My husband and I were interested in visiting the little border town of Nogales..learn the history and culture. Since the town has its sister city also know as Nogales Sonora Mexico right across the border we wanted to know where to cross and any tips. The woman who helped us was very knowledgeable and kind. She asked if we planned lunch and suggested a restaurant nearby. We had a great day exploring. Had lunch a t local Mexican restaurant which was fabulous. Thanks so much for all your advice and suggestions! Very helpful!

This visitor center is located in a pleasant little park with two new murals. The staff were anxious to be helpful. There was lots of local info. Nogales has some surprising things; this place can help you find them. (One is all of the local history, much of it related to the border. The Pimeria Alta Museum gives a good overview.)

My husband and I were so pleased with the amazing tips given to us by Maggie at thevisitors center! She provided a clean restroom followed by great tips on where to park, where to go and what to eat when crossing the border! Totally eliminated all of our worries and concerns! All tips were spot on.. La Roca for lunch was a fabulous treat! Thanks Maggie for your help in making our "lunch in Mexico" a great adventure!

My wife and I toured Arizona from the Four Corners all the way down to Nogales. The visitor center was our first stop. We met Liliana and she is THE source of information on where to go and what to do. She provided us a much needed map of the city and advised us on parking locations. This should be your first stop too if you have not been here before!

Sonora/Mexico Journal, passing through Kino Park, Nogales, Arizona

Late Spring, 2013: I make a return trip to the Sonoran Desert. My Macbook Air crashes. I lose my smart phone/camera.

1678: Father Eusebio Kino, after many delays, but with the financial support of his single mom and his sisters, arrives to the Sonora Desert, lamenting to his explorer friend Manje:

“There’s nothing easy about this land,” Eusebio Kino said, “there’s nothing soft or dainty about it, or even comfortable. It juts and stabs and trips and bites, and the summer son is so harsh it sears your eyes and broils your flesh. It rarely rains, but when it does, it often rains too much. And when the wind blows, it always blows too long, or sometimes not long enough” [qtd. in Clevenger's The Story of Kino and Manje in the Pimería].

June 1, 2013: I ride my bike to the Ogden Front Runner Station to start my 800 mile trip to teach EFL in Nogales and volunteer for Los Samaritanos, a first-aid response team providing water, food, and medical care for migrants in the Sonoran Desert. I’ve got a waterproof backback & tent and a portable solar Sherpa 50 charger, awarded by WSU for years of service.

July 9, 2005: Shanti Sellz and Daniel Strauss, student volunteers of a humanitarian group of young people called “No More Deaths,” are patrolling the Sonoran Desert just outside Arivaca, a small town near the Nogales, Mexico border, 60 miles from Tucson. They are arrested by Border Patrol Agents, criminally charged with felonies after they medically evacuate three dehydrated migrant men lying in the desert in critical condition, sickened from drinking water from a contaminated cattle trough.

July 5, 2013: On a back road outside Arivaca, my Samaritanos team encounters a Guatemalan lost, robbed, dehydrated and confused, refusing a 911 call. He was told Los Angeles was “tras la loma.” We know there is a “No More Deaths” camp nearby. He gets into the back seat of our SUV.

July 21, 2013: I join the Kino Initiative’s Comedor [Dining Room] in Nogales, Mexico, which provides food, clothes, and phones for homeless migrants, some from as far away as Tierra del Fuego. Arturo, a 28-year old husband and father, has just been captured and deported, all of his personal belongings confiscated. He wants to reach his wife and two daughters in Dallas, Texas. He’s planning another trek through the desert.

In 1965, a statue of Kino was donated to the United States Capitol's National Statuary Hall collection, one of only two statues representing the heroes of Arizona. An immigrant from Italy, Kino lived for 33 years in the Sonora from 1678 until his death in Magdalena, Mexico in 1711 (where his bones are now displayed, discovered by Mexican historian & archaeologist, Dr. Jorge Olvera). Kino was a priest, linguist, mathematician, map-maker, and agriculturalist who opposed the slavery and forced labor of the indigenous population. Historian Dr. James Dolph, Weber State University, took me on a tour of 1600s pueblos established by Kino in Northern Mexico.

August 15, 2013: Say my goodbyes to my EFL students at the Kino Park Chamber of Commerce, The Family Resource Center of Arizona/Nogales, and La Educación Municipal in Nogales, Mexico; among the many stories:

Jesús: ten-year-old Taekwondo specialist who comes to see me in the evenings to swap ghost stories

Jackie: 10-year-old hired by her taco-stand boss because of her personality and English language skills, which attract American tourists. She’s trying to save enough money to go to La Universidad de Monterrey and become an airline pilot.

Roberto y Adriana: a Romeo & Juliet couple who met at an Hermosillo business class. He’s a waiter at the Denny’s on the Arizona side of Nogales. She lives on the Mexican side.

Maricela: a 12-year-old who loves Avril Lavigne’s interpretation of John Lennon’s “Imagine.” It’s the only English she knew at first.

Ernesto: an engineering graduate of Instituto Tecnológico de Nogales with an unpaid internship at a maquila hoping to get hired on but wishing he could work on the U.S. side. Maquilas pay 8 dollars a DAY in Nogales/Mexico while in Arizona the mínimum wage is almost 8 dollars an HOUR ($7.90).

August 21, 2013: The Road Home: Gunnison to Payson, Utah. 70 miles in one day: I know, I know…people run 100 miles in a day. But for me, it was my fastest, longest stretch, and I just make the last Utah Transit Authority Bus at 7:52 pm, connecting to Front Runner Light Rail from Provo to the Ogden station. Enjoy swapping stories with others on the special car designated for bikers.

I travel often to Santa Cruz County, and always stop in to learn what is new in the area. They are connected with local organizations, and often have information on activities that might not be advertised in popular venues.

Worth the visit, if nothing else to see the border. Just be careful when you explore the area close to the border. Very few tourist sites.

Though having international travel experience, there are nuances about whether to drive a rental car into Mexico, where to get the best currency exchange rates, etc. which we learned here. This outlet, billed as an Arizona Tourism Office, opens at 10:00 a.m. Lacy, their staff on duty, was very courteous and provided solid information She also was pleased to have learned we had breakfast in Rio Rico at one of their chamber member's establishments.
