When one stays at Pollachi, there are so many view points / sights nearby. Aliyar Dam is a top priority not only for tourists, but also for pilgrims (Arivu Thirukoil nearby) and film shoot crews. For foodies, fresh dam fish is caught, fried and served hot. Spicy and full of bones and so watch out. On a cold evening, nothing like watching sunset and having fresh fish here.

The best part of the dam was the access to the catchment area by tourists to enjoy the calm and serene expanse of the waterbody and to spend time in the leisure park nearby. Used as we are to viewing dams only from the spillway side,. the view from the catchment area givers one a new perspective about dams.

It was one of those last min decisions to take this route, while returning to Kochi from Bangalore.

It was worth a deviation and an amazing trail. Had an awesome time riding through the beautiful hair pin Curves, a dip at the Downstream of Aliyar Dam - the Sewer - you need to take a deviation before climbing aliyar to find this place , view of the Aliyar Dam from the Top was just mind blowing , Upper Sholayar and Lower Sholayar enroute Malakkapara, the border b/w Kerala and Tamil nadu. It was an awesome drive through the scarily narrow path through Malakkapara - Athirappilly route, spotting fresh elephant dung, and friendly Nirgiri Thar- an endangered species.

View of the Athirappilly water falls was splendid.

Statutory Advise : Please do not tease or feed Wild Animals, stay at safe distance, do not stop at forest routes, expect elephants and wild animals at every turn, do not litter, keep out natural resources safe and precious.

The Dam is located on the way to Valparai just on the foot hills. The is a good govt approved fish shop right outside the entrance, the shop sells very tasty fish. There are a couple of good resorts near the dam. To have a good view of the dam drive a couple of kilometers up hill and can have a fantastic view.

It is a big dam. Boating is available here. Entrance fee is Rs 5. It has children play area also. You have to climb around 100 stairs to see the dam or boating. It is very nice, but lovers [luster] are everywhere. They have to think as a public place and not a lodge. The old movie Kadhalikka Neramillai 'viswanathan velai vendum' song was shot here.

More than the dam, the drive from Valparai to this place, 43 kilometres is very scenic and has forty hairpin bends. Took us around two hours with stoppages for photos in between. The view point around four kilometres before the dam gives a fantastic view. There are possibilities of spotting wild life along the route

If you are in Valparai, you cannot miss seeing this reservoir as it runs around Valparai. The dam is very scenic and is surrounded by big mountains almost on all sides. You must not miss seeing this dam when it is full and overflowing. You can also visit the Monkey falls which is close to the Aliyar dam. The best time to visit this dam is during the months of July and August. If you are lucky, you can also spot some animals like the Nilgiri Tahr, Lion-tailed macaques and elephants en route.

The surrounding green forest vistas with a view as far as the eye can see from the reservoir top after climbing 120 steps, gentle lapping water and the mist and the sun rays alternating between, the majestic mountains, make for a special place. Sadly, there is only one boat (seats 18 folks) available for the boating purpose. Wish the management have more boats for excursion. The park below is nothing to sneeze about, could be more cleaner. The entrance is very cheap.

hi all, i visited dis place with my friends.. am from kochi.. if u are going to aliyar from ernakulam, then its better to take the athirappilly- malakkappara- sholayar- valparai- aliyar route.. dis route is awsome... lots to see... keep in mind that there is chance of seeing elephants in this path.. more than 50km through the forest is mindblowing... but the thing is the check post of athirappilly will be closed by 6pm, so keep in mind that too, also if u are coming back to kochi via sholayar-malakkappara route, then the problem is u shud pass the malakkappara check post by 4pm then only u can clear athirappiilly checkpost at r8 tym...
