Good for people that don't totally want to hike but want the experience. Driving up the park is easy with good views along the way and the main attraction of the look out provides a breath taking view of the city. Clean bathrooms at the base of the look out, a 20 minute drive up and a 20 minute drive back.

This is at the top / end of the road into South Mountain Park. We started from the south entrance. To condition drivers to going slow, the first half mile or so has speed humps ever 200 yards or so. It serves its purpose, so you are not speeding as you start climbing. There were a couple of points where it looks like they do (or did) collect fees for entrance, but no one was on duty the day we went (Presidents' Day, so maybe that was special...?).

The total length of the road is just over 5 miles. The first mile or so is flat, but after that you are ascending along the side of the mountain. On the way up you are on the 'inside' of the curves. On the way down, you are on the 'outside', occasionally with no guard rails. If you have a fear of heights, this might not be the road for you. I didn't think it was too bad, though.

At the top, there is an intersection for various points (the TV towers, etc.). Signs are well-marked for the lookout, though. We were initially skeptical of whether we'd find a parking spot, but we got one just before we had to exit the loop-lot and circle back. Later, as we walked back to the car, more spots had opened up. I was only here briefly, so I have no idea how consistently it is crowded / open re: parking.

We walked from the car up to the first observation platform. You also pass some people selling (Indian, I assumed) jewelry. The first platform has good views. The slightly lower and larger stone structure probably has similar views but we did not walk down there. It was a sunny day and we could readily see all of Phoenix spread out in the valley below us.

We didn't stay that long, but the views were worth the drive. In the summer, I'm guessing this place is quite hot.

I made the trip to Dobbins Lookout on my own and really enjoyed myself. The drive up was gorgeous, and following the speed limits was easy due to the sharp curves and turns. I did get stuck behind two separate bicyclists heading up, and finding a straightaway to pass them required patience. Once I made it to the top the cool wind and gorgeous span of desert and mountains gave me quite a lovely greeting. Since my husband has just gotten out of the hospital after surgery on a ruptured quad-patellar tendon from a hike, I stayed off the trails and just enjoyed the view from the point and stone lookout house. Glad I went but really sad my husband had to miss out. The ride down was easy but I pitied the long lines of cars stuck behind more cyclists. If you’re in there are, definitely go!

We thought maybe we could see a good sunset by visiting here. The road is very winding with 15-25 mile speeds. Very busy with bicycles and cars. We had driven the Apache trail and felt this was more busy and curvy. We ended up leaving after some viewing and photos. Too busy, too hazy to see a good sunset and didn't feel it would be safe to drive those curves in the dark! Glad we did it, but won't be trying it again!

If you're not one for hiking, this drive in the South Mountain Park will afford you some lovely views.

The road is quite windy and there's no shoulders so best to keep to the speed limit. There are a number if bicycles on the road so please be careful. When we were coming back down a car going up went around a biker, crossed the line and came very close to us as we passed. Please wait for until it's clear before passing a biker as there's nowhere for the other car to get out of the way.

There's plenty of parking at the lookout. Also a few other lookouts other than Dobbin's when you're at the top but Dobbins does provide the best views.

You drive up a very curvy road but at the top you get the best view. You can see the city of Phoenix and the surrounding area.
You can buy some really nice jewelry and things at the top from vendors. On a clear day you can see for miles.

Drive to the top then climb around to your heart's desire. The drive itself is super fun and scenic too. It's very open with few if any barriers. Great place for a picnic and there are plenty of places you can climb to and be secluded!

The road up South Mountain is worth the drive by itself. A great curvy climb with good pavement and a couple of places to stop and look out. But when you get to Dobbin's Lookout the view is stunning. The only place to take panorama pictures of Metro Phoenix. This a must do when in the Phoenix area. I need to go back and get some night shots of the city!

We found out about this from our waitress at Waffle House. It was fairly easy to find and it was a nice drive through the park up South Mountain. You have to watch out for bikes and skateboarders on the drive. There is a parking lot at the top and a structure with a great view of the entire valley. We drove up but you could also hike up the mountain. The best part was this was free. Highly recommend doing this with kids.

Can drive up to here so if mobility is an issue you can get a great view. Good for kids as there's lots to see from every direction.
