Lagarfljót looks like a lake but is actually a river and, according to legend, it is the home of the Lagarfljótsormur, or Lagarfljóts-wyrm. It is grayish in color because the water in it is glacial runoff. There are plenty of enjoyable places to walk down to it and look around, perhaps the nicest being Atlavík in Hallormsstaður. The drive around the “lake” is nice in good weather and there are lots of things to see and do along the way, including Hallormsstaður forest, Hengifoss and Litlanesfoss, and Vallanes. Skriðuklaustur is also not far out of the way on that drive.

Lagarfljot is actually a river located near Egillsstadir. The landscape is magnificent, as is the whole of Iceland. Legend has it that a serpent called Lagarfijótsormurinn lives in the depths of this lake/ river. Access is easy.

this is the third biggest lake of the whole country; drive along the scenic route and you won't be disappointed at any time of the year.

This glacier-fed lake is lovely. The drive on each side is a must. Lots to see along the way and picnic areas and short hikes.

We stopped here mainly because it wasn't far out of the way for us and we figured we'd check it out on the off chance that we catch a glimpse of the Lagarfljót Worm. Alas, we didn't see the worm, but the area area is beautiful nonetheless. There are many beautiful areas in Iceland though, so this one isn't really worth going too far out of your way to see unless you're just hoping you might happen upon the worm like we were.

We drove around the lake from Egilsstaddir calling in at points of interest on the way. It is a pleasant drive with little traffic. The softer inland water makes an interesting contrast to some of the grander landscape seen elsewhere. No sign of the Wyrm. Plenty of places to pull over and enjoy the view and picnic.

The river and the string of lakes that makes up Lagarfljot is one of Iceland's biggest watercourses and a large water catchment area of 53 square kilometers and a depth of 51 meters average. The locaols claim it contauins a serpentine monster called the Lagarfljoyt Wyrm which was not evident when visited before or after dinner. The entire area is not that impressive but go up the hill towards Seydisfjordur and the world changes to spectaular scenery.

when it was snowy and cloudy but it still was picturesque, perhaps more so with dark and white contrasts.. However, no monster sightings. Worth a drive.

Beautifull scenery af a long lake near the town of Egilsstadir. The east side is planted with pine trees, with al lot of scatered chalets. It looks al little like Austria or Switzerland.
The west side is more rough , grassland and rocks. The hike by Hengifoss is very advisebly, but not an easy walk ,very steep! But its worth it.

The road is good all around the lake. A nice campground with a friendly warden is near the south end of the lake on the east side.
