Similar kind of thing to the Kerid Crater on the Golden Circle, which, if you have already seen that, you probably could skip here. That said, this is free (unlike Kerid). You can hike a quarter of the way round the crater off to the right of the car park if you like. I didn’t bother & was happy with the view from the car park. This crater lake was created during the Myvatn fires of 1724-29.

Iceland is a country with many natural beauties and the Viti Crater is one of them. This huge crater arose from a volcanic eruption and within it formed a lake with turquoise blue water. Access is easy from the parking lot and has free entrance. Wear clothes and shoes suitable for walking and enjoy the beautiful look.

A short walk led us to the crater lake. The lake was tranquil. Despite the wind that day, we walked along the path to view the lake from different angles. At the end of the path, we discovered another smaller crater lake.

We agreed to a 5 min stop between visiting Leirhnjukur and the Myvatn baths as that is all the time we had. And it turned out that was all the time we needed to see a small blue crater lake. Its a nice colour but it isn't worth a special trip.

Definitely a must stop when heading to Myvatn. This crater is beautiful, most of the year surroundings are already covered in snow and it looks amazing. At the same time you can admire the geothermal powerplant that is right underneath the hill.

It’s quite a drive up to this feature through some amazing and extraordinary landscapes, but when you arrive there’s not much to do here other than peer into the turquoise water below, and take a short stroll along a section of the crater rim. Not even any information boards. The Kerid Crater (on the Golden Circle) is much more interesting with amazing coloured rocks, and you can walk into the bottom.

A blue background
An earthy outline
A short walk to go around the place
And have a view that makes us widen our eyes
Here nature has colors that make happy
Beautiful road that climbs a bit
Make a stop at the krafla that deserves, because here too the show is "smoky"
By the colors and "mist" showing the heavens

I'll confess... this was on the list of things to do. It was snowing. A lot. Again. We pulled up, thinking we were in the parking lot, bundled up, and headed out for the short walk to the crater. As it turns out, we weren't in the parking lot, the road was closed, and we had a trek to make. Off we went up the hill. After trudging for what seemed a very long time, we turned around and realized we hadn't come very far. We exchanged knowing looks. Turned around and went back to the car. Might be better in summer (I think they have a summer??)

We thought this was a little under-whelming. The blue lake in the center is pretty, but it wasn't as great as I expected. If you have extra time, it's worth a stop and a climb up. The valley is also interesting with the steam pipes and power plant.

Nice crater, you can walk around it and even hike on top of it.There is a hiking path around the summit for which you need approx. 15 minutes. Beautiful crater lake in emerald color, just within 10 minutes drive from Myvatn. From the summit you can admire the vast volcano area and the nearby geothermal power plant. The drive here is a scenic drive on paved roads over craters and geothermal area. Easily accessible by car . The parking is close to the crater. Nice place and worth seeing.
