Saligao Church, on the way from Panaji to Calangute beach, is easily accessible. The Church is open upto 1230hrs so one needs to plan the visit accordingly. The exterior in plain white is simple yet inspiring. The interior is soothing & peaceful. Even a short sitting inside the Church gives the mind & heart a pious good feeling. And I am not even a Christian !

Its name means THE MOTHER OF GOD. A beautiful church located in the fields of Saligao and the pride of all Saligaonkars. It's approximately 3km prior Calangute. It has breath taking altars and its Gothic architecture brings about its grandeur. At night it's very well illuminated and makes a beautiful sight. A must see.

Mae De Deus is a reference to the mother of god. Out of several visits, we found it closed because of arriving late so if you want to go inside the church please be there before 5 pm. It is clearly visible from the main road.

It takes about half an hour to reach this place by road from Panjim via NH66 & Chogm road after passing Porvorim. Especially during monsoon you won’t miss this bright white structure located in Saligao surrounded by plenty of greenery. There is nothing much nearby except the adjacent parking lot & church ground in the front that enhances the beauty of it in countryside like setup. It gets illuminated at night.

The church was constructed over a span of 6 years & commissioned in 1873. For a one & half century old building it is very well maintained to be a heritage structure. The internal carved objects are gilded with gold-paint. There are several spires & each one is decorated with a cross. The main wooden statue of mother goddess was originally located at a convent in old Goa. Two states one standing & another sitting are located in the church courtyard.

Annual feast takes place on the 1st Sunday of May.

Arrived at this beautiful architectural building set in such delightful gardens to be met with a sign saying no entry for tourists! Unbelievable! I don't understand why this is even allowed as churches should be open to everyone regardless of creed or colour! It obviously has a very rich congregation when it doesn't require the donations from visitors to help feed the poor. One would even wonder if they care about feeding the poor? A very ridiculous situation all round.

We visited this church while staying in Saligao and it is a very beautiful, very well maintained place to see. It will be worth asking the local people when the best time to visit is. Looks very pretty when illuminated at night.

The foundation stone of the Church was laid on 1st February 1867 and on 25th October 1873 the Church was christened Mae de Deus (Mother of God). Historical facts state that the statue of Our Lady was brought from a Convent/Church in Daugim, a place in Old Goa, in November 1873. The statue is chiselled in wood and painted in gold. The Gothic architecture brings about the grandeur of the Church. At nights its all illuminated and makes an awesome sight. Splendid - serene - devotional.

Mae De Deus Church is one of the beautiful churches in Goa. One of Goa's finest architectural marvels. It has the typical pointed arch, with buttresses supporting its exteriors, belfry, and spikes all which have come together to create a wonderful piece of Gothic architecture.
Stark, stern and yet with a glamorous charm all its own, the Mae de Deus or Mother of God church is a breath-taking site. With its Gothic spires and pristine white walls, it reminds one of a fairytale castle. Situated amidst picturesque surroundings of the typical Goan countryside, this Church at Saligao, which is situated in the Bardez taluka, was built in 1873.
It is amongst the finest in the Gothic style and is attractively illuminated at night. It is the finest example of Neo-Gothic architecture in Goa. It houses the miraculous statue of Mae de Deus (Mother of God) which was brought from the ruins of the convent of Mae de Deus at Old Goa.

Please don't visit the Church from 2-4PM atleast on Sundays. I was unfortunate enough to pass from the location at that time and some event(mass?) was going on. So, I was denied entry.

If you love to see a rare gem, you need to visit Mae De Deus Church in Saligao. The Achitecture is one of a kind in the world. As the history goes, this church was built by the best builders in the world who never built same architecture again in their other ventures. It's just 5 minutes from Calangute, Baga beach. It's a special sight at night when the lights are on. It's looks like it's made out of crystal glass.
