About
The Byzantine Museum of Kastoria, which occupies premises built in 1985, was inaugurated in 1989 and remained open until June 2013. During that period it housed an ‘interim’ exhibition in one of its three galleries. The new exhibition material focuses mainly on panel icons and sanctuary doors, of which there are seventy-five (75); there are also five (5) fragments of frescoes, and thirty (30) other items, examples of the minor arts. The inclusion of this material was reviewed and proposed in a report based on the following principles, consonant with contemporary museological and museographic practice: • Connection with the social and economic context of the period that permitted the painting of the icons and the system of values they serve. • Emphasis on the uninterrupted consequence of the city of Kastoria, which, its peripheral position notwithstanding, flourished in both the Byzantine and the post-Byzantine eras (9th-19th century). • Creation of a museum devoted exclusively to Byzantine and post -Byzantine icons, documenting both the unique character of the icons of Kastoria and the multiple aspects of their function in the Byzantine world, which are among the most important sets of icons in the world. • Organisation of the exhibits in direct association with the churches from which they came, as a spur for the creation of an archaeological walking route in Kastoria, a city that is considered as a prime example of a living, open-air museum. • Creation of a modern, scientifically serious but at the same time visitor -friendly museum.

With a ticket of 4 euro you can see old holy paintings from 14th and 15th centuries.
Don’t expect to see something else in this museum.

Great experience

The whole town of Kastoria is a museum, on a peninsula surrounded by lakes and greenery. The visit should start with a well-organized Byzantine Museum, where you will receive a guide and keys to some of the churches located in the city. There are more than 70 small churches in the city, built from the 10th to the 19th century. It is a treasure trove of Byzantine art.

A Byzantine museum in a Byzantine city
Jul 2019
A unique museum in its kind. The museum stands at the highest point of the city, in Dexamenis Square (Platia Dexamenis), It has been open since 1989. It's using a modern approach to present its exhibits. It has a collection of some 700 icons from Kastoria’s 75 Byzantine and post-Byzantine churches, and almost all of them have been restored and cleaned by the museum’s specialists.

A rarity, a treat

I believe it is difficult to get even a glimpse of the byzantine era, unless you see a lot of staff together (like the exhibition at the NY Metropolitan Museum for 843-1261 AD). The Kastoria area was such an important place during the late (I think) byzantine years, so there are so many exquisite icons in the museum that you finally get the spiritual aspect of the byzantine years. And you also get how important this city was: now just a border town, but then located near a passage to the balkans and beyond.

Remarkable museum with bilingual explanations all over

In a modern fully air-conditioned museum a very rich collection of icons with explanatory panels helps you understand the specificity of the role of icons in the orthodox religion, something often baffling for outsiders. Some schools such as the Cretan and the Kastorian one are well represented as well as some specific icon painters, where we learned that some worked in the best Italian workshops in the Renaissance.

This museum has wonderful Byzantine icons from the many churches in the region. The rooms are laid out superbly and all the details are in English. We learnt a lot about the techniques of icon painting and there is a good film at the end of the tour. A must visit. Entrance fee was €2 for Seniors.

We were fortunate to arrive just as a tour of Byzantine churches was leaving. The museum provides much information about the churches, their history and significance.

Compact history!

The Byzantine museum of Kastoria is definitely a pleasant surprise for every visitor!
Its tremendous collection is presented in a functional manner that provides a good flavor of the glorious Byzantine art developed in Kastoria during medieval centuries. It is worth mentioning that aforementioned art concentration contributed in the establishment of Kastoria city as one of the major centers of Byzantine art along with Constantinople, Thessaloniki and Ravenna.
