My friends and I loved learning to cook authentic Guatemalan cuisine from Chef Claudia. She did a wonderful job dividing up the duties so even the youngest children in our class could help prepare the meal, and we all learned a lot about traditional Mayan foods. At the end of the class, we sat down at the CECAP patio, perched among the Santa Cruz rooftops, and the kitchen staff presented our meal with a culinary flair. Enjoying our beautiful food along with beautiful views of the lake was a fantastic way to end our trip to Lake Atitlan.

My dad and I had a wonderful time learning to cook with Claudia and anther couple from Canada. Claudia asked us whether we preferred English and Spanish, and used both so we could both understand and learn. We made Pepián, tamalitos, and rellenitos, all traditional Guatemalan dishes. If there's a dish you really want to learn, you can ask ahead of time to see if they can teach that dish instead. Claudia was a warm and informative teacher and the food was wonderful. The meal was served on the patio with the spectacular view of the volvamos in plain sight. This is a class not to be missed!

The cooking class at Cafe Sabor Cruceno through CECAP was awesome. We learned about traditional Mayan cooking and our instructor Claudia showed us how to prepare an amazing meal! We made Tamalitos de Chipilin for our first course, Suban Ik for the main course, and Camote en Dulce for dessert. Claudia is a wonderful teacher and very skilled. The kitchen was well stock and very clean. After we prepared our meal, we ate it in the restaurant overlooking Lake Atitlan with an amazing view. The food was so delicious! It was a wonderful and memorable experience! We highly recommend it to anyone visiting Lake Atitlan. Thanks to Claudia and the wonderful staff for showing us how to make an amazing meal and making this experience so pleasant and fun! Truly a worthwhile experience! Additionally, the money we paid to take this class and the artisan classes that we took goes to CECAP/Amigos de Santa Cruz, an NGO dedicated to educating and empowering the people of Santa Cruz so that they can learn valuable skills to earn a living wage. Some of our family took the beading class and learned how to make a beautiful beaded bracelet. The rest of our family took the weaving class and learned how to make a lovely scarf. We kept the items that we made and gained a great appreciation for our teachers who were so patient as we needed a lot of help. The women who taught these artisan classes were true masters of their trade and made it look so easy. We have a greater appreciation for the craftsmanship that goes into the beautiful clothing and other handmade goods that are made and sold at local markets by the Guatemalan people and at the Manos Crucenas shop at Amigos de Santa Cruz.
