a "must" experience of nature and good taste
Dec 2019
You can trek about 5 hours from Tambo in Colonia Suiza upwards.

Or you can go to Cerro Catedral, take the chairlift, walk for around 2.5 hours to Cancha de Fútbol, down 1 hour to the forest in Rucaco Valley. After a rest, a 30 min walk will take you to the end of the valley, and up you go to Brecha Negra (1 hour ). From there, downwards to Refugio Jakob (1 hour).

A beautiful view, a brand new Refugio very recently built, with state of the art electric generator running of cascade water powering up heating, LED lighting, and stove, but still having a wood stove and closed chimney.
Rooms for 2, 4, or 32.
Just make sure to book in advance, specially from Christmas to mid Feb which is high season.
You can reserve and pay in advance by transfer in local money. Paypal was about to be deployed just a week ago.
Claudio takes care of the place since the late 70´s. His daughter Bianca is covering him when not around.
No cell phone signal, but VHF radio available for emergency use only.
Spend two nights here, so you can spend a full day at Laguna de Los Témpanos and Paso Schweitzer.
Next step can be down to Tambo, or down through Casalata to Mascardi lake.
Or to Refugio Laguna Negra (with guide only).

Don´t miss it.
Been there more than 10 times, and planning to go again soon.

Beautiful and peaceful
Mar 2017 • Couples
After staying the previous night at Refugio Frey, it was a pleasure and a surprise to come to this lovely, clean, and peaceful hut on the shore of Lake Jakob. The staff were very accommodating and served an incredibly delicious lentil stew. The serving was so generous that I doubted I could finish it ... but I did. This destination is out of the way, but definitely worth the trip.

Cozy Hut Invites Interaction
Jan 2017 • Couples
I doubt this is the most visited of the huts in the area - but it was a highlight for us. Wonderful campsites, unexpectedly nice bathrooms, cozy lodge.

From here you can hike through to Los Cesares, near Pampa LInda - less improved trail but a way to avoid backtracking to Bariloche and taking the bus.

GREAT HIKE
Dec 2015 • Friends
The hike out to this lake can be done from numerous different ways. I recommend coming down from Fray.. Its beautiful. The refugio itself is so quaint and lovely. If you have a few days, heading out here is totally worth it!

A beautiful spot
Feb 2016 • Friends
This lake is tucked in the mountains in a perfect location. An easy days walk from the road with a friendly refugio for the night.

Beautiful but difficult trail
We walked from refugio Frey to refugio Jacob. The trail is stiff, gravelled, and dangerous. But view is masculine. Camp site at refugio Jacob was disapointing. We walked 3 more hours to find better camp site.
