- rashida7mengiWestampton, New Jersey11 contributionsHighlight of our trip!We had a wonderful ride on a beautiful morning - nice weather, wonderful views, and Natalie, who was the perfect tour guide for us! My husband and I got to ride River and Moo-Moo. They were well behaved horses. I bonded with River instantly because she has my personality - very calm, likes snacks, and has to be encouraged to move a bit faster, lol. You all made our day! We will visit again next time we are in Arizona. Thank you for a wonderful time, Natalie!Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 6, 2023
- Tara MLas Vegas, Nevada1 contributionA fun sunny morning in Arizona! The ride and the scenes were amazing! The horses were happy and well taken care of. The highlight of the adventure though was how the staff handled the delay (caused by another group being late). They turned this situation, that could be sore, to a memorable day for our family by managing it so well and making us feel special and taken care of! We loved the horses: Buzz, Barbara, Apache, and little black and enjoyed the conversation with Wrangles Eddie and Jake! Thank you!Visited October 2023Traveled with familyWritten October 14, 2023
- JTW12 contributionsA dream come true.We had last ridden 25 years ago on our Honeymoon and were so excited to be lucky enough to ride again on this our first holiday abroad since then. The stables, personnel and horses were all so very wonderful that it is difficult to know where to start! We were made to feel at home by the friendly staff the moment we arrived and set off at 8 in the morning for two hours, to avoid the heat. Paige and Wrangler Eddie were both so professional and kind and helpful. They did apologise for the no-show of the coyotes!!! The horses were clever and good natured and obviously enjoyed their jobs too. The trail was excellent and even though we could see where we were going, it still felt like we were in the middle of the Old West. I have long been a Western fan and this was the best thing out of our Best Ever Holiday so Kudos to Ponderosa and all the staff and horses there - thankyou for a memory I will treasure forever.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten November 6, 2023
- fishstick5Remsen, Iowa4 contributionsHighly recommend!Very fun experience for my daughter and I! We have good horse experience, but have never ridden in the desert so was fun to have horses that knew the terrain & a guide to explain the area. Fernanda was great and does her job well!!Visited December 2023Traveled with familyWritten December 31, 2023
- Beth SWaddell, Arizona15 contributionsBest trail ride in AZThis is by far the best trail ride experience I've had in Arizona. Eddie, our wrangler, was very knowledgeable of the area, the preserve itself, and the individual horses' temperment. He didn't just point out things; rather he took the time to explain the history and meaning of what we were seeing and experiencing. The horses we rode, Lucy, Crock, and Lil Black were just beautiful with excellent temperment. They were perfectly matched to my sons and my skill set. As the rear rider, Eddie made sure to check on me periodically and chat which was nice because I'm usually the rear rider and often forgotten about on other rides since I'm an experienced rider. Eddie did several safety checks on my sons and the other riders to ensure that everyone was safe and felt good about what they were doing. Every hill, he made sure to remind the riders of what way to lean to assist the horse. We went on the 2 hr ride and the time passed nicely. All the wranglers work on tips so please be sure to bring cash with you as the tip is not included when you book your trip.Visited January 2024Traveled with familyWritten January 16, 2024
- Jennifer KCleveland, Ohio7 contributionsA beautiful night with beautiful peopleWe had such an amazing time with Eddie and Natalie. They were so knowledgeable and gave us such clear instruction on what to do and when. They knew our horses so well that they were instantly able to direct them (and us) to get back on course. They took pictures of and with us and, for being strangers, by the end of the ride we felt like great friends. AND they found my friend’s lost debit/credit cards and her ID that fell out along the trail. Please note that our ride was AFTER sunset but they were determined to find the lost articles. And they delivered. They are an amazing crew and I’m so thankful to them for kicking off an amazing 2024 for me!Visited January 2024Traveled with friendsWritten January 27, 2024
- Janis OBristol, United Kingdom44 contributionsA taste of the Wild WestThe stables were easy to find with Google maps. Parking was easy. They have a little western town set up we took pictures around before our ride. We were greeted by a wrangler who got us checked in. Our ride started on time. They have a boardwalk which is raised so you can sit onto the horse instead of pulling yourself up which may benefit some riders. Chris was our guide, and Crazy was his horse. He was new to the area, but informed about the South Mountain park area. He pointed out some boulders that had been struck by lightening, and gave us info about the cactus in the area. He took our group photo with all of us on our horses which was a great keep sake. He did a safety check of our saddles during the ride which was comforting as we are not experienced riders. I was riding Eleanor, my husband was on Corn Dog, and my mom had Deputy. We did a 1 hour ride which for us was sufficient. After the ride we continued to drive up to Dobbins Lookout which is on the same road. Overall I would recommend this trip to other beginner riders who want a taste of the wild west. Thank you Chris & Crazy!Visited January 2024Traveled with familyWritten February 12, 2024
- BtmfedrBlair, Nebraska13 contributionsNight rideWrangler Chris and his crew are amazing. The horses we calm and ride was well organized. We did the night ride to T-bone steak house. Ride was beautiful on the south mountain trails and steak was very good. There was one guy who got drunk and was making problems. But Chris and the crew handled him professionally. Highly recommend!!Visited March 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten March 3, 2024
- Denise E1 contributionFantastic touristy thing to do.It has been a long time since my husband and I were on horses. If that’s the same for you, do t worry about it. This is about as safe as walking beside a horse. The wranglers are all volunteers and they absolutely LOVE these horses. One wrangler I know volunteers 8+ hours six days a week just so she can ride the horses. I really feel like being a volunteer causes you to care more. Safety of humans were first and then the horses. The trail we rode was beautiful, easy to navigate and safe. No natural predators. So the horses are relaxed. They may try to eat but we told not to let them. Gives them a belly ache. They are well cared for and loved. I’ll go back and ride again.Visited March 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten March 17, 2024

