Kastoria one of the most important and beautiful cities of the Greek Macedonia Greece 🇬🇷. A great lake district and a beautiful city by the lake. Gives you an island image of the city and the lake surrounding the kastorian peninsula. A unique place to stay and enjoy the stay in one of the hotels and pansions in the city.

One of the prettiest places I have ever seen. Perfect location, hours of walking and true relaxation. Kastoria, as a city and a waterfront for a lake, is fantastic in itself. I will come back . I will come back!

What a breathtaking landscape. I would recommend a drive around the lake, with some stops to explore the nature! If you are lucky with the weather this is a plus. Its a place where the mind stops and the dreams start.

We came to Kastoria mid April. The weather was cold, but sunny - perfect for walks.
Firstly,we had a day long walk starting walking along the lake towards the Dragon Caves. The walk itself was magnificent with a plethora of rare birds to observe as well pelicans, lovely promenade, cafes, trees, mountain views across the lake. We saw a fisherman on the way who just came back from the morning fishing with a great catch, selling inexpensively freshly caught fish to the locals. Pelicans surrounding the fisherman waiting for some fish. He didn't disappoint them and pelicans fought over the scarce fish.
On the way we passed by some old Byzantine churches - closed, but no less interesting to see.
It takes 3km to walk to the Dragons caves. We had a guide to take us to the caves, which have 6 million old stalagmites and stalactites. The ticket costs 6€, 4 for kids. The visit is highly recommended as the caves will take your breath away!
We then continued walking on the lovely road and came to the Mavriotissa Monastery - a beauty on its own. There is a cafe nearby, if you need refreshments. We then followed an advice from the monk and took a romantic foot path up the hill (St Elias) (sign posted for further attractions). You need to have good walking shoes to do this walk up though, but the views were amazing! We saw some birds of prey in the sky and many very pretty meadow flowers.
We then came to another beautiful monastery on the top of the mountain, which was closed, but never mind! - the view was totally worth all the effort! You can see all Kastoria squeezed between two lakes.
We just couldn't believe why such a beautiful place so little known in Britain - it is no less attractive than Lake Garda.
There is a super restaurant on the top of the mountain - the Agios Athanasios, with the view which is very hard to beat plus a wood fire and tasteful décor. We had a wonderful lunch there, in addition the staff were very friendly and helpful, who translated us the menu (in Greek only) - all food was super fresh and tasty (octopus, tomatoes, cucumber, lettuce, chips with oregano, zucchini , tzatziki - yum!). We then waked down the hill on the narrow foot path, visited one more monastery which impressively had its own football pitch. We ended up near our hotel Filoxenia, which was handy.
Great walk!

One beautiful place that they let it to its own destiny. They dont know how to speak to the turists , they dont smile when tou go to there shops. I dont know if the crisys is the problem but the people make one town and not the goverment. They are very lucky that they have all this nature beauty and they fill unlucky because they dont sell like the old times.

Lake and the city can’t be divided. They are so well connected and indeed are just one. So a review for Kastoria lake it’s indeed a review for the city too as the opposite it will be the same as well. Views of the lake from above of hill around the city is so magnificent and give great peace specially at the heavy days when you need a brake and some broader space in front of your eyes. Getting closer is so hard and disappointed. Water is not clean and my fear is that this beautiful area is going to die slowly. I do not know how can be so green and party dirty. Someone should pay clearly emergent attention. Just be satisfied that the lake is there and pelicans are flying smoothly and friendly in from of your eyes, that not enough. Lake is crying for care and help!!

This is by far a very picturesque region. The lake is amazing. It is peaceful, and serene. Geese are everywhere and used to humans. Lovely cafes and restaurants along the lake which exudes relaxation. If you want to get away from the bustle of the touristy beaches, then head inland to this lovely town. Take the time to walk along the lake's perimiters and take in it's beauty.

We drove from Thessaloniki so not sure what the transport would be like. Perhaps check tours bus companies if you are not driving.

A must see for any traveler. Great for families, and any age group. Lots of restaurants and bars. Parking is very accessible.
