The Jewels of Portugal bike tour began in late October and finished Nov 8, 12 days in all though a few days non-riding for recovery and sightseeing. Portugal is beautiful, so green, so many fantastic sites and experiences, and cuisine.
We were 9 riders, plus our highly engaged guide. Before the tour, two guides gave the briefing and prepare the bikes for departure. The bikes were great, only minor problems and these were handled quickly and expertly.
Accommodations were very good, some nights excellent and some meals excellent as well. Ask anyone on the tour and you will have different answers on favorites!
Terrain and tour routes were well planned, and our great guide was very effective telling us what was ahead. We had the option to ride in the van and this was helpful on a couple of occasions. GPS trackers helped too, both the office and the guide keeps an eye on us, in case one or many are off course.

My husband and I recently took a trip with Portugal Bike. We have taken numerous trips with Portugal Bike over the years, and each experience has been fantastic. Whether it has been on mtn bikes, road bikes or one of their new e-bikes; the trips are designed for the experience you choose according to your abilities.
Your cycling journey will take you through beautiful Portugal off the beaten path with incredible lodging in the evening, not to mention amazing food. Portugal Bike ensures that their bikes are in top notch condition, along with any of their equipment that you may rent. I always appreciate the small “guide book” they provide with interesting points of interest you see along the way.
I was amazed how smooth the e-bike was, more like a gravel bike but better-light weight and comfortable. The seat was also great. I was a bit hesitant about choosing the e-bike option, but I was happy that I made this choice, because our trip had a lot of elevation gain. Attention to detail is what makes Portugal Bike special.

From our initial handshake with André where he picked us up at our hotel in Lisbon to our final celebratory meal together with Andre and our group of 7 bikers, our experience was fulfilling, adventurous, educational, and healthy! Every meal was nutritious and truly delicious! The accommodations (except for the very first night) were clean, comfortable and historic! The biking was challenging, yet self-paced and inviting. To be immersed in the beautiful countryside and winding roads throughout small cities and villages in both Portugal and Spain along the Camino de Santiago was a gift.
We enjoyed learning the history that Andre imparted to all of us about every place we visited, including the local authentic foods and culture.
Andre was cautious, respectful and prepared us for each day’s situation.
We are truly grateful to have had this fabulous biking experience.
We would definitely recommend this bike tour with Portugal Bike Tours!

Towards the Algarve guided trip – Sept 2024
I was on this trip with Valerie S and share her views. I rarely leave negative reviews but feel our experience should be available to those considering this trip. I am puzzled as to why Portugal Bike has so many positive reviews when our experience was so different. I believe the difference may be due to the individual guides and routes. As Valerie noted, our guide tried hard but was not given the resources to do an adequate job for 9 riders. Also, after the ride in response to our query, the office said our ride was NOT “Guided,” it was only “Scheduled,” meaning we somehow should have expected a much lower level of service. In all my years of doing guided rides, I’ve never heard of this. So our guide may have had a different view of what he was supposed to provide than what we all expected (little sustenance at the picnics, no on-the-bike guide, riders missed the water, picnic spots & cafés on the first couple days due to miscommunications.) He did improve over the 5 day tour in response to our requests. I feel badly that he wasn't given the resources to do a good job for us.
I would add that the road bikes had thick hard rubber tires that made them ride like bricks and were slippery on wet roads and cobbles. And one bike did not have a functioning front brake on the very hilly first day (it was fixed before the next day). The route was very trafficky and had too many semi trucks to be comfortable riding on roads with little shoulders. Traffic has increased dramatically since we did this route with Portugal Bike 5 years ago. (We’ve ridden our bikes across the U.S. so are not put off by traffic but this was too much.) Bring a headlight and always wear neon. Try to get comfortable on your rental bike the night before the first day which has an 18% grade.
On the plus side, the hotels and meals were amazing. But I can't recommend this ride.

We had an amazing trip with Jose as our guide. He was very experienced and passionate about cycling. He was knowledgeable about the area we cycled through and flexible when the weather turned bad and we had to change our original plans. There were supposed to be 8 people on this trip but a group of 6 cancelled at the last minute. We were a bit concerned about how it would be with us (a couple) and the guide, however Jose gave us a great experience and was good company.
We would highly recommend Portugal bike tours and Jose. Everything was very well organized, the bikes and routes were first rate and the accommodations were excellent.

Our bike tour in the Alentejo Region was the highlight of our trip to Portugal. The tour booking was smooth, communication with the tour operator was excellent. The tour highlighted medieval and historic sights and featured visits to a winery and a pottery studio…a great mix of experiences to introduce us to the people and products of Portugal. Our tour guide was passionate about Portugal, very knowledgeable about the region including its food and wines and attentive to our needs. He set up our equipment (carbon fibre bikes with high end gearing) and met us along the way with water, snacks and a picnic lunch…on a marble picnic table no less! The route was lined with trees in blossom, the boughs weighed down with oranges and lemons. April is definitely the perfect time to visit this part of the country and travelling by bike was a delight. It was my first experience of a bike tour and we are already planning to return next year to see a different part of Portugal with Portugal Bike. I would highly recommend them.

