About
Crescent Moon sits beneath the towering Cathedral Rock, one of the most photographed scenes in the Southwest. This day use area group shelter (also known as Ramada) is as popular as it is beautiful. Visitors will marvel at the reflection of the red cliffs in the waters of Oak Creek at Red Rock Crossing.

- lotsagoldens947 contributionsBeautiful place! This is a really pretty park with picnic tables. There are some pretty hiking trails, but nothing is marked. We paid $12 for a day pass (!!), and we asked for a map or a pamphlet. What we were given was a small slip of paper, about 3 x 4, with short descriptions of what's there. Again, not great directions. We did find the vortex by the flat red rocks, and we found Buddha Beach (gorgeous spot with all the leaves turning). We met other people on the trails and everyone was in the same confused fix.Visited November 2023Traveled with familyWritten November 14, 2023
- Navigator605989848305 contributionsAn experience I’ll wonder about for the rest of my life…I was hiking at Crescent Moon Ranch with my husband in March of 2018. (Not given the option above for the correct year) I was 67 then. We stayed close by and walked into the park, paying a small fee. Crescent Moon is a beautiful place with Oak Creek flowing through. I gave this review 5 stars due to the mystical nature of my experience, but I was injured here. After walking across the big flat rock at the base of Cathedral Rock, we walked on the trail a bit further and stopped to watch the creek with mountain bikers on the other side. We were about 6’ front the water with hiking poles planted in front of us. Suddenly I was thrown up and back by an invisible force. My head hit a granite rock, and I did a somersault with my hiking poles in my hands with my feet landing in Oak Creek. It was like being hit by lightning… I was stunned! I was able to walk back slowly to our cabin. At the ER in Sedona, i learned I had a concussion. For anyone who thinks vortexes are not real, think again. I’m a music educator. It took me 2 months to recover. I’ll wonder about this for the rest of my life. I didn’t slip and was standing perfectly still when this occurred. We returned a couple years later so I could confront my fear. I stood in the same place and nothing happened. Sedona is a beautiful place but the energy there can be off the charts, at least on that day, in that moment, like Old Faithful at Yellowstone, only invisible.Visited March 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten December 17, 2023
- Doug L8 contributionsNice alternative to highly commercialized tourism cultureAmazing view, and at $12/car, very reasonably priced. Recommended by a volunteer from the Western Heritage Center in Prescott, after we told him we wanted to go to Sedona. We just went for a short walk to see the iconic Cathedral Rock from a distance, but many other people had brought picnic lunches. Lots of tables, and lots of room on the rocks. Pretty easy walking; not accessible, but also not very challenging. (The family ahead of us had no trouble with 3 small girls, one in a stroller.)Visited February 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten February 24, 2024
- budzy829Henderson, Nevada685 contributionsLess Crowd, More Peace and QuietThis was our 1st time to visit Crescent Moon and it did not disappoint. We came here for picnic lunch beside Oak Creek and what a relaxing afternoon it was indeed. The place is not as crowded and if you hike further in, you'll get an awesome view of Cathedral Rock! The best part of our afternoon was finding a quiet spot beside the creek and enjoying the peaceful moment.Visited May 2024Traveled with familyWritten May 17, 2024
- chelsea w11 contributionsVisiting from oregonAmazing views with great place to relax and swim! Visiting from oregon exploring Sedona I was so taken back by the swimming areas like this one that Sedona has. We spent four hours here swimming and hanging out, some shallow areas as well as a deeper spot to jump in at. Lots of space shaded as well! There's a vortex nearby as well you can hike to!Visited June 2024Traveled with familyWritten June 3, 2024

Horrible experience,
Tim the guy in the entrance was racist with me and my family.
I don’t understand how this very touristic place in Sedona have this type of people working there.
He only let white people in, never had such an unpleasant experience. On top of my mom's birthday.
The guy wouldn't let in visitors of color or Latinos, he made us go around without giving us a pass to the parking lot.
It was an horrible experience, we decided to leave the place because the man just said you should keep going around, sorry. When we argued that we were there before many of the vehicles that he let pass in front of us.

This was our least favourite stop in our week-long vacation, so I cannot recommend it. There are no maps, no marked trails, and we were given a tiny piece of paper with some weird information that is hard to put into context while there. None of us got cell service down there- so we couldn’t look up possible trail maps, or the roads back to Sedona afterward. Many of the established trails actually lead to a dead end, or to a barbed fence, so we kept having to backtrack. Picture a forest full of confused tourists bumping into one another and asking if the trail they were on is a dead end or not. We never got to see a good view of Cathedral Rock (which was why we went), because the creek was running fast and cold, and we weren’t willing you take off our shoes and pants to try to get over the water- I didn’t see anyone attempt that while we were there. I see how that would be easier in the summer though. And getting over the water is the only way apparently to get a good view.
It is $12 per vehicle to get into the gate, and they do NOT accept the Red Rock day pass (only the annual pass). We felt ripped off.

We parked and walked down the path at the far end of the parking lot to Buddha Beach. The first swimming area we found was too crowded for our distancing taste, but we found a great place further down off the smooth red rocks. What a view, and crystal clear water.

This site has beautiful views, a peaceful atmosphere, is serene and quiet and was not at all crowded in early November. You can walk as much as you wish on lightly wooded trails, across rocks, and along the riverbank. Swimming is available in warmer weather. We are not experienced hikers and had no trouble whatsoever with a three mile hike across various types of terrain. We visited the area as part of the One Tribe vortex tour (just the two of us with our amazing guide) and it was a perfect place to experience the healing power of nature.

