A great way to end a week of hiking Sedona! Get out there early to get a parking spot and be able to view in the morning light.

A wonderful hike. Thru 13 creek beds. Probably one of our favorite hikes of our trip. Make sure you go all the way to the end. You will reach a sign; it said maintained trail ends at narrow canyon pool ahead. Keep going to where the canyon narrows. We went early and did not see anyone on our way to the canyon. We did see more people as we hiked back. Some people said it was their favorite hike and they always do the hike when they come to Sedona. You hike along a creek with trees, not usually direct sunlight. Hiking poles will come in handy to cross the creek. You don't want to miss this hike. We saw people of various ages and hiking skills. Do as little or as much as you want to hike.

This is top on my list as a favorite. It has a creek and while hiking you are constantly walking through water. Wear water shoes. So many sights that you will be on overload and speechless.

It's a long walk and hard to find parking is, but once you're there the hiking is spectacular. If you visit here you got to get to the end!

We found this hike a nice change for all the other ones we had been doing. Rather than exposed in the sun throughout the hike you got to go along the river, trees, and rock formations... it has some very nice photo opportunities along the hike. Was longer than we expected, but all good and enjoyable.

Did this hike with my husband a kids ages 3, 8 and 10. Although the hike started out in a very hot, dry plain area it soon moves into beautiful forest and creek. My boys all loved the water crossings, which are shallow but still can be challenging if the goal is to keep your feet dry. We passed a good amount of other hikers but not so many that we felt it was too crowded. Got some beautiful canyon shots along the creek. There’s a deeper area where people were swimming and having a blast. We hiked just over a mile in before turning around (because 3 year-old) so can’t speak for the trail after that. Good hike for a hot day once you reach the shady part!

One of the nicest and easiest trails except for the multiple streams to cross. Wear water shoes and bring a hiking stick to enjoy the day. One of the most popular hikes so arrive early. Not a loop but you can easily hike in and see beautiful views and then turn around if you didn't want to do the full 7 miles.

This is an easy out and back trail with gorgeous views "looking up". We can't wait to bring grandkids for the fun climbing and exploring on this trail. Note: must be comfortable crossing the river on uneven stepping stones and going up and down short, rocky inclines.

This is probably one of the prettiest hikes in Sedona, if not the prettiest. We walked through an old orchard that was in bloom, crossed a bridge, and then meandered through a canyon along a creek. The green foliage combined with the creek and the high red walls of the canyons around us made for a stunning view. The trail continues for 3 miles, with 13 creek crossings in all, but you can do as much or as little as you like. At each creek, there are conveniently placed rocks and logs to help you get across, but a walking stick and good balance really helps. I was wishing that I had worn my water shoes. If you’re curious about how hard the creek crossings are, I’ve uploaded a couple of pictures with my review.
I had heard that parking was limited here, but we had no problem getting a parking space here at around 12:30 pm on a Monday. There were also cars parked along the highway (walk-ins, perhaps?) Bring $11 for the entrance fee in cash. There are vault toilets (well-ventilated), and picnic tables.

Great hike of about 7 miles; moderate. Also good for kids and teenagers, as you have to cross many times a creek; always fun hopping from one stone to the other. only about 600 feet elevation gain. Also good for a hot day, as you mostly walk under trees, and a cool wind comes from the canyon. NOTE: Have $11 cash with you for the parking fee.

How long does it take to hike west fork?

I can't remember how long we were out there but there were sections that were covered in ice that slowed us down a lot. Under normal conditions at a leisurely pace and stopping regularly to take in the endless sites/beauty I would say a minimum of 3 hours.
What time does the parking lot open ? Their website says 8AM. But I read in couple of reviews saying it opens at 7. I am planning to be there my 6:30. In case the lot is not open is there any parking available near by ? Thanks

We arrived around 745 and the lot was about half full. I believe it opens at 7 but people start lining up prior. I do not know of any other parking nearby.
Hi,
Several people mentioned arrive early due to this trail being very popular, the trail says opens at 8am. What's considered early? Is it worth arriving at 6am or would that be a bust? Thanks in advance

Arriving at 6 AM is highly recommend this time of year. There are several parking spaces outside the gates, which means you don’t have to wait for the attendant. His name is Bill if you meet him - very nice guy.

Is it worth the $10 parking just to walk the first mile of this trail?

Yes it's worth $10. You have toilets and picnic table and trash cans. Plus a great Trail. What else can a car full of people get for $10 ? Maybe a bottle of wate at Disney World.

