This place is located at the entrance to the Sedona Airport on top of Airport Mesa. To reach it, you ascend a long straight road that climbs up the side of the mesa. At the top, you pay $3 for parking (I believe it is all-day). They have a large lot.
We visited about 15 minutes before sunset. By that point, there was a line of cars waiting to get in and a huge crowd at the overlook (probably 150 people, at least). It was hard to get photos due to the crowding, but it was still possible. I would actually recommend that you arrive here at least 30 minutes before sunset and stake out a spot towards the front / fence.
If the weather cooperates, you can get good photos from this spot. It has views of many of the red rock formations to the north and northeast. In my limited experience here, the lighting conditions were better on a clear evening - that seemed to produce richer reds as the sun went down. From a slightly different spot in town the following day (when there were a few clouds), the lighting was noticeably less interesting.
We made a point to leave just as the sun was completely setting, so as to avoid the likely mad scramble of everyone deserting the place at that time.
If you want to avoid the crowds and the $3 fee, and if you are willing to settle for a lower vantage point with somewhat more restricted views, may I suggest Posse Grounds Park instead? There is a slight bluff just behind the skate park there that offers fairly good views. No one was around other than some skaters, dog-walkers, and reggae enthusiasts in the ballfield next door. It was a much more relaxed atmosphere for taking photos, though you have less of a panoramic view.

This is nice overlook to see the sunset. There are some nice areas to see sunset but this is easy and convenient. There is a paid parking lot I think about $3 I would bring cash to make it easier. The area can get a little crowded and most people stand. This spot is not the vortex. The vortex is at the beginning part of the road as you head up the hill. There is a small parking lot to walk up to the vortex. You can hike it from the vista parking lot which is about .5 mile hike. The weather was great with no clouds in sky which in some ways made the sunset nice but not amazing. Sometimes clouds can add a nice dimension to the sunset. One thing I would do next time is actually go in the morning for sunrise. When the sun rises and hits Thunder Mountain makes it look great. We were there after sunrise and the colors on the rocks looked great.

As sunset was approaching during our one night in Sedona, we asked for a tip on where to go, and we were sent here. There is a $3 charge for parking which is not unreasonable and did allow us to find a parking spot nearby. There was a large crowd already there 15-20 minutes before sunset. Nonetheless, it was worth coming here since sunset is undoubtedly the most beautiful time of the day here.

Be forewarned: all available free parking spots will be taken long before sunset as visitors and locals alike crowd up on this high site to view the sun's last rays when it slips over the western horizon. If all roadside spots are taken it will cost you only $3 to avail yourself of airport parking. In addition to an unparalleled view of the western skies, this spot affords you a beautiful view of the valley in which much of the Sedona area sits. There are also nice places to enjoy a meal while you're up there.

Easy to find and easy to park. If you can find a space in the parking area on the road up, take it. This parking area is directly below the viewpoint. If that free parking is full, continue to the top for paid parking by the small airport You can reach the trail from either parking area. There are several trails, including a loop. We went from the airport parking lot to the view point, which is about a 30 minute relatively flat hike.

It's a great view of the sunset, but there was just too many people. Not any social distancing, however, people were wearing masks which was good. But since there was so many people it was hard to get a picture without a bunch of heads in the picture. There are probably other places better to look at the sunset.

Everything in this area is great--this scenic overlook being one of the best. I think the best place for sunset viewing on our trip. Reasonable parking across the street ($3 at the time of this writing) in a very large lot. Pull up your chairs (and blankets this time of year). Not crowded when we were there on a Thursday.

This is a good spot. If the lower lot is full, drive on up to the top, where there is plenty of parking for $3. There is a nice overlook at the top. Then you can hike down to the vortex plateau by the lower parking lot and look towards the south. Beautiful. This is where most folks want to view. It will be about a 25 min hike down from the top parking lot. Just remember, you have to hike back up!! It's a good trail. Allow 90 minutes to 2 hours. There are Port a Potties in that upper parking area. Take advantage of those before hiking down :-)

Not worth the $3 for parking. So many people standing around that it is hard to get a good picture of the beautiful lighting against the rocks. There’s also an ugly metal fence in the way.
If you just want to go there and enjoy the sunset with a bunch of people and not worried about catching COVID then this might be worth your time. Be sure to get there at least half hour before sunset to enjoy the lighting.

We loved this area to watch the sun set. We walked down into the dirt area from the paved area and found a large rock to dit on. There was a crowd but everyone was respectful and enjoying their time. There is a parking area across the street for $3 and they sell water if need.

Is this is lookout where I can just pull up and park easily? If I park for $3 is it a long hike to the viewpoint? I ask because I will have my 1 year and 4 year old with me. Thanks

Hello, I did not eat at the MesaGrill at Sedona Airport. I went to the Airport Mesa Vortex located near the Airport Mesa. It is an outlook point. There is a small parking area on the left. The views are spectacular.