Our ride wranglers Chris & Emma went above & beyond to make sure everyone was safe on the trail & made it fun with their positive attitudes & interesting info along the way. Perfect way to see the beautiful desert with sweeping views of Phoenix below.Visited April 2024Traveled with familyWritten April 4, 2024

What an amzaing experience! My wife and I were able to take the kids for a pony ride around the grounds in the morning, then that night we went on the tbone steak sunset dinner ride. The whole experience is worth every penny and definitely worth every second. The wranglers are experienced and know the horses well. They are very knowledgeable when it comes to the area, and extremely helpful if your someone who isnt as comfortable on a horse. The view and experience was the best weve had in a very long time well needed and def going to be going again soon. If you want to forget your in the city this is the thing to do. Takes you into the back hills of South Mountain where you get to see the wildlife up close and expreince a little piece of what folks did before the histle and bussle of the big city.

Great trip with my older kids riding horses at an affordable price. Staff was super friendly and helpful. I would recommend the Sunset ride as we saw extraordinary views, lighting was great, with wildlife darting in and out. It all combine for a great trip. The horses know the trail well, and were perfectly behaved.

The horses are beautiful animals and obviously well cared for and loved. The terrain on the walking trail is gorgeous. I recommend the 7 am trail ride because it’s very serene and beautiful as you watch the sunrise. The ranch hands are very personable and knowledgeable and make sure that you have a safe and enjoyable ride! Highly recommended! C.J.

Recently I becam an above the knee amputee. This was my first time riding a horse since a drunk driver took my leg. The staff was very sensitive in allowing me to make decisions about my ride without making me feel I was inconveniencing them in any way. After a discussion with the front desk, I decided to wear my prosthesis on the ride. Halfway through, it fell off. Natalie immediately got off her horse, and when I told her I wouldn’t be able to put it back on while on the horse, she made sure I was comfortable riding with just my residual leg, strapped my prosthesis to her horse and led us through the rest of the ride! She took all of this in stride and continually checked on me to make sure I was safe and comfortable. Natalie made this new adventure more than I could ever imagine! Thank you!