We plan on stopping here on our way from Phoenix to Williams on the first Saturday of November.
Would 2 miles in (4 miles total) be enough time to complete in 2.5 hours for people in their late twenties?
Also, I see that parking is a hot-topic. We'd be arriving in the early afternoon (1 PM on a Saturday). Should we not even bother?
Any other advice is welcome (weather expectations, clothing, etc.).
(If it matters, we will come back to Sedona on Monday/Tuesday for an "official" visit, but we figured this would be a good spot to actually do something other than driving for the day.)
Thanks!

Good morning Jamie! 4 total miles should be do-able in 2.5hrs. As Connie mentioned earlier, I'd time yourself to 1hr 15min in and then turn around to make sure. Time constraints might be time spent getting into the parking area, weather in early November, how many people on the trail and how much time you spend taking pictures, etc. I would think November would encounter less of a crowd since people from PHX are driving up to get away from the heat. There's plenty of shade and you'll enjoy your hike.

Hi,
I've noticed that some people said that you can park on the side of the road if the parking lot is full but others said you can't. We are going on Saturday and wondered if road parking is ok.
Thanx, Nancy from foxboro

People do park on the side of the road. Personally I think they are crazy. Very narrow, curvy road. Arrive early. We have never had a problem.

How is parking in the afternoon? We typically start our hikes early morning but we will be arriving Sedona at noon. Also are hiking sticks needed on this trail? We'll be visiting mid-April. Thank you!

Using hiking sticks or not is a personal preference, and in this case would also be dependent on the conditions. I am generally a one stick person but found two useful with the icy conditions in January. We saw many people without sticks - some struggling, some not - but I would recommend taking at least one, particularly if you are accustomed to using it.
Cannot comment on afternoon parking other than when we were leaving the trail in the early afternoon, the parking lot was full. It is my understanding that the earlier you go, the better.

We will be hiking this trail among many others while in Sedona in May. We are VERY confused about parking here. We understand that there is a paid parking area for $10.00 that fills up early in the morning. While we intend to be there early in the morning, we are curious about what to do if the lot is already full. Some say park on the road for free. Some say you will be ticketed if you park on the road. Some say you can park on the road if you have a Red Rock pass (no idea what that is or where to buy one - is it good for anything else, or just this one strip of highway???) Some say you can legally park along the side of the road only IF you have an "America the Beautiful National Parks Annual Pass" displayed in your window (we will have one of those for sure, but since this is not a National Park, that doesn't sound true). Does anyone know FOR SURE what we should do if the parking lot is full and we don't want to get a ticket while in a rental car. Can we LEGALLY park on the side of the road here? Thanks for any advice anyone can offer!!!

If you coming from Phoenix you will "feel" the traffic on your way to this point when hitting 89A as there is a main attraction on the way before the W Fork (Sliding Rock Park). It will give you a pulse of what is going on ahead. Might not be a bad idea to postpone for later your visit to the W. Fork if you are not doing the whole thing, why? Well, be aware that the three first miles of the total 8 miles trail (even less) has the most iconic places to see and great spots to rest under the vertical rocky wall with water running at your feet (it's on the first encounter with the river with the trail going left (but you need to take a right following the current. It's like 200 meters beautiful walk under a ceiling of rocks. You will be surprise how many people miss this cue. After that you can go back and follow the trail back). With that in mind and due the short version of the walk, you don't need to be there early and better late when the people have mostly left (later than noon of course). Now, By coming from Phoenix (South going North) on 89A, you can pass the parking lot of the trail and find (200-300 meters ahead) a side spaces used for parking (on your side of the road). It's unofficial but not illegal to park there (check for the signs that prohibit to do so close to the parking lot. Its a narrow side of the road space for maybe 15-20 cars the most (used as a last resource as it is hard to turn back to the official parking lot). Be aware that the lines of cars waiting to park are in line oriented North to South in case you want to wait in line.
Now, If you are coming from Flagstaff, the entrance to the official parking lot will be on your side and also the line of car waiting to enter. But obviously, by coming this way you will have the chance to see the open spaces for parking on the other side of the road 200-300 meters before the parking lot, so you can turn around on the entrance to the parking lot (there is room for it) and go for those beside parking spots. I had the Red Rock Pass which doesn't works for official parking lots (you need to pay anyway for those parking's). There is no signs saying which Pass you need to park on the side of the road where is not signs prohibiting to do it and I saw no tickets on any of the cars that park there, including me. As long you are not in the actual road in this unofficial parking area you should be ok.
