There is a parking fee of ISK 1000 here payable by the app, not sure if there was a pay kiosk. It is only a short 10 minute walk up to the crater for the view but it is quite steep and gets steeper half way up. The path is on black shingle so proper hiking shoes are a good idea as it could get slippery the steeper it gets with a shoe that has no grip. You will be bombarded by the “midgies” which are everywhere no matter how warm or cool it is, the dam things are quite hardy. The main thing is to keep moving or stand where there is a slight breeze, they don’t like breeze (keep your mouth shut unless you fancy extra protein)!! . Once at the top of the crater you can walk around to admire the views on the one side and the dark black hole of the crater on the other. You can hike a little higher if you feel like it but don’t really think it is necessary. Allow an hour total stay here.

We made it half way up the climb before it became far too slippery to continue. Even the first half was quite treacherous. I’m sure it would be lovely in summer/ warmer months, but the conditions were too risky. We asked someone else coming down if it was worth continuing and he said it wasn’t anything spectacular. Make a call based on the day and weather! Parking available but WCs were closed.

Quite a large crater! It isn't easy, but there is a dirt path that has been worn down to climb to the top of the crater. It goes up and up and up. It took awhile to get up the courage to climb to the top, not a fan of heights. Once reaching the top, the views were incredible and there is a little distance that can be walked before the path narrows around the rim. The path is about 2.5 miles, so it does take some time. The heights were too much, so did not explore the rim around the crater any more than for just a few photos and headed back down and down and down. Again, not the easiest climb either direction. If you don't like heights, you may or may not want to make the climb and you definitely won't want to do the hike on the rim around a very narrow path with a large drop-off on either side. Okay for pictures, but not okay for an hour plus dizzying hike. Once you are back down in the parking lot, you'll appreciate the effort it takes to visit this crater and see the views all around from the top.

Do not let the rutted approach road put you off, the views from the summit are well worth it. Complete the rim walk and enjoy the expansive views in all directions. We completed this in April and whilst the path around the crater rim was easy walking the short walk up still had a long icy stretch. Walking boot crampons / spikes helped make light work of the icy path.

This hike was very cool, but was not for the faint of heart. There's a parking lot at the bottom of the crater and a small building with restrooms and information. From the parking lot, you can hike up the crater. It is very steep and there are no handrails or places to stop and sit along the way. You just have to keep going. It's not a long hike, and only took us about 20 minutes. But boy did we feel it in our quads for the rest of the day and the next day.

The view from the top is stunning, both of the crater and the surrounding area. You can hike around the rim of the crater if you wish, but we were exhausted and decided to just take pictures and head back down.

A good hike up and we didn't go all the way around as our group includes some... senior individuals who weren't up for the full route around. Also because of the fact it is loose gravel and ash... avoid if windy. IMO if you have limited amount of get up and go, then save your energy for Dimmuborgir.

This is a crater you can hike to the top of and once at the top around the crater. There is a path up to the top, it’s about a 450 foot climb up average climb for someone used to hiking. The view at the top let view down into the. Crater which was basically volcanic ash.

If you come to Myvatn you have to climb Hverfell, it looks just like the volcanoes you made in school. Short gravel road to a large car park. It’s a good path to the top, one straight line, we didn’t struggle, but were humiliated by people double our age marching it. Great view from the top and you can do a lap if you want, maybe 3Km around the rim. There is a visitor centre at the bottom which was closed when we went which was a major disappointment as I was busting.

A steep climb up to the crater over sharp-edged lava sand, but the view from above is impressive. You can circle the crater or build a small stone tower as a memento. Beware of the extreme gusts of wind. Not recommended with young children, when it is windy - they are blown around and the lava sand is everywhere!

Look the views from the edge of the crater are amazing and the dormant volcano is pretty cool on its own. However, the climb is tough on an old man. Twenty + degrees of incline over loose gravel. Take your time going up and watch your step. The views will be worth it.
