We booked a tour with Green Zebra Adventures based on reviews read here.
The guides were professional and briefed us on safety and how to operate the desert Tomcars before we started.
The guide led us through the Sonoran Desert on an Indian reservation. The scenery is like nothing we had expected in a desert, very green and beautiful.
There are several stops along the way and our guide John was very informative on plants and history.
The driving of your own car is the best and we had a blast on the various trails although it's really dusty. The speed was not really fast but it was really fun and out car rode very smooth considering the rough trails.
We were told that we would drive at speeds appropriate to the conditions and that we would have a great time.
Indeed we did!!

a very enjoyable day and something I would recommend to anyone visiting the area. I took my six year old son on the trip and we had a ton of fun four wheeling around the desert and learning about the flora and fauna and wildlife from our guide. The vehicles go fast enough for novices to experience some four wheeling off road thrills without getting into trouble. For someone expecting an off road rally car type excursion filled with high speed fish tails and spine crushing jumps and bumps - this is not for you. It is an enjoyable half day ride through the desert which blends education with some PG-13 family friendly four wheeling excitement.

We booked this tour unsure of what it was all about. We have 3 boys ranging in age from 6 to 12 and thought it might be a fun thing to do as a family. I am so glad that we did. We all had a great time and would do it again.
Since we are a family of 5, we were told that we would need 2 tom cars(these are the ATV type cars that are used). One was a 2 seater and the other was a 4 seater. I was a little nervous at first because I thought they would be hard to drive. Luckily they were very easy. No shifting and the only thing I had to do was push the gas and steer. It was very dusty and you will get very dirty. They give you a bandana, but make sure you bring sun glasses and a hat.
We stopped as a group 3 times. The first time the guide talked about the different cacti and the history of the Sonoran desert. The second stop was at river where we saw an eagle flying around. The 3rd stop was on top of a hill over looking a scenic area. I was a little disappointed that we didn't see more wild life. In addition to the eagle, we saw wild horses, vultures and a lizard.
All though I didn't talk much to the guide, my husband did on the way down in the van. He said he was very nice and knowledgable.
Overall I would recommend this tour. It was easy because they picked us up at our hotel and brought us back afterward. The ride out to the desert was not too long. The tour was just the right length. I had seen previous reviews complaining about it being too short for the money. I think if it would have been longer, it would have gotten old and monotonous. I have no complaints and will definitely do it again.

Loved Arizona; what a wonderful place and what wonderful people...only exception to that from our entire trip is GREEN ZEBRA. With so many options for this type of trip DON'T USE THIS COMPANY! We booked and paid for a dessert tour with them for 4 in a 4 seater vehicle the day we arrived in Scottsdale (monday). Monday evening they called to say our tour the next day (which we had paid in full for and had their confirmation for) was cancelled because there wasn't actually space for us on the tour ("their computers weren't updated" was their excuse). We switched some things around so that we could accommodate their schedule and availability for us and do a tour that Friday morning (which was our last day in Arizona). i confirmed our Friday trip Thursday afternoon in their office in the Hyatt; but somehow between Thursday afternoon when we boarded the bus that Friday morning they decided to switch us to the Friday afternoon tour (WITHOUT TELING US)...the Friday afternoon tour didn't work for us because we had a flight leaving Scottsdale that evening. So after waking early and boarding their bus they told us "we have you down for the afternoon" and there are "no 4 person vehicles available" this morning; even though we definitely booked for Friday am and the confirmation they gave us said friday am for 4 seater vehicle (and as I said before we also confirmed on Thursday afternoon)!! don't know what's up with this company but its no way to do business; basically cancelled on us twice in one week! They did offer for us to go 2 people in 2 vehicles, but since we were traveling as family and our kids wanted to be together this option didn't make sense. Dave, the "person in charge" couldn't have been nastier. Told us it was our mistake (even though our confirm said friday morning; and we never would have booked for Friday afternoon because we knew we had a flight) and that WE were holding up the group. Not quite sure how it was "our mistake". I think they must use this tactic frequently to fill up the afternoon tours or to push people who want to travel in one vehicle into two. I asked Dave to ask the other people doing the tour if any of them could possibly switch to the afternoon (or another day), but he wasn't even willing to do that. So many different options for this kind of a trip...so sorry I choose this one...never got to see the desert with my kids....so pick another company so that you actually get to see the desert and one run by someone nicer, so that you get a sense of the real Arizona and the real people of Arizona.

We were hear as a corporate group as part of an "activity" afternoon at the end of our business conference in nearby Scottsdale.
The whole activity was very well organised, The tom cars are very easy to drive and the trail took in some of the amazing scenery of the Sonoran desert.
Our guides were very knowledgeable about the local fauna and flora and I honestly got the sense that we learned as much about the desert and the local cacti as other members of our group who had opted to go for a guided nature hike.
We all had an amazing time and I would heartily recommend giving it a go yourselves - just be warned, you will get very dusty!

John was our guide for a two hour tour where my two oldest kids were able to drive. John was extremely knowledgeable and kept the tour moving while keeping all five of us engaged throughout. We all had a blast and I highly recommend doing this.

My husband and I came out to Arizona for the first time and wanted to experience the desert. We looked all over for a place where we can drive our own Jeep and came across Green Zebra. Our trip was a blast! John and Drew were our guides they were very knowledgeable, friendly and extremely helpful... Especially at taking pictures. The Tomcars we're very easy to drive and a lot of fun. We felt like we actually got to experience the desert on this trip even though it was hot outside. They provided plenty of water and time to get out of the car and take pictures. The only thing we would change is how long of a time we spend in the van picking up and dropping off other people at hotels... maybe spent more time doing that than on the Tomcars. Overall, great trip!

Dear Ehyoussefi,
We are so happy you got to experience the desert, despite the heat! It sounds like you got a lot of great photos too. Additionally, we love our guides so thank you for letting us know how knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful they were! We apologize for the time on the shuttle as that varies depending on the day and the location of the hotel pick-up points. Overall, thank you so much for giving us an excellent rating!
Sincerely,
Michelle Spokojny

Chris our guide was very knowledgeable about the trail we traveled as well as the Indian reservation that we had the pleasure to travel in. We saw wild horses, a snake and many wild birds.

Does every ATV have a guide in it? My wife and I are a little unsure of the driving skills necessary. We are first time ATVers.

No, the guide drives his own ATV and leads the way. My older teens drove so in terms of driving skills, you should be fine.
How old do you have to be to drive a tomcar?

How many people can ride in a tomcar? We have 3 children.
GoGreenZebra

Hi oklahomasooner00,
Thank you for your question!
We have two- and four-seaters, With a family of 5, like yours, we recommend seating one parent with two children in a four-seater and the other with one child in a two-seater. We do not group parties who do not know one another together so no one will be seated in the fourth seat of the four-seater. There are also three stops during the tour so you and your wife can have a chance to drive with each one of the children.
Hope this helps!
Sincerely,
Michelle Spokojny
