A fun adventure with little room to move or sit.
Feb 2020
We had planned to arrive early and it took longer to get there than expected. By the time we arrived, the road had cars parked end to end on both sides of the street. We had several seniors in the vehicle who could not take a long walk, so continued driving until we were there. They asked for $5 for parking. I asked if they had a place to park for disabled. They did not take our money and instructed us where to park. I was a bit worried about being parked in. I guess they collect the keys and valet that parking lot. There was a huge variety of foods and drink, all very affordable. Yes, there was produce, local arts &crafts and live music. Overall, it was a very fun, hippy-esque experience. Our first challenge was finding a place to sit. It seems that those who are experienced come early and find their seats for the night. We sat on a rock ledge near the 'smoking area' . It was not particularly near the entertainment, but we could still hear the music. The two of us did take the walk to the 'new' black sand beach. It was a nice hike with a good path to the water. Not sure if there is actually a beach, but the black sand trail was nice and worth the short hike. We felt we had experienced everything there was to offer and decided to find our fellow travelers. We returned to the parking lot and asked if they could retrieve our vehicle, No only did they remember us and our key they were able to tell us where our friends were. Earlier in the evening someone showed them a quiet place to sit. They felt the staff was extremely friendly and helpful.

Wasn't open
Apr 2019 • Friends
We went to Uncle Robert's to enjoy everything it offered as we had heard so much about the place. It was closed and wasn't going to open until 4 pm on a Wednesday so we really didn't have time to stay. Parking is $5.00 and it is a bit of a walk. We we're sorry to miss it. I really can't rate it since we weren't allowed to stay until it opened.

Great place to try kava
Mar 2019 • Couples
This is a great place to hang out. It is a thatched roof palapa with picnic tables and a kava bar. I got to chew on a bit of the kava root and it numbed my mouth. The overall effect is relaxing.

A great place to experience the local culture
Mar 2018 • Couples
If you want to really experience the local culture, go to Kalapana on Wednesday evenings. It offers live music, about 20 different ethnic food vendors (and really good food), a bar, and much better handmade crafts than you'll find at most of the Big Island markets. It is a strange mixture of tourists, natives, and folks of alternative lifestyles who inhabit this area. It is a real treat.

This is a great place to talk to locals about the lava and history of it's path. We got a lot of good tips from people and had a great chilled coffee drinks.

love the kava
Jan 2017 • Friends
Always enjoy the kava and company here. Can't beat relaxing next to the lava while sippin on a shell and seeing familiar faces. A favorite hangout for locals.

Interesting open place where everyone seems to gather especially on Wednesday evening where dozens of vendors gather to sell the local craft as well as dozens of foods of all types! Music is great also.!

The Wednesday evening night market at Uncle's is the best - music, food, shopping, etc. - a locals' favorite on Wednesdays but everyone is welcome!

The best night we had in Hawaii
Aug 2016 • Couples
Around 400 people, great music, dancing, excellent food, meeting locals at the communal tables, it was our most favourite night in Hawaii.
