Hveradalir thermal river was a highlight of our Iceland trip. The hike is a hilly 3.5K on a very smooth trail. There are no changing rooms, just a few x-shaped fences, but the treat of soaking in a steaming river on a cold day, looking at the beautiful mountains all around is unmatched.

I have travelled all over Iceland but this is one of the best places at all! It's a long way to get there , 150 km on a f road but the view that you will find it's something incredible . Red mountains, light blue river , smoke and ice ( on the mountains background ). Remember that is forbidden to walk out of the path such as in the most of Iceland . You risk to ruin a fragile enviroment just for a picture. Place extremely recommended!!

This is the trail you take up to the hot springs. It is nicely packed and smooth. It's a popular one, so be prepared for a crowd! There is a large parking lot that was mostly full when we arrived in the afternoon. Thankfully it had started to rain so the crowd thinned out. No facilities at the trail head! There was a coffee shop with an outdoor bathroom, but it was closed.

Great little town, all geothermal, amazingly full of green houses, gardens and hot springs. It’s a small town/big village which was hit by an earthquake in 2008. Wonderful exhibition in shopping centre featuring personal experiences and a video of bottle avalanche from security cameras in off-licence

We were not interested in going to a "commercial" hot springs with hundreds of people. The owners of our hotel recommended this hike to the hot springs. It was a 2.5 mile hike that was moderate to hard. There were not many people hiking or at the hot springs. There are a lot of surrounding trails if you want to do more hiking. There are wooden platforms/decking around the areas where they want you to go into the hot springs. There are screens that you can change behind but it is not private. My thought was the screens are more for wind protection when it is colder. This was definitely worth the hike for the experience! Beautiful views and experience... exactly what you expect Iceland to be!
