The overall trail is consistent with the dry and rocky riding in Sedona with cliffs on one side and cacti on the other. The climb is reasonable but sporty with ledges and technical jaunts and corners.
If you're riding the whole loop including the decent/downhill be mindful of your exposure, the remoteness and the ability of who you are riding with.
Most of the decent is on this super fun singletrack to slick rock overlook. The views are awesome and there's different lines and variations to explore.
But then you get to a super beat up chute type section where the line choices and consequences aren't super clear. I consider myself an above average rider comfortable with every discipline but I walked this section. As a tourist on a rental bike without knowledge of the area or emergency response, it just wasn't worth it.This section does not flow with the rest of the trail type and in talking with other riders it caught many people off guard. That being said, the second time is a charm once you know what to expect and where to point your tire.
Just be cautious and don't let adrenaline get the best of your decision making and risk assessment. Anything can happen at the best of times in this sport.

very enjoyable, but challenging for casual hikers. The hike to the top of the Cathedral rock was very challenging. , but worth the effort. Several spots required use of hands and arms to traverse steep sections. It was 98 degrees when we finished the 4 hour hike. Start early if it is going to be hot.

The first half of this trail is of easy to moderate difficulty and has continuous breathtaking views of Bell Rock, Courthouse Butte, Lee Mountain, Cathedral Rock and Rabbit Ears. The views of Cathedral are distinct as you are viewing it from the southeast side. The trail is narrow and rocky at times and is often used by mountain bikers, so use caution as you hike. The signs are somewhat confusing at first but if you follow the Yavapai Vista trail it eventually gets you to the HiLine Trail. We hiked about 1.7 miles one way from the parking lot which led us to a plateau-like area of flat rock where you can sit and enjoy the views and a snack. We returned the way we came (3.4 miles round trip) but you can continue on the HiLine and connect to the Baldwin Trail which is more difficult with some steeper sections.

Before I say anything I have to admit we took this trail by accident. I agree with the other reviews that the views are spectacular from the top. Getting there can be quite frightening for those of us that don’t like sharp drop offs.
When we got started heading down the other side we met some bikers and told them they were in for some sharp slopes and to us some white knuckle turns. They informed us we were in for the steepest deciles down rocks imaginable. They were right. We made it ok and I was glad we did it. However we then another couple of miles back to the car with little water.
I know we are to blame for not checking out the difficulty and length before starting and learned a very valuable lesson

My wife and I have found the Hike House to be an invaluable resource while hiking in the Sedona area. They recommended the Hi Line trail to us this visit and we hiked it a couple of days ago. We started in the Yavapai Vista parking lot (across the street from Bell Rock). Just start on the trail and soon you will hit Slim Shady trail. Go to the left and in a short distance you come to the Hi Line trail. Go the right and enjoy the amazing scenery. For the first part of the trail you are walking on a 3 foot wide trail on the side of the mountain. Eventually you come around a corner and get the first of many spectacular views of Cathedral Rock. The trail loops around the backside of Cathedral Rock. You walk through varying and spectacular terrain as you loop all the way around Cathedral Rock and come to the more trafficked part of Cathedral Rock via the Baldwin and Templeton trails. You get a nice little section along Oak Creek. Once you leave Cathedral Rock on the Templeton trail which then connects with the Slim Shady trail again, it's a bit of a drudge back to the parking lot. But a small price to pay for the amazingness of the first part of the hike. The trail is easy/moderate for the most part. There is, however, about a quarter mile stretch on the backside of Cathedral Rock that I would rate as difficult. The hike ended up being about 7.5 miles. I think this might be my favorite hike that I've done in Sedona.

This trail was amazing. It isn’t easy but it’s manageable if you are in decent shape and can walk for 3-4 miles. We took the 8mile version of the hike. Highly recommend.

My wife and I are only slightly above average shape - for 60 year olds! This trail was moderately difficult and really worth it. Gorgeous views. We started from Yavapai and climbed the mod we are grade for about 1 1\2 hours, about 2 1\2 miles. One hour back down to parking lot from where we stopped. Sounds like the full loop can be more difficult.

Although not marked as such on the western end, Hiline should be considered directional, as the drop into Baldwin is dh only for MTB. The majority of the trail is maybe single black due more to exposure than technicality, until near the end. There, successive downhill chutes are rideable for some but definitely sketchy and could be consequential when crashing. Views are great, and initial descent from the viewpoint is one of the best around.

My wife and I used the Hiline trail as a long loop trail. We parked at the Yavapai Point trailhead, hiked Slim Shady to Templeton to Cathedral Rock, and then around Cathedral to Baldwin, and then on to Hiline. This has become one of our favorite hikes. The scenes are fantastic and the hiking will give you a good workout. This long loop is not necessarily for all hiking skill levels (there are a few moderately strenuous spots on Hiline and the trail is very narrow in some spots with steep dropoffs), but most hikers will find it very enjoyable. We love it!

Amazing views! 360 panoramic at several different spots. It's a little hard to find the start of the trail, particularly given it's a relatively new one so it doesn't feature on all the older trail maps. Park at the Yavapai Vista TH and connect to Hiline through a couple short connectors. It's a beautiful trail, moderate in terms of difficulty. We ended up crossing over to Cathedral Rock, then climbing/scrambling through the Saddleback to join the Cathedral Trail. We then joined Templeton and finally Slim Shady to get back to Yavapai TH. Slim Shady was probably the most difficult part of the trail, quite rocky and with quite a high ascent. Overall an awesome hike - 4.5 hours including lunch and a couple short stops.
