My boyfriend and I booked the one day Grand Canyon via Sedona tour from Phoenix with Southwest Tours. This tour was FANTASTIC and I highly recommend choosing this company to spend the day with. We will definitely use them exclusively each time we vacation out West! They offer a wide range of tours from one day to multi-day at very reasonable prices.
RESERVATIONS/COMMUNICATION
I made the reservations online and quickly received a confirmation email letting me know that we’d receive a phone call the day before the trip with the exact pick up time. A few weeks after making the reservation we ended up switching hotels. I sent two emails to Southwest Tours to let them know about the change and never heard back from them either time. So I finally called and it didn’t sound like they’d updated my hotel change in the reservation. The evening before the tour I still hadn’t heard from them by 6 p.m. so I ended up calling. I would have liked communication prior to the trip to be a little more responsive, however the amazing day that we had completely made up for any concerns I had from the first impression.
THE TRANSPORTATION
The transportation is a big white van, similar to one that you’d be in if you were taking the airport shuttle to a parking lot. The van seats 10 comfortably (including the driver/tour guide). Seats were comfy, the van had big huge windows so you had great views no matter where you sat despite what people have said in other reviews. Our guide and all the people on our tour did a great job about constantly offering to change seats at each stop we made. Often people decided to just stay in their same seat because truly there were no bad views, but sometimes we’d move around a bit. The guide spoke into a microphone so that everyone could easily here the information he was sharing, whether in the back or not. The seats were comfy – many people took little naps throughout the day and no one seemed to be super uncomfortable. My only feedback about the van is that I wish they had cup holders. The only two cup holders were right up front which at times made it hard to drink coffee and take pictures!
THE GUIDE
Our guide was Howard and he was superb! From the moment he picked us up to the minute he dropped us off he was a true professional. He made sure that people got to know him enough so they felt comfortable, he emphasized safety as the #1 priority and constantly checked in to make sure people were comfortable and having fun. He would ask if he was talking too much or not enough as well. He never rushed us at any of the stops – always waited for us to say when we were ready to go. He was always offering to take peoples pictures and would take multiple shots and even confirm if you liked them.
Howard was very knowledgeable about a wide variety of topics. Throughout the day he taught us about the history of Phoenix and Arizona, the history of the people and the tribes. He knew a lot about the various plants and unique environmental features of the state. We talked about wildlife, which companies supplied the most jobs, the drought and water systems, deaths at the Grand Canyon, life on the reservation, even disc golf! It felt like he knew a little bit about everything and everything he shared was super interesting!
What I most appreciated about Howard was that even though he’s already seen the Grand Canyon literally hundreds of times, not once did he ever make you feel it. Meaning he brought just as much enthusiasm and excitement to us seeing it for the first time as if he himself were seeing it for the first time. Only one person on our tour had been there before so for the other 5 of us it was a first and lifelong dream. Howard did a little countdown when we were 5 seconds from laying our eyes on it for the very first time. When we got out for a better look, two people in our group were so overwhelmed they cried and Howard just mentioned that it wasn’t uncommon for people to become emotional at seeing something so amazing. He was so comfortable to be around that he made the entire experience that much more memorable.
THE TOUR
Every tour is different – it depends on the dynamics of the group, the interests of those in the group, how long each stop takes, the weather, the business of the locations, etc. My tour may not end up being exactly the same as your tour but I wanted to provide detailed information on how we spent our day.
We had a 6:45 a.m. pick up time and didn’t want to be late so we headed outside around 6:30 a.m. Our driver Howard showed up shortly after we got outside. We were the first pick-up of the day and since we were ready to go, we started the day early. We had to stop in one other location to pick up 4 other woman (6 people total on our trip – nice small group). The other women were about 30-40 minutes away (Phoenix is big!!). Once everyone was in the van, our tour officially started! We drove for about an hour before taking a quick break to get coffee and snacks.
