We stumbled upon this one as we were driving up north east on the Ring Road. I saw a glimpse of the falls from the ring road and we made the turn to the steep/almost paved road toward the falls. We actually ended up driving all the way up to the Fossardalur Campsite (hint: super clean restrooms there) hunting for the falls! Very picturesque views from up there - different from what you see while driving on the ring road. On our way down, we finally saw them and stopped at the viewing point right in front of the falls. Noone there. It was beautiful. Ended up spending 30+ minutes on the detour, but well worth it.

We drove up the steep road on a Dacia Duster (4wd).

This was a quick stop for us while driving around Iceland. It was there and I wanted to see a waterfall. Its was pretty powerful and these two falls sort of jutting down. The rock back drop was cool and got to see some of that famous Icelandic blue water. GPS sort of took us to a parking lot down below but you can't see the falls well. Drive up the road and park on top of the hill. Not a big parking space but can hold a few cars. Across is a walk way and viewing area of the falls. I am glad we stopped.

This rather small waterfall counters the theory 'size matters'. Located northeast of the delightful town of Djupavogur, the drop is just 15 meters/49 feet but it is the surrounding landscape that makes it stunning. The gorge is twisted. The lagoon at its base is serene. You can walk up toward the top, following a path through young pine forest. That it is an out of the way location will guarantee you a more intimate experience with few other tourists around. The place is excellent for photography.

There are 2 viewing areas for the falls. The lower one has easy access and flat gravel parking for about 20 cars. It's not a great view from here, but a nice resting area for a picnic. Read the information signs.
The upper viewing area is after travelling a steep, skinny road with a blind hairpin turn at the top. I was hoping that I would not meet a tour bus on his way down.
There is parking for about 4 cars at the top. A short walk over to the viewing platform gives you a good view.

Winding along the Eastern Fjords can be a bit monotonous albeit its beauty! This falls is out of sight from Route 1. Making our way anticlockwise along the Ring Road, Route 1, we slowed down as our GPS read t turn off to the left at the junction immediately after the bridge. We took the steep road up the hill to a small parking lot ( if you can call it one) facing away from the hill to the plains below. From here we can hear the roar of the falls. A short walk toward the loud roar is an observation platform where the falls framed by huge vertical rock faces come into full view. It looks quite extraordinary and out of place as everything around it appears to be so arid, except for the spares stunted trees near its top right!
Wonderful!

impressive series of wild water falls close to junktion highway 1 - 939. Not so overcrouded. Two ways to go - left hand side gravel road to have a view from below. right hand gravel road leads to views from above.

This is right off Ring Road. There are 2 parking lots to park, get out, and enjoy scenery. The first is on one side of the bridge, very flat Road. There is a bench if you would like to rest or snack. There is a turnstile to go through that brings you closer to the river. Great views of the mountains. The second parking lot is located a few meters down the road and go up the very steep hill. There is room for about 3-4 cars. The walk to the waterfall is about 20 meters.

For those with toddlers, no need for stroller or backpack carrier for this one. Short enough to walk or carry.

Suggested duration: 10-15 minutes.

Just northeast of Djupavogur, we found this gem , it is only a small waterfall by Icelandic standards but it was interesting none-the-less, it surges down a steep ravine and we stopped at the bottom to see it emerge from the small gap in the rock and then drove up the steep road to the top to see it dive down.
There was no one around is was a pleasure to just wander around here and soak in the wilderness
