We booked the hiking tour and the sunset tour to do in one day as the website suggested. We were very disappointed with both. If you rent a car and drive there is no need to do either of these tours. We had rented a car and drove from Athens, which was long but relatively easy. We did not realize all the monasteries are very close together (probably should have done more research). If you have your own car you can visit all 6 easily in one day and get to go inside (except for any closed on the day you visit). The “hiking” tour was more like a nature tour. Nothing like what the video on their website depicts. You take 2.5 hours to “walk” less than 2.5 miles. It was more like a stand around and hear about random plants than a hike. The guide was wonderful on the hike and you could tell he is very passionate about what he does but he literally stopped about every 15-20 steps and then talked for a lengthy amount of time. We are active individuals and thought we would actually be hiking according to everything we read. I can’t remember the last time it took me 2.5 hours to walk 2.5 miles. It is not a difficult walk either. You also don’t really see much of the monasteries. You drive to one with everyone in the beginning, spend 45 minutes there and then that’s it. The nature walk begins after that. You do walk by one other monastery at some point that apparently closed during covid but the guide doesn’t even really tell you about it. This tour felt like a waste of time. We could have visited all the monasteries on our own and had time to explore around on foot on our own if we hadn’t booked this tour. We contemplated skipping the sunset tour after the morning experience but kept thinking it would surely be better. Not so. The hiking tour they were 30 minutes later than what they told us picking us up and the sunset tour they were almost 50 minutes later than what they told us. That’s a lot of wasted time standing around waiting on them. We never had any confirmation of where they were even picking us up so upon arrival in Meteora we drove to their office to confirm. They seemed very unorganized. The sunset tour should more appropriately be called the Instagram tour. Again, you visit one monastery on the inside. They tell you that you will see all 6 and by that they mean in a drive by. You either drive by altogether some of them or you stop and they allow you to take pictures from viewing spots. Visiting closed monasteries was not what we had planned. We were not there for the instagram photo ops. They literally would ask you if you like the pictures when you got back on the bus. We noticed the closing time of the monasteries we visited after closing and with better timing you could have gone in more than one. Very poor time management. After visiting the Byzantine church at the end we decided to bail on the sunset portion of the tour and go on our own. They just want to drive you to a huge rock with beautiful views that had tons of people on it. We went back to our place, got in our own car and drove all around. We had gorgeous views from many different points without all the crowds. In the end we felt that booking these tours did not give us the chance to really see the monasteries, which is part of the point in going to Meteora. If we had it to do over again we would go see each of them on our own and not have wasted our time or money on these tours.

This was my third visit to Kalambaka and Meteora, a magical place where I admire the wonder of nature and the perseverance of human will. It was the second time a booked a tour with Meteora Thrones, a very professional agency. The guide, named Sarah, was knowledgeable and accurate, kind and timely, and fluent in Spanish. Highly recommended!

Good overview of monasteries in the Meteora area with longer visits to 3 out of 6 of them. Knowledgeable guide and professional staff for large bus trip.

Sight seeing of monasteries built on top of rock. Explanations by tour guide were pretty good but confusing and inaccurate in places. Need to give info about inside of monastery e.g the bands of metal and slab of wood that were seen in all the monasteries. Stops to take photos were plenty. We had a massive bus and the constant manoeuvring in and out of the most difficult of situations was interesting to watch but also a bit stressful. Bis driver was skilled!
