Very Nice But Lots of Construction in October

I had never visited the Yavapai County Courthouse in Prescott, though I had been to that town some years before. In October, we were in town for my wife’s business meetings, so I had several days to explore, and after breakfast downtown, I headed immediately to the Yavapai County Courthouse.

Initially, Prescott was the Territorial Capital of Arizona, in 1864, but that was moved to Phoenix. Still, Prescott is the County Seat of Yavapai County, and this lovely building, and surrounding plaza are basically the center of Prescott.

Unfortunately, on this October visit, there was a lot of construction around the Courthouse, from remodeling the fountain in the plaza, to work on the bandstand, to areas closed off, for the installation of Holiday lights - not the ideal time to visit.

Still, the building is lovely. It replaced the original Yavapai Courthouse in 1916, and exemplifies a Federalist Architecture. It would fit right in, were it in Washington, DC.

The grounds, and the plaza are lovely, and tree-shrouded, and even with the construction barricades and tape, there was much to see, and to appreciate.

I spent a good two hours, just at the Courthouse and adjacent plaza, and would have devoted even more, were it not for the construction. A must-see, as is the entirety of the Downtown Historic Area.

The court house square provides a great small town feeling -with occasional concerts, etc. The only issue is that downtown Prescott has become a major tourist destination with all of the businesses., prices, etc. that goes along with that. Still a must-see if you are in the neighborhood.

Looks like a movie set (and in fact has appeared in a number of films). Beautiful trees, locals walking their dogs or just taking in the air. Directly across the street from famous Whiskey Row and surrounded by restored buildings now housing shops and restaurants. A functioning courthouse. Famous statue of Rough Rider/lawman Bucky O'Neil out front, considered by some the finest equestrian statue ever made. By Solon Borglum, brother of Gutzon Borglum (Mt. Rushmore). Great place to sit, people watch, and nosh on something from one of the many nearby restaurants.

when in prescott this is a must. The courthouse is beautifully built. There is a time line infront of the steps near the statue that lays out the history from 1400s to the present. really neat. Great for some time walking the dog, or just sitting and reading a book. Its in the middle of the historical shops and bars and well worth the stop.

Any time of the year one will find folks walking around the square. Nice place to walk and watch the action around you. There are always a few dogs. Other than during the winter there are multiple events ON the square, and sometimes they attract large crowds. It was a good spot for a nice, relaxing walk today.

You might think that you are at a dog park because there are always many people walking their dogs here. It is a pleasant park that is attractive and well maintained. Public restrooms are on the west side near the Courthouse steps.

Reading about the courthouse prior to our visit I thought, "Big deal - a courthouse." But these folks are justifiably proud of their impressive granite courthouse and the lovely yard that surrounds it. I can't begin to imagine what it looks like when they light it up for Christmas!!

We had a arts & crafts booth on the square until COVID forced us out of business. Their events were well organized ... if not a bit irritating because of the court house judges.Grass was well kept and rules enforced so vendors didn't harm the grounds.
Interesting groups of vast difference were present on spring, summer and fall weekends.

Stayed in Prescott, AZ for the first time this vacation. It exceeded our expectations. The people there are truly friendly. The Courthouse Square was beautiful and we took some time to explore it and hang out a little while. Even enjoyed some music entertainment there! Public bathrooms are easily accessible and clean. Perfect location right across from Whiskey Row and all the little shops and restaurants. The three of us (ladies in our early 60's) simply fell in love with Prescott. Thank you, Prescott Community, for helping make our vacation so wonderful.

Beautiful courthouse square that is essentially a park. Excellently maintained. Multiple benches for sitting or you can put out a blanket on the grass. Very shaded from all the trees. Great place to relax and hang out.
