- Jocelyn BSaskatoon, Canada13 contributionsNeat and very quick stop to see some local art!We visited this outdoor exhibit on a *very* rainy and windy day in September. However, it was worth a quick stop to view the eggs that were made by a local artist in ode to all of the birds found in Iceland. We spent about 15 minutes walking along the harbour before we were uncomfortably cold and ready to move on - would have spent more time in the area on a sunny day!Visited September 2023Traveled with familyWritten March 2, 2024

A short paved sidewalk from town along the water. It is well worth the short walk and at the end the lighthouse may be seen.Visited August 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten August 13, 2024

- Richard WPenn Valley, California862 contributionsSmall town with lots of unique things to see, including granite eggs along the water. While in this little town we visited the Rock collection, The Tank-a large steel tank formerly used to store fish oil and now hosts performing artists and a beautiful display of large granite eggs representing the eggs of Icelandic birds. Very unique and shows the commitment to the arts of this town. The entire town has adopted a cultural trend they call "Cittaslow" which is dedicated to the promotion of sustainable living and improving the quality of life for the residents and that seems to include a sense of everything is unrushed and mellow.Visited July 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten September 6, 2024

I had this on my "might see" vs. "must see" list for Djupivogur. Glad we saw it. Giant granite egg sculptures representing bird species found in the area. Neither my wife nor I are really bird watchers - but we got a kick out of seeing these.

The eggs are great! I was admiring them from the kayak on Arctic fun kayak tour. The sculpture was made by local famous artist Sigurður Guðmundsson from Chinese granit in 2009. They are representing 34 eggs of the birds that are nesting in Djupivogur area. Eggs matches shape and proportion of natural eggs only in a bigger scale. First egg belongs to red throated diver wich is official bird of Djupivogur. The puffins egg is the last one closest to the open ocean.

It's a cool thing to see. After we stayed in Hofn we drove along the south east shores to a town called djupivogur and there were these eggs. I don't know what purpose they serve but apparently they resemble eggs from Icelandic birds. It's easy to miss but they are really cool marble eggs.

A nice place to visit, if you have enough time. You are in a very industrial area of town . The eggs are such a cool concept and we enjoyed the visit but I just wish the area around it was more scenic. It’s worth the view if your in the area. Easy access with the car.

On our way to the Eggs of Merry Bay, Gledivik, we happened across a big old fish factory in Djupivogur, which was in use as an art exposition hall. We addressed two gentlemen, who were basking in the sparse warm sunshine on little folding chairs in front of the Braedslan hall. They turned out to be two of the main artists, Sigurdur Gudmundsson and Thor Vigfusson. Sigurdur and Thor gave us a wonderful tour of the Rolling Snowball 9 contemporary visual art exhibition, and explained the philosophy behind the underlying Chinese European Art Center initiative. We spent two wonderfully rich hours in and around the exhibition hallin excellent, expert company. A final picture of the artist with our daughter provided exiting tangible footage for her next art project at school. Super location, WELL WORTH A VISIT!

Djupivogur is a town you would pass through on your way to circumnavigating Iceland. It can be a nice place to take a driving break. You will see in the travel literature the Eggin i Gledivik sculpture by Sigurð Guðmundsson. It is a bunch of polished granite eggs on pedestals. Technically, it is considered art. I don't personally see any art in the whole thing, but apparently others do. If you are in town, drive down the road to see it. You might as well as long as you are in town. Don't bother to go out of your way to see it unless you are an art nut.

Interesting statues of eggs of birds that live or visit Iceland. This is maybe the only thing to see in this town, a qyick stop if you're just heading through. Beautiful view over the ocean as well.

Nice spot but not really sure what it is and it is not worth a detour.
The area though is stunning!
You can see it on the way without entering the village.

Hi, how far is it to walk from svartifoss to get a good view of the Sjonarsker glacier? Thanks, Jason
Written February 5, 2015
Hi Jason
The distance from Svartifoss to Sjonarnipa, with a spectacular view over the Skaftafellsjokull glacier, is about 2km. We did this as part of a circular walk route S6 which is 7.4km long. A map of this route (and others) is available in the Skaftafell visitor centre. The walk took us about 3 hours, and at times it was quite strenuous. It was also summertime so, although cold, there was no snow on the ground.
Best wishes, Laurie
