This is at the top / end of the road into South Mountain Park. We started from the south entrance. To condition drivers to going slow, the first half mile or so has speed humps ever 200 yards or so. It serves its purpose, so you are not speeding as you start climbing. There were a couple of points where it looks like they do (or did) collect fees for entrance, but no one was on duty the day we went (Presidents' Day, so maybe that was special...?).

The total length of the road is just over 5 miles. The first mile or so is flat, but after that you are ascending along the side of the mountain. On the way up you are on the 'inside' of the curves. On the way down, you are on the 'outside', occasionally with no guard rails. If you have a fear of heights, this might not be the road for you. I didn't think it was too bad, though.

At the top, there is an intersection for various points (the TV towers, etc.). Signs are well-marked for the lookout, though. We were initially skeptical of whether we'd find a parking spot, but we got one just before we had to exit the loop-lot and circle back. Later, as we walked back to the car, more spots had opened up. I was only here briefly, so I have no idea how consistently it is crowded / open re: parking.

We walked from the car up to the first observation platform. You also pass some people selling (Indian, I assumed) jewelry. The first platform has good views. The slightly lower and larger stone structure probably has similar views but we did not walk down there. It was a sunny day and we could readily see all of Phoenix spread out in the valley below us.

We didn't stay that long, but the views were worth the drive. In the summer, I'm guessing this place is quite hot.

Good for people that don't totally want to hike but want the experience. Driving up the park is easy with good views along the way and the main attraction of the look out provides a breath taking view of the city. Clean bathrooms at the base of the look out, a 20 minute drive up and a 20 minute drive back.

The Dobbins lookout is located about a half hour drive outside of Phoenix, and is a well worth trip for the amazing views. We stopped and took in the panoramic views of Phoenix and the surrounding areas in the valley and were blown away. I highly recommend a quick trip out to the lookout for the views and a picnic (during cooler days). You won’t be disappointed!

If you're not one for hiking, this drive in the South Mountain Park will afford you some lovely views.

The road is quite windy and there's no shoulders so best to keep to the speed limit. There are a number if bicycles on the road so please be careful. When we were coming back down a car going up went around a biker, crossed the line and came very close to us as we passed. Please wait for until it's clear before passing a biker as there's nowhere for the other car to get out of the way.

There's plenty of parking at the lookout. Also a few other lookouts other than Dobbin's when you're at the top but Dobbins does provide the best views.

I would agree with the reviews that say it was well worth the drive up. Wish we would have had more time to explore some of the easy trails. Families with small children will want to make sure to take their hands if they want to go near the edge although it is not an actual cliff. Well-maintained park. Even the pit toilets at the top were as clean as you could expect. Good job Phoenix!

Awesome place to see the sunset. The parking is limited so go early! It gets very crowded. Also the drive up is steep and curvy. Recommend a good driver that doesn’t mind heights. My palms were sweating on the steering wheel so don’t look down! The view once at the top is well worth it though.

You drive up a very curvy road but at the top you get the best view. You can see the city of Phoenix and the surrounding area.
You can buy some really nice jewelry and things at the top from vendors. On a clear day you can see for miles.

You want a great view of Phoenix and the complete Valley of the Sun? – this is it. At an altitude of 2,300 feet, on a clear day you can see almost forever. East, West, North, South! Beautiful – this is perfect for nature lovers, picnickers, hikers and all! The view of this cauldron-like landscape surrounded by mountains is a magnificent experience of the Southwests characteristics and beauty. A must visit if in Phoenix!

The road up South Mountain is worth the drive by itself. A great curvy climb with good pavement and a couple of places to stop and look out. But when you get to Dobbin's Lookout the view is stunning. The only place to take panorama pictures of Metro Phoenix. This a must do when in the Phoenix area. I need to go back and get some night shots of the city!

Just a few minutes' drive from central Phoenix. It is worth the drive. Great views of the entire valley of the sun. Lots of walking/hiking trails. Equestrian friendly and seems to be very safe. We went on a weekday and the vehicle traffic was very light. You can drive around to several different viewpoints. Perhaps the best part, it was FREE to enter. Very well maintained.