This is one of the prettiest places you’ll visit in Sedona, along with West Fork Trail. There’s a beautiful stream, and green foliage along the stream to complement the red rocks in the background. We’d hoped to cross the stream at Red Rock Crossing and continue on to Cathedral Rock, but the water was too high in early April. We saw other groups consider and give up crossing as well; it’s probably easier to cross in the summer. Keep in mind that if you want good pictures of Cathedral Rock you’re better off coming here in the afternoon rather than in the morning. Also, it’s $11 per car to enter, and they do have restrooms.

The 3 mile round trip walk was well worth the trouble as there was no parking inside the park. We walked past the main pool up river and found a nice spot in the shade right next to the rivers edge. Be careful as the algae on the rocks is slippery, I saw many people take serious falls, glad nobody was hurt. A definite must go while in Sedona, just get there early during the summer weekends.

Crescent Moon Picnic Site was very busy when we visited but we were able to create our own adventure. A short hike from the site revealed a rocky stream where throngs of people were dipping their feet in the water. There are some decent rock views too.

I am seeing on all trails that there is a trail that crosses oak creek and connects to red rock crossing trail. If I were to park at crescent moon picnic, would I be able to cross oak creek to connect to red rock crossing then Baldwin trail and then climb up cathedral rock or do I need to park on the other side of the creek at Baldwin trailhead and then hike to cathedral rock? Google maps and all trails doesn’t show that there is a bridge or a way to cross the creek but on all trails it does show a trail marking...
Written March 21, 2021
Hello, it is possible to cross the creek in certain areas from the access point at Crescent Moon. Once you have crossed, you can follow the Cathedral Rock trail. Thank you!

Can you fish here? Just regular fishing, NOT fly fishing.
Written September 19, 2020
Fishing is not common at Crescent Moon, but is an option. Please contact Game and Fish to inquire about the fishing requirements (eg. fly fishing, catch & release, etc.). Thank you!

Is there a map of Crescent Moon Park that is given out at the entry station? Reading the reviews, it sounds like you might have a hard time finding Buddha Beach and the best spot to take the iconic Cathedral Rock picture. Thanks for the info.
Written September 28, 2019
We do have souvenir maps that we sell for $1.00, but we also have photo copied inserts that we can give for free that have directions on them. Buddha Beach is pretty easy to find, but the hosts are happy to assist with directions. The most iconic vantage point for Cathedral Rock is from Red Rock Crossing (opposite end of the park). We just finished installing almost 40 interpretive panels throughout the different locations, so Crescent Moon has updated information including map panels.

Hi, my fiancé and I have booked Crescent Moon Ranch Picnic Site Ramada 1 for our wedding. We were under the impression this would allow us to use the space under Cathedral Rock, next to the stream, as someone mentioned in their post. Ideally we’d like to place chairs and tables for 40 people under Cathedral Rock, at least for the ceremony. Do you know if this is possible? Many thanks, Tiffany and Will
Written September 19, 2018
I am not sure because it is a larger place as you walk into the park. There did happen to be a wedding party there taking pictures. There seems to be some open areas that I believe could handle your chairs and tables. Beautiful place. Good luck and congratulations!

Wondering how difficult it would be to get someone who's in a wheelchair in and around park?
Written June 26, 2018
The main paths are concrete sidewalks so it is not a problem. Past the fence line towards unobstructed views of Cathedral Rock the path is packed dirt, but again not a big problem as long as you don't try to cross the creek. I have pushed my mom up to Clingmans Dome TN which was only a few hundred yards but went straight up the mountain. This was (pardon the pun) a picnic compared to that as it is flat terrain and there are van accessible handicapped parking spaces. The bigger problem than accessibility on our visit was two young women who chose to ignore the signs banning public nudity and stripped their clothes off at the suppposed vortex. I don't know if they just really liked each other, they were European, worshipping some earth goddess, or what, but that is a sight you may not want to see yourself, or definitely not a grandchild pushing the chair. If you want an over view of the entire red rock region, you can drive up to the airport and park in the gravel lot for $5 and take the crosswalk over to the airport overlook which is a large fenced flat area.

Hi, Alice. What would you like to know about this attraction?
What pass should I purchase for 3 separate entries into Crescent Moon Picnic area to take photographs?
Written October 23, 2017
The daily parking pass is $10 per vehicle up to 5 people for entry for 1 day. They do not list a short term pass as a possibility at this location, only year round pass. The fee however to walk-in is only $2 per day.
Written October 24, 2017
How late in the afternoon should I take my family to get a parking space to take pictures of sunlit Cathedral Rock with Oak Creek in the foreground? I would like to avoid the midday crowds for getting a parking space I see reading reviews. I would go there during the week to avoid crowds. We leave for vacation to Sedona in 1 week.
Thank you.

Check sunset and the time the park closes. You have to be inside before the park closes. You also have a little walk to the photo sight depending on where you park that could take you maybe 15 or 20 minutes to get there and get set up. So you need to be at a min 30 minutes before sunset. There isn't a lot of space at the spot to stand, so if others are there before you, you're not going to be able to get down there.
Good Luck

weird question. we have a group of star wars costumers and friends who would love to shoot with the scenery there. would it be ok to do that? They are not at all professional shoots. no money is being made by any party and it is purely for fun.

As the operator, I think it's awesome. However, we also have to consider the US Forest Service and their rules. While commercial photography requires a permit from the US Forest Service, my understanding is that non-commercial photography is totally OK on public lands, just have a care around any weddings going on there.
