Staying in the hotel near here and after finding out about the museum off here we called in this morning. What a gem of a place. Absolutely amazing. Definitely a must visit on anyone's list whilst in Iceland. Hafsteinn certainly knew his rocks, minerals and gems. He is so passionate and you can clearly see he loves his job. Spent an hour talking us through the history of the collection and how it came about. Thank you Hafsteinn

Found this amazing family run display of stones and minerals found in Iceland. There are many beautiful artifacts and crafted goods. Admission is free. A must see on the golden circle.

Wonderful museum! We first learned about this wonderful museum through the "Museums in Strange places" podcast. When we arrived in Iceland, the Hveragerdi - Stone and Mineral Museum was a must see on our itinerary. The staff are knowledgeable, friendly, and kind. Our 5 year old, still talks about his visit, 4 months after returning home!

I recently visited the Stone and Mineral Museum in Hveragerdi and was astonished at the array of Mother Nature's fine garments and jewels found on display. Before I even stepped through the doorway into the museum, I was greeted and welcomed by a warm smile from Hafsteinn Thor, the manager. After a brief exchange of pleasantries, I began my tour around the museum. My eyes enveloped case after case, all neatly organized, displaying different breathtaking minerals and stones, ranging from petite pebbles to gigantic geodes. From pieces of amethyst to jasper, from Iceland spar to obsidian, this museum provided a diverse and powerful display of stones and minerals. The most impressive feature of the museum, in my opinion, was the selection of Icelandic stones and minerals available for purchase, collected piece by piece from Mother Nature herself by the owner(s) of the establishment (*cough* did I just hear somebody say obsidian, aka 'dragon glass'?!?! *cough*). My stop at this museum was a memorable one that brought a constant smile to my face and is a must see for collectors, enthusiasts, and those who appreciate the aesthetics of Earth altogether. Hafsteinn Thor (the manager), was more than helpful and knowledgeable and I left the museum with a greater understanding and appreciation for stones and minerals. If my feet grace the grounds of Iceland in the future, they will surely carry me back to this amazing museum.

I specifically went to this destination to buy authentic gifts from Iceland. Specifically Icelandic rocks. They have a good selection and the Manager, Hafsteinn Thor was extremely helpful and knowledgeable. The museum is amazing!!! I will return here the next time in Iceland. I highly recommend anyone who is interested in rocks and gems to stop here. I felt more comfortable in knowing these are actual stones from Iceland versus buying them from a third party like eBay or amazon. Thank you Hafsteinn Thor for you time, kindness and passion for what you do and a special thank you for the gift. It made my visit to Iceland a memorable one.

Via the entrance inside the N1 gas station, you enter an intriguing museum about Icelandic stones and minerals. With many stones on display, accompanied with Icelandic birds and objects from everyday life, this museum is certainly worth a visit! I loved the chat with the owner and his son, with all his lively stories! I will certainly drop by to see the evolution of the museum next time I drive by!

Private collection run by family. It was closed although it was supposed to be open. Asgeir who worked at the gas station called them and told us to come back in 3 hours. He also showed us where to hike and gave us a map. Five stars for Asgeir!

Hi Kandofrank I'm very sorry for this inconvenience. We don't have any staff members because this is a small family run exhibit and if I need to run out for errands it's simply not possible to get someone to fill in every time. I have a message on the door informing people of this matter (with all my contact details) and most people understand completely and are very considerate. Hope you took time to read it. We have surely done our best to keep the museum running for 2 years now, with free admission, educating kids, teenagers and adults about the vast geology of the island, upholding great service levels and being open every day! Now we are also going into the winter opening hours and for the first time since we started the opening hours have changed: Mondays 12-5pm Tuesd.-Friday 9am-5pm Saturday 12-5pm Sunday Closed Ásgeir is a good friend of mine and is always willing to help out and I'm glad he saved your day. I'll make sure he'll get his five stars. :) Wishing you a fulfilling and positive life. Sincerely, Hafsteinn Thor and The Ljósbrá Family

I really came upon this little museum by chance. I went to this gas station to be picked up for South Coast tour and went inside just to stay warm. The son of the family who own the gas station runs it and was giving a very informative tour when I arrived. It is a very fascinating little place and although I was a bit preoccupied with watching out for my bus, I found a lovely piece of Obsidian fashioned as an arrow head. I enquired if he had one on a neck string like some other gems. He didn't but explained how I could do it myself easily. I bought it, maybe the start of a jewelry making career! Obsidian, commonly found in Iceland is also called Dragon Glass - which I like better.
Lovely, gentle and interesting - the little museum and the owner, I thought.

Hi Rebecca We are so glad that you found your stay here enjoyable and fascinating. I hope that the Dragon Glass will give you inspiration to make some beautiful jewelry. It would be lovely to see the end result of the necklace so please send me a picture when it's done. ;) Wish you all the best. Sincerely, Hafsteinn Thor and The Ljósbrá Family

I had so much fun looking around this museum. Hafsteinn was very warm and welcoming, and it was a joy to hear about how his family collected all the treasures. I bought a wonderful handmade wool sweater and receive compliments every time I wear it. Stop here if you can!
