Perfect spa day!
Feb 2020 • Solo
I spent two wonderful days in Prana Spa at Hostería Monte Selva. I’m not sure exactly their business arrangement, but their booking office is right off the main park square next to Banco Pichincha. There, they show whatever specials they have, but you can basically pick and choose to customize your service. Important hints: going during the week and not on weekends is optimal. Also, the ladies at the booking office go for lunch from 12-2 - thus no recruiting happening during those hours. Both days I walked over a little after 11:00 and told them what I wanted. They closed the office and walked me the few blocks to the spa and got me checked in and set up with a therapist. Both days I was there until 3:30-4:00 with the place all to myself (last day an older gentleman came in later but was very respectful and we stayed out of each other’s way). The package I saw them offering was “Friends Pack” for $25 which included 30 minute relax massage, face mask (clay or chocolate), hot herbal tea and use of all facilities. I upgraded to an hour massage for $35 and she used hot stones on me as well. Did a light face cleansing and scrub before applying mask and then moisturizer afterwards (this was after I turned face up during massage). The massage was perfect for what I wanted (I’d done a deep elsewhere a few days before - see other review). You can pay to change to a sports/deep tissue, but this was perfect. Still firm pressure, but smooth and relaxing. I’d strained a muscle in my knee/leg day before at the waterfalls and asked her to give special attention, which she did. Got it all worked out so I could do jungle tour the next day. Jessica was my therapist both days and I felt she provided a perfect spa experience. Afterwards, I spent the rest of the day alternating in the hot natural thermal pool (the only place to have their own source of one, just like the public baths), hydro pool, Turkish (steam w/ eucalyptus) sauna, dry sauna, and outdoor pools/jacuzzi. Everything was very clean by Ecuadorian standards (if you want sterile and pristine, pay US prices and go elsewhere). The thermal pool is natural, so looks the way it should. There are two hydro pools - my first day one was on and the other drained and the next day they were switched - so clearly they drain and clean. Bathrooms very clean, as well as pool. Some of the facilities finishes are a bit rough by US standards, but that’s common in Ecuador. I saw people cleaning and improving the facilities and it looks like they were renovating some of the hostel rooms as well. Note: you will need to bring your own bathing cap (which is required) and towel. I would definitely come back here on my next trip to Baños. The only negative was the music in the outside pool area. It emanated from the bar area beside the restaurant, despite the fact that there was nobody there. It was loud and sometimes vulgar dance music, hardly appropriate for relaxing in that beautiful setting. I would suggest they confine that to evening hours or times when there are patrons at the bar and play soothing spa or Andes music during the day - or even nothing. I enjoyed resting out by the pool, but eventually found myself fleeing from the music. Otherwise, it was a perfect way to spend the day between a late breakfast and early dinner. :)

Good value for money

I enjoyed a full body massage and chocolate body wrap (60min, USD35). The massage was surprisingly good and being wrapped in chocolate is just delicious.

Outstanding value for money for a spa day

We saw their advert for Jacuzzi, pool, sauna and steam bath (banos de cajon) use for $8: an absolute bargain compared to alternatives in Banos.

Going to their main site at Monte Selva Hotel (close to town), we had full day access to: volcanic hot spring thermal bath (up to 40 degrees Celsius; apparently the only hotel to have its own volcanic water outlet in Banos); two Jacuzzis (indoor and outdoor); outdoor pool (not heated); polar pool; salt water pool and the banos de cajon steam bath treatment (with mud mask!). Staff were remarkably friendly and helpful. We were allowed to view the spa area before paying. The shower areas were pristine and the rest of the communal spa area was clean.

The hotel could do with a lick of fresh paint; if you're looking for state of the art luxury, Prana Spa may not be for you. But at $8, Prana Spa was outstanding.

Good views too from the outdoor spots!

We went on a Monday in the early afternoon and had the WHOLE spa to ourselves for about an hour. Many more people from 4 pm ish. The facilities close at 8 pm though it is best to arrive early as it is not only less busy but also the outdoor area could be better lit.

Swimming caps cost $1 here, as do towels. Bring shampoo!

I went for a "prana experience" which incluedes a full body massage, a facial and a pedicure for $45.

The massage was good and really relaxing. Compared to the ones I had in Switzerland it wasn't the same high quality, but definitly worth the price.

I never had a facial before, but for me it wasn't that relaxing. However my skin feels clearer now.

Also the pedicure was a first for me. After travelling quite a time now my feet looked horribly and they did a great job on them.
The procedure hurt though. And one of the girls injured a little bit my cuticle, what I imagine shouldn't happen. But apart from this I'm really happy with my feet now.

Cheap Spa Day can spend the full day here easily.

We booked a Spa Day with Prana Spa and had an inclusive facial and massage, although the facial was a bit rushed (as one of the girls was called at short notice and she forgot to put moisturiser on afterwards) the back massage was amazing!! We then had use of the facilities for as long as we wanted, there is an outdoor pool and jaccuzi, indoor sauna and steam room and a wellbeing pool with natural minerals. There are also sun loungers and showers, you can easily spend a day here.

Great wax

Was so excited after 1.5 months of traveling to find a place in baños that offered Brazilian waxing. The girl did a great job, it was basically painless and so affordable, especially compared to American standards. Would definitely recommend these ladies!

Good value, good service

I have been here on two occasions - once for a brazilian wax and again for a massage. I was a bit nervous about the brazilian wax, because they're not hugely common in South America. It took quite a long time, as she was a bit slow. The upside was that it hurt less than most brazilians I've had in the past, with good results.

The massage was also good, much better than I thought it would be - really relaxing, just the right amount of pressure for me

Brazillian wax was very well done
Went and had a brazillian wax which is always risky when you try a new place, let alone somewhere that the brazillian is not common. Super thorough and well done. Probably better than some waxes I've had done at home in Sydney, Australia. Cheap too for $15

Terrible service! Therapist was no show to do massage!

I'll start by sayingif were possible to rate this zero stars I would!

I went along to Prana Spa to book a massage as we had been past the Ambato/Halflants shop a few times and I saw they had some good offers on.

It was a Sunday so I appreciate that the girl (Baby was her name I believe) was on her own. She said that because she was on her ownforthe day they couldn{t do a waxing that I wanted, which was fine but she could do the package massage I wanted. She asked me to come back in an hour at 6pm for a full body massage/reflexology/face massage/hot stones/essential oils package, which at $25 was a bargain called the Prana Massage.

However when I came back at 6pm, after wasting an hour looking around town, she was nowhere to be seen. I waited for 20 minutes and then noticed that she had left the bookings page open showing that she actually already had someone booked in for a Prana Massage at 6pm and given it takes 65 mins, I was absolutely amazed that she had asked me to come back at 6pm too! She either already had the booking or had takenit in my absence - hideous treatment and customer service.

After another 10 minutes I noticed ont he flyer that they had other sites so I left to find another shop and complain. As it was I might as well have not bothered because the look I got from the girl there was of pure noncholance about it all.

I ended up going next door to the other shop to a lovely place called Manos Magicas Spa-Massage on Luis A Martinez. If I were anyone reading this, I'd go there, they're packages are just as good value, if not better, they actually show up and they understand customer service. If the owner of Prana is reading this, get some decent staff who actually show up for massages and perhaps put your staff through customer service training - your team area joke!

Good massage- not bad, not amazing
Sep 2012 • Couples
I went here after seeing a flyer for a massage for $20 with a free facial. It was a good massage, but not very deep or strong. Good for relaxation. If you want a stronger massage, there have been good reviews for Stay in Touch Massage, but it is more expensive ($35)
