Apex Balloons was exactly what we were looking for. Jon is able to make everything work for you. 1st- we scheduled for January and had to change to March- NO PROBLEM. #2- continual contact via email and calls were on time and informative. #3- The meeting place is a Dunkin Donuts (which he was very specific about not being open at that time, so bring whatever you need and stop for a bathroom break if needed). #4- ON TIME- we got there at 5:30 (after doing a dry run the day before) and so was he- you can't miss the guy with a white van with a trailer and a wicker basket! #5- we drive a short way, Jon and Lindsay start unloading which is amazing to see how the process is done. #6- we are not picture takers as we want to just enjoy the experience, but not to worry as Jon and Lindsay took care of that. #7- Up, Up, and Away- what more can you say about your 1st time in a hot air balloon. It is just amazing to see Jon go up, change course, lower the balloon to 10ft off the ground while going up the side of a hill (we even changed course to land at a different spot. #8- Jon told us exactly what to do to land (bend your knees and lean against a certain side of the basket. #9- the landing was GREAT! #10- then we got to watch how Jon and Lindsay put the balloon all back into the bag and load the trailer then back to Dunkin Donuts. A very important note- the Hot Air Balloon community helps each other to land. People helped us and we stopped to help a solo flier which I very much respect. Also, we were apart of the RECORD BREAKING day with a TOTAL of 27 Hot Air Balloons in flight which is extremely exciting to be a part of and to witness. Jon has decided to only take people who are a group like a family or, in our case, my wife and I as it is just easier and safer. BUT he does have a VERY LARGE basket and balloon for bigger groups. AND Jon also flies planes to tow gliders. So we WILL be going back for another Hot Air Balloon ride PLUS fly in a glider. You just cannot go wrong with Jon! P.S. He also offers a cash discount fee which I love as I am a cash kinda guy and we tipped per $50 person because of the WONDEFUL EXPERIENCE! Have a GREAT TIME!

During Covid time, I was happy that hot air ballooning was even an option. Apex makes you rent the whole balloon, but gives you a discount. When else can you have an entire balloon to yourself for a reasonable rate??? It was great! We could move around & take all the photos we wanted without tripping over other people. Such a personal experience. Jon took us over the hills where we saw lots of different critters running around. We saw a larger company’s balloon with the max 16 people crammed in one basket, shoulder to shoulder, most not wearing masks...we were very thankful to have chosen Apex, & would gladly fly with them again anytime.

I lead by apologizing for the shameless appropriation of the Fifth Dimension song title (pro tip: make a playlist for your drive to meet Apex; turns out there a good number of songs about balloons -- though be forewarned that many are children's songs...). You can clearly see from Apex's existing reviews that this is a top-notch operation and I am happy to pile on the praise for Jon. But, allow me to be a bit more specific. Although the vast majority of people riding in a balloon are doing it for the first time, the pilot and crew who supports him have, one hopes, done that exact iteration of activity thousands of times before. You, gentle reader, likely have repetitive aspects of your job as well. Such repetition can cause boredom, apathy, and other things you would want to avoid when spending your hard-earned money on an experience like this. Despite decades of experience, Jon still seems legitimately in love with what he does and it shows. On the night we went up there were roughly a dozen other balloons aloft with us. Ours was one of the first to launch and the second-to-last to land, which meant we simply got to spend more time enjoying the magnificent scenery (we were aloft for 80 minutes total). Relatedly, while other balloon pilots seemed content to fly at a constant level over the minor mountains in the area, Jon worked instead to fly us up the hills for a stunning visual effect (like climbing the main peak on a rollercoaster but without the subsequent plunge). And, of course, Jon was also wonderfully personable during our time with him in the basket. Happy to recount stories he's doubtlessly told hundreds of times and answer our basic questions about ballooning. He also was great at telling us what he was going to be doing so as to assuage any minor anxiety that we might have about being suspended thousands of feet in the air. The entire experience, from start-to-finish was top-notch. In a place like Arizona you have a veritable smorgasbord of companies who will take you up in the air. I'm sure the other companies are just fine and you'll have a solid experience. You are, after all, seeing the same scenery. But, if you want an experience that will likely exceed your expectations, you can't go wrong with Apex.

Highly recommend John and Apex! My fiance planned a sunrise balloon ride, and for our first time ever giving one a try, this was fantastic. Jon and his team were amazing. Jon clearly knew his stuff, and made us comfortable and we had a great ride. I can't wait to take other family members out for another ride with John!
