100 miles of beautiful landscapes: mountains, forests and, obviously, lakes! The road was recently paved and is in good condition. Take your time and stop at every view point to enjoy the landscape and take pictures. Ideal for bikers or hitchhikers, you can spend the night (or days) in almost every lake.

We took a drive above and around the seven lakes. There so many beautiful views from the road and spots to stop and take pictures.

Lovely driving road with varied scenery along its length. Little traffic out of season and good signage throughout its length.

This road is perhaps the most beautiful drive in the world. We took it from Bariloche to San Martin de los Andes. You pass seven magnificent alpine lakes, beautiful rivers, and those majestic Andes. You have to take this road if in the area. Rent a car, do the route. You can do it easily in one day, with many... More

Joined Los Alerces Viajes y Tourismo on their scenic return day tour from San Martin de la Andes travelling via the 7 lagos / lakes to Villa la Angostura (I travelled x 1 way and was dropped off in my hotel in Villa La Angostura). Journeyed via a small mini bus with frequent photo stops along the way. Excellent day... More

We rented a car early from Hertz in San Martin and followed the 7 lakes route, stopping at the view points and lakes along the way. We apoted to do the long gravel road to Villa Traful which we found that the road and lake views was more entertaining than the small village at the end but there are plenty... More

Especially now that the new road is finished. The lakes and mountains are spectacular, especially Lago Espejo Chico, which is slightly off the main road (2km)

This must be one of the top 10 drives in the world. Short flight to San Carlos de Bariloche from Buenos Aires. Hire car and you are off! We stayed at Puerto Manzano, San Martin de Los Andes and Bariloche. Ruta 40 is amazing.

We did it with a rental car and it was great. Beautiful scenery road. Make sure to stop at the lakes for a short break and a swim if the weather is good.
