubæjarklaustur, ran around 9 h and combined driving and (individual) hiking in almost equal amounts of time. We were six persons in total (which still leaves everybody with enough space in the car). Bring with you warm (wind- and rain-resistant) clothes as well as a camera and food for the day and you will have a lot of fun!
