About
The Museum Ribe's Vikings is beautifully situated in central Ribe overlooking the river Ribe A. Experience the Viking era and the Middle Ages. Thousands of artefacts found during archaeological excavations in the area tell the interesting history of Ribe from the year 700 to the year 1700. Step aboard a reconstructed Viking ship like a true Viking setting out to explore the world. Then, after just a few steps, you can stand on a street corner of Ribe in the year 1500. Watch a film about Ribe's Vikings, excavate in the archaeological sandpit, explore the large museum shop or visit the activity room "Dagmar and Valdemar", where you can dress up in costumes, joust like a medieval knight or step into a medieval home. Children under 18 years free admission.

Museum is small but really interesting and covers viking and medieval time periods. All kind of handcrafts represented and also story how people lived in that time. They also show movie about archeological work mixed with historical reenactment. In second floor there is also denmark flag exhibition but sadly it was only in dansk.

Small museum that shows the life in Ribe around the time of the viking age.
Text is provided in 3 languages, Danish, English and German.

Very friendly staff, with a gift shop.

Time needed to visit this museum , i would say 1 to 1 and a half hours.
Parking in front of the museum.

They have an area with some stuff for children , i would say for the age below 12.
Also perfect to spend time on a rainy day.

We were on a Ghost Walk, which is a tour the Museum provides. I have been to many Ghost Walks around the world, and this was the worst sadly, because the guide was an elder gentleman, who was really nice. But first of all the state that this is not a City Tour, but it is actually. When I am on a Ghost Walk I don't want to hear about the buildings and when they were built, I want to hear about Murders, Whitches and Ghosts, I want blood and cruelty, it is not ment to be nice and pleasant. There was NO Ghost stories about any hauntings, there was only 1 murder story in one inn and one witch story where he didn't went into details...As I am actually danish, we passed one of the other guides on the danish tour, who actually went totally into details about witch trials, and I was so disapointed that our guide didn't go into all of that. Plus his english wasn't that well, so I suggest that maybe hire a guide who can actually tell the stories in english and keep the group entertaint, and not with facts about buildings, because it is the people that makes the city...So please more Ghost stories and more blood...So sadly I can only give the guide 2 stars and that is because he was a nice old man...But to me this wasn't worth the money and also it is very late, there is nothing to do in Ribe from when the stores close at 18, until the Ghost Walks starts at 21...So either the Museum itself should be open until then or they should change the time of the walk to maybe 7 pm...

Nice little museum if you can read Danish. Though too expensive for what you get. Only a few things are translated in English of German. The explanation of all the exavations is just in Danish. The musesm excists of two floors, on the upper floor nothing is trandlated in English at all.
You pay about €10/11 each and if you read everything they did translate in English, you are finished in one hour.
Instead we would recommend the Viking Center. More value for your money and much more interesting.

If one is really interested in learning about the Vikings, this is NOT the place. There was a room where a film was shown and another room with a poor display attempting to provide information.

This small museum is a good introduction to the Vikings and does an excellent job of explaining the history of the Vikings and the town in terms that I found very understandable. The exhibits are very good at explaining the Vikings but are a bit focused on glass cases and lacking in modern, more interactive exhibits that might appeal to children. Most of the overarching text panels are in English while the descriptions of objects are in Danish. We found this oddly liberating as it caused us to focus on the key explanations and not get lost in the many objects on display. A careful visit here that reads most of the explanations in English took us about an hour. I recommend this museum for those interested in supplementing the much more extensive and interactive living history museum, the VikingeCenter, just outside town.

Since I've been working in Sylt I decided to make a spontaneous trip to Ribe and visited the Museum in August 2015.

The Museum can be reached easily since it's just in front of the train station and the entrance fee is reasonable.
The artefacts take you back to the Viking Era and Show you the very simple aspects of their daily life.

It was interesting but half of the Information was not translated so I found it hard to understand what the artefacts or the exihibits were for or their description. This Problem doesn't only concern this Museum but also the Dom in the Centre which provides only guides in Danish.

The Museum is a must and the City is lovely and friendly! I really recommand it !

Ribe and the viking museum are truly wonderful places to visit. If you are going to be on the danish west coast, please make an effort to get down to Ribe. The town is worthy of a full day of walking around...its so old and charming...and this museum is modern, comprehensive, and has a beautiful little collection of viking jewelry for sale in reproduction.
