Litlanesfoss is the starter for what is a stunning pair of waterfalls. The hike is challenging in parts but nowhere near impossible and much of the hardest climb is right at the start.
Once you’ve got over the initial hump (pun intended) you’re greeted with basalt columns and a snowy bowl crowned by the waterfall.

The car park is a little camouflaged but it’s close to where google maps will take you.

Take it slowly, but it is worth the 30 minute each way climb/walk to see the Litlanefoss fall.

This is the smaller of the two falls (Hengisfoss fall is a further 30 minute walk), but in many ways is the more impressive as it has great basalt rock columns and formations either side of the fall.

The round trip to Litlanesfoss would have taken us an hour with average fitness, but we took 2 hours to see both falls and had plenty of photo stops.

A steep but built hiking trail leads to the waterfall. Amazing basalt columes surround the waterfall. If you go further, you can also see Hengifoss.

Easy access, trail well maintained. Luckily that snow was melting, so plenty of water cascading down the 100 + meters. Parking about 100 meters.

The trail is quite steep and not suitable for elders and those with health limitations. The steep angle is mainly for the lower waterfall of Litlanesfoss. You can continue to climb but only up to a little barrier rope with the note in which it declares as closed path due to risk of drop of rocks. In this point you can take a photo of the upper waterfall from this quite distant point. The view looking down is amazing. It is about one hour to climb slowly the full length up to the barrier and about half of the time to reach down back to the parking place.

My wife and I traveled on holiday to eastern Iceland and visiting Hengifoss was on our must see list.

We hiked the Hengifoss Trail and came upon Litlanesfoss. Incredible, especially given the amazing basaltic columns.

The pictures do not do the views in person credit. Absolutely beautiful and amazing!!!

This waterfall was spectacular. It was on the Hengifoss trail and simply stunning. The basalt columns were reminiscent of Svartifoss. A must see.

Car parking at the base of the falls, at the side of the river fall out into the lake. This cut away gorge in basalt column cliffs gives you a different perspective at each view point up the climb. A clearly marked path takes you on a steady climb up past Jonsfoss, onto Litlanesfoss & upwards to Hengifoss. The falls cut & turn through the rocks as they fall. When you come to the final basin in the gorge, you can walk along side the flow & walk to the base of Hengifoss. A good hike with spectacular views along the valley & lake at the top.

This is a wonderful road provided you're willing to put up with the gravel road and the speeding idiots. The views are spectacular and well worth the effort. Vistas, running streams, waterfalls, black sand beaches, they're all there.

Just of road 931 with a decent parking lot, toilet and garbage bins you can walk an steep hill to the waterfall. The path is challenging, but worth it.