We would like to commend the team at PortugalBike for the extraordinary experience they created for us on the Charming Pousadas tour of the Alentejo region.
This tour was designed with great care, and even though the two of us traveled by bike independently for six days we felt the support of the team all along the way. The route was clearly designed with great care and local knowledge to put us on the safest roads and also show us the treasures of the region. The provided bicycles were expertly tuned for perfect shifting, climbing, and braking. And we were provided preprogrammed Garmin GPS devices that freed us to enjoy the scenery without any navigation worries.
We loved the self-guided format because we could immerse ourselves in the communities we visited, picking our own stops and letting conversations with people happen as they will. We felt warmly welcomed everywhere.
On the Charming Pousadas tour we visited 6 amazing hotels, each one as remarkable as the next. Most or all were over 500 years old but all were updated to highest quality. After dinner one night we found the tower stairs of the castle we were staying in. We climbed and climbed and finally reached the top, with the lights of the city of Estremoz below and the stars above.
Thank you Cristina, Luis, Jose and the rest of the team for making this experience possible.

Six adult members of my family went on the Ancient Medieval Villages tour in May 2023, and we loved it; the best thing was that the tour organizers planned flawlessly, and the guides were kind and helpful, so we could relax, enjoy our time and ride our bikes. This tour company has been offering tours for thirty years, and their experience is evident in how our guides handled all details without fanfare or drama; the bikes were perfect, the water bottles were always full, the GPS was programmed correctly, and food and support were timed perfectly. We loved the mix of different types of food and side tours of local attractions, hotels, and terrain. The owner Jose was one of our leaders, and he was exuberant and kind; our other leader was Andre, who was also kind and an excellent problem solver for any minor problems that arose, e.g., educating riders about their bicycles. Less experienced members of our group rode eBikes, and stronger members rode conventional bikes, and it worked out well. We had a lovely time, and it was excellent value for the money spent – highly recommended!

Did the Algarve tour with family and 5 now new friends. The support was excellent from start to finish. This company’s attention to detail is exceptional.
Our guide, Jose, was excellent - herded our gang, communicated well, kept our bikes and GPS running smoothly, explained so much about the language, history, culture, economy, and had the best snacks and “picnics” at our stops. He also accommodated my food sensitivities with grace. Thank you - obrigada! - Jose!
The hotels were excellent and the bed and breakfast stop was charming. The dinner restaurants were carefully chosen and excellent. The riding was fun and challenging and brought us to great views. Wish we had access to more back country roads.
Highly recommend the ebike option!

We had a nice ride and Jose and Cristina were friendly and helpful. It helps to ride a little slower in the towns because the GPS is slower with buildings around and there are some complicated turns. The hotels were always in nice places with great historical value. If there was a complaint, they met us too often for snacks (twice a day) and I would have preferred to stop at a cafe along the way but I think most people would definitely prefer the support they offered and it was great. The first day is long (which makes it hard) but the "hard" day really isn't too bad and the scenery on that day is particularly spectacular although it is not on the coast. They claim it rains one day every trip on the Camino de Santiago ride but we got lucky with the weather.

Hi Julie, I know you mentioned staying longer in Sagres and Lagos. Any other towns you'd spend an extra day in?
I'm looking at Arrifana, Carrapateira, Odeceixe, do you remember any of those stops on your trip?
Written January 6, 2019
Hi, We stopped near Odeceixe, and it was a pretty town, but did not really explore much. Nice area, though, around there.
Written January 8, 2019
Hi we are a group of 10 that is interested in the off road version in Vicentine park. Are there any towns in particular that you would stay in or stay for more than 1 day?
Written January 6, 2019
Hi,
Our tour is designed spending one night in each place, but for a group of 10 we can customise it to meet your wishes. We offer 2 different versions: a long tour (Cork Trees & The Algarve Wild Coast - 9 days, 8 nights, 7 days cycling) and a short tour (The Algarve Wild Coast - 6 days, 5 nights, 4 days cycling). Há a possibilidade de fazer sozinho? Alugando a bicicleta em porto e deixando ela em Santiago de Compostela?
Grato

Hi Colin,
My husband and I are considering the TOWARDS THE ALGARVE this October. Can you provide some details about the weather during your trip. I'm a little concerned about rain. What were the temps like?
Thanks!
Cindy
Written August 1, 2016
If it happens to rain it's only for a short time. The closer to SJ you are the less chance of rain. In the jungle it will rain but the rain is nothing to stop a trip for. The rain just cools things off. Have a great trip.

Portugal é um país seguro. Não há riscos em andar de bicicleta sozinho. Nós também oferecemos passeios autoguiados.
