About
Under new ownership and still a great place to ride, we offer trail rides in the beautiful ponderosa pines! From May 1st through September 30th, we offer rides through the Coconino National Forest of Arizona’s high country, in the town of Mormon Lake, AZ, 30 miles southeast of Flagstaff. Of course, with great weather, we may open a little earlier or stay a little later. Our trails and horses are good for beginner riders, families, and riders of all levels. Our mission is to provide well-trained and well-cared-for animals along with professional wranglers for our customers. We feel when these things are combined, we can provide a safe, relaxing, and enjoyable ride for the whole family! We strive to make sure every rider has a fun horseback ride, so they can have a truly unique sense of the old dusty trail. We were so impressed with how well cared for the horses were, how our guide knew so much about all their horses and their backgrounds, and how well kept the place was. It was a wonderful ride. We highly recommend them if you're looking to go horseback riding in the Mormon Lake area.

My grandson and I had a great time on our mountain trail ride. Our guide, Robert, was outstanding, and he was very kind to my unsure young rider, personable and an outstanding wrangler. In fact, my grandson asked as soon as we left when we could come back and ride again. Our horses were gentle, responsive, and healthy. The trail in the forest, with plenty of shade, yet spacious enough that you weren't ducking branches or brushing up against trees. We have spent many years exploring Arizona and this was a really fun time. I recommend it to anyone who likes horses, remembers TV westerns like Bonanza or even Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, and enjoys some non-strenuous outdoor adventuring will have a blast. It is an especially fun activity to do with the grand kids. We are definitely making a return trip. After our ride we were able to go see a newly born foal -- what a treat!

We appreciate the great review of our mountain trail ride, gentle horses, and incredible staff. We try to offer the best in horseback riding in the greater Flagstaff area. The area at Mormon Lake is great for a stroll on horseback through the pines. Horseback riding is great for the whole family, ages 6 and up. I'm happy to hear you were able to stop by and take a peek at June Bug, our newest addition to our horse family. Her mother, Big Rose, is caring for her well. We look forward to seeing you again soon. Take care.

Absolutely loved every minute of this trail ride! Our guide was Roger and he was delightful and very knowledgeable about the trail. The trails are hilly and rocky but the horses were sure footed (meaning they walk well on rocky ground). The horses were in beautiful condition and obviously well loved and cared for. The ride is walk only due to the rocky terrain but that allows the riders to sit back and enjoy the beautiful coconino national forest. The ride was suitable for beginners but offers enough of a challenge that you never get bored on the ride! The customer service is wonderful and TroyScott (owner/manager) is attentive and friendly. I definitely recommend this trail riding location is you are in the greater Flagstaff, AZ area!!

What a great experience. I was a little nervous as I had not been on a horse in over 15 years, but the horse (dollar) was calm and easy to steer, the wrangler was a professional and friendly lead who told me stories as we rode. He kept me calm and the trail was rocky enough to provide a challenge. This would definitely be great for families. I can’t wait to go back!

Riding through the pines with High Mountain Trail Rides was one of our highlights of our trip to northern Arizona. Almost everyone in our party were inexperienced riders, yet after our
1 1/2 hour trail ride, all wanted to do it again. Our wrangler Sid was great and very personable. We appreciated that because we arrived early we were able to start on our trail ride early as no other groups were scheduled. The pines provided nice shade, so it wasn’t too hot. The drive back to Phoenix was so pretty heading south and through Camp Verde rather than going back to Flagstaff and down the I17.

Sounds like you enjoyed yourselves. Riding through the pines is just so peaceful and majestic. We love when guests provide feedback that we were the highlight of their trip. Northern Arizona, especially here in Mormon Lake at 7,100 ft, is much cooler than the valley. There is two ways to access us and look like you got the best of both. We hope that you think of us again when in the area. Take care.

My wife and I went on a 90-minute trail ride last weekend and the team at HMTR could not have done a better job. I have spent a lot of time around stables and rental horses and these guys do a great job. The horses were in good condition and well cared for. In addition, our guides Robert and Cameron mad the ride fun and interesting. The ride through the pine forest was a great break from the heat of the Sedona desert.

They do a good job of adapting the ride to all levels of riders and run a very good operation. Highly recommended.

My husband, daughter (age 16) and I had a wonderful experience with Mason as our guide. It was my daughter's first time riding and her horse was a perfect fit for her. We rode through the woods and then out to an open field where we had an opportunity to rest and take pictures. Mason was very attentive to all in the group, informative about the history of that area in the Coconino Forest, and experienced and comfortable around the horses. We felt confident that we were in good hands at all times. I would certainly recommend High Mountain Trail Rides. It was a highlight of our trip.

We had a great experience with Robert, our guide, and overall. We arrived and we were greeted warmly and everyone was respectful about distancing and masks. Once we left the corral we were able to take off our masks and enjoy the ride through the forest. The hour was just right for us and the scenery was amazing. Robert was friendly and knowledgable. The horses were well-behaved and sweet. On a side note, Mormon Lake is a fun little place to explore if you have the time. Lots of hiking, but mostly ATVs.

My husband and I have a cabin at Mormon Lake and the guys were working on a home improvement project so my mother in law and I kind of decided on a whim to go horseback riding. It’s been many years since I’ve been on a horse so I was a little nervous. Robert, our awesome guide, immediately put me at ease and our horses, Big Mama and Nico were wonderful. The horses look very well cared for and had calm demeanors. We really enjoyed Robert’s personality and his knowledge of the Mormon Lake area. I can’t wait to go again!

We had an excellent time horseback riding through the forest with our rider, Robert. Robert was incredibly engaging and easy to talk to. He is clearly an expert and helped everyone feel at ease on their horse. It was an amazing time and I would recommend this ranch to anyone who’d like to ride out on a trail while in northern Arizona!