There are many stops throughout the day. We didn’t drive for longer than an hour straight through without a stop. We got to see many different things along the way. Here are some of the places we saw:
- Sonoran Desert: Was great to see all the cactus and various plants that can only survive in that environment
- Downtown Sedona: Drove through the downtown area and got to see the different hotels, restaurants, shops and attractions which was nice if you plan on going back for longer than a day sometime
- Red Rocks: Great photo opportunities in front of these gorgeous rocks! We even got to go on a little off-roading adventure that this tour group has a special permit to access the area.
- Cathedral Rock: Saw from a distance and learned about the history from Howard
- Bell Rock: Great photo opportunities in front of this rock as well
- Snoopy Rock: Saw from a distance and learned about the history from Howard
- Chapel of the Holy Cross: Saw from a distance and learned about the history from Howard
- Oak Creek Canyon: Took a nice long drive through Oak Creek Canyon. Got to see several of the camp grounds and cabin rentals, made a stop at a fresh alkaline water fountain where we were able to fill up our bottles and drink the freshest water on earth!
- Slide Rock State Park: Popular place for locals and tourists in the hot summer desert!
- Coconino National Forest: Another look at great area campground options plus this is where we saw a disc golf basket which turns out Howard is in a league (so is my boyfriend) and we got in a nice conversation about disc golf courses.
- San Francisco Peaks: Gorgeous snow covered mountains to view along your drive
We stopped for lunch at Cameron Trading Post in the Navajo Nation. This was a nice break since most of the driving was done and we were within an hour of the Grand Canyon. We got to get out and sit down at a restaurant for some local food. Honestly this is one of the main reasons we chose this tour group over the others that just include a sandwich to eat in the car… They have a big menu with many things to choose from. Most of us tried the local famed Navajo Taco which was delicious. It’s almost like a big piece of fried dough topped with taco stuff. I had the beef stew which was delicious! We then got about 45 minutes to browse the Cameron Trading Post which is a huge store with souvenirs and food. There is also a small gallery attached to it that has beautiful hand-crafted Native American baskets, blankets, paintings, etc. Most of these things are items only celebrities and millionaires can afford (including a $70,000 basket) but definitely worth taking a look.
- Navajo Nation: Learned really interesting facts about life on the reservation and got to see their homes
- Little Colorado River Gorge: Drove right alongside it and got some nice photos from the van
And now the big moment…… THE GRAND CANYON!
We were fortunate that it was an absolutely gorgeous perfect weather day! You could see for miles. Howard took us to the 6 best look out locations, all which were incredibly different (I’m sorry but I do not recall if we were on the North or South Rim and what lookout points we stopped at). He let us stay as long as we wanted at each lookout and took tons of pictures for people. It was just amazing! We also stopped at a small museum inside that had great lookouts, the history of the Grand Canyon in an easy-to-read story on the wall, re-creation of the Grand Canyon and a small gift shop. Howard also gave us about 30 minutes to browse the gift shops inside the Bright Angel Lodge and Cabins. On the way out, Howard drove us past the area where families who live at the Grand Canyon stay and told us about life in the park – where the kids go to school, etc. We did see some wildlife on our way out. Saw a bunch of Elk hanging out including a baby one nursing that we got to pull over briefly and take some photos. We were at the Grand Canyon for a total of about 3-4 hours. It was great!
On the drive home we lost the daylight obviously so there was less to see and people were tired. Howard was great about still giving some facts and information for those who were awake and wanted more but also gave us some quiet time for the people who wanted to take a nap. We stopped for a quick dinner on the way home at a large rest stop that had Subway, McDonald’s and a gas station with a variety of hot and cold foods.
It was a long day – we didn’t get back to our hotel until just before 11 p.m. but it was such an amazing experience! We got to see and do so much. We drove over 500 miles in one day! The price you pay for the tour vs what you get in return makes it such an amazing value! Book your tour with Southwest Tours – you will not regret it! I hope you found this review helpful.
