Pura Vida

wonderful visit with local people who live their national motto "Pura Vida" or simple life. We heard this greeting from all age groups and nearly every contact. The west coast is lots of lush tropical jungle so thick the animals are hard to see in the day, but the night time guided flashlight tours are rich with wonderful, exotic treasures explained by dedicated, knowledgeable locals who communicate with each other along the trails so we see all of the animals the various groups find along the way.

Volunteered planting trees - can't wait to come back and see how they've grown

The reason I planned my trip to Costa Rica was so that I could volunteer and help the environment. While planning the trip I got in contact with the co-founder of La Reserva, Daniel, and he helped us set up dates to come visit. He was extremely helpful.

Yesterday he took us on a tour of the forest, which is truly beautiful. We went during the day and saw lots of beautiful animals. Though most of the animals in the forest are nocturnal so I'm sure a night tour would be even better.

Today he took us to a private project where they're planting trees (as they haven't started planting at the reserve yet). My friend and I, along with 2 other volunteers, planted about 200 trees I'm a few hours. It's exhausting work but so worth it.

If you get the chance, definitely check out La Reserva and try to set up a day to volunteer. They were totally fine with us only helping them for one day. I'm so glad that I got the chance to do this. Hopefully I can come back in 20 years and see the forest that I helped plant :)

La Reserva does some great work and its charismatic leader Roberta is passionate and easy to talk to. Very informative tours available here, though don't go expecting to see much wildlife.

An authentic eco experience

We were told about La Reserva on a taxi ride from La Fortuna and immediately booked a tour for an empty morning in our schedule. Our guide was a local - expert in English and "Bird" and everything to do with the forest. I'd thoroughly recommend the tour to anyone passing through the Tileran area that wants a real authentic experience of the reforestation initiatives in Costa Rica.

It's an organization (non-profit) that is dedicated to keep Costa Rica green. They have a great night tour as well. We saw animals which you normally do not see easily.