The staff was wonderful, we were treated like friends from the start. Very personable, shared their experiences with us and answered all of our questions. Made sure we were all safe the whole ride. Entertained our 7 year old while treating her like a "big kid" and making sure she was safe so mom and dad could enjoy the ride too. We had a party of 7 and all of us had an amazing time. Can't say enough good things about this place!

Ponderosa Stables wasn't our first choice, but the first choice never returned our call. The only reason Ponderosa wasn't our first choice was that at this time they were only offering one hour rides, My wife is an experienced rider and we were hoping for a longer ride.
At any rate, we thoroughly enjoyed our ride through the scenic Arizona desert. Bailey was a great wrangler, engaging with all the riders, pointing out the scenery and points of interest and demonstrating her amazing horsemanship skills.
We will definitely be back for the dinner ride next time we are in Phoenix.

We were hoping to find a longer ride, but all the same we really enjoyed our hour long ride with Ponderosa Stables. The wranglers were personable, informative, and took great care of everyone on the ride. They even made sure to trot our 9 year old's horse so he would have a more memorable time. He loved it!
The horses were well trained and the scenery was beautiful. I would love to do one of the dinner rides if we're ever back in the area.

My wife and I wanted a memorable horse ride that gave us a taste of the 'Real West' during our vacation. The 'T-Bone Steak Ride' didn't disappoint. We had an awesome evening riding in the dark with well trained and safety conscious guides who made the trip more enjoyable. The view of the entire city of Phoenix at night coming down the mountain was amazing. The restaurant we ate at was exactly the experience we were looking for. I highly recommend this for beginner to experienced riders as it's something you can't easily duplicate in many parts of the country.

I would 100% come back and if we had more time this trip we probably would. We went all in for a 3 hour morning ride and had Moo, Ash, Mabel, Darcy, Gator, Angus and Judy. Our 2 wranglers were amazing and made it so fun. The trail was awesome, great for all levels of rider. So many stunning photo opportunities and the horses were very well behaved and basically on autopilot. They knew exactly where they were going and what was coming next. My kids 13,13, 11 and 9 had a blast and have been talking about their time spent with their horse in the desert since they got in the car. The 2 hour ride was well worth it and we really appreciated the conversation and silent times to just appreciate the ride and scenery and point things out ourselves. It was a wonderful experience and I hope some day to come back.

So we took this trail ride last night and can't say enough about how good it was. These are the trail rides on Central Ave as you enter South Mountain park, and one of the ride options is an evening ride to a nearby steakhouse for dinner and back, about an hour each way.
Moonlit ride yesterday with terrific views of the mountain and pretty views of the valley at night - a bright moon means you see a lot more than you'd think. You leave at 6pm so in the spring or earlier fall it would be a sunset ride.
Qualified wranglers, good horses, and tasty food! Really a terrific night.

Are you guys open and still doing rides at this time?

We will be visiting AZ in the second week of March, and are wondering if you have any discounts available at this time?

I'm planning a trip for myself and two sisters in May of this year to Arizona. They both have birthdays near the end of that month. The oldest will be 71 and the other will be 67. Neither have ridden a horse before. Do you think a 1 hour trail ride would be ok for them?
Written March 17, 2019
I think that would be a wonderful experience for them. I am 64 and had a great time. Janine and Jim or any of the other ranch folks will be certain that you and your family will be safe and enjoy the ride. They have all the knowledge and experience you need to enjoy the ride. I fell in love with Rebul. He was a beautiful and big boy. He was so gentle. He leaned his head on mine and there we waited for the ride to begin. I can't wait to go again. Maybe Rebul and I can meet again!!!

Are you still offering the 2 hour petroglyph rides? It sounds perfect for me. When are they available and what is the cost? Many thanks!
Written February 25, 2016
We do still offer the Petroglyph ride. We usually at this time of year do them first thing in the morning due to the heat. The cost is $ 55.00 per person. A reservation is needed.
