San Martin Square, Centenial Square & Lacar Lake Port
Mar 2019
Visiting San Martin de los Andes is getting in touch with a continuos evolving small mountain town which little by little is becoming into a city without loosing its " mountain town" ADN. Everything is at a walking distance and close to main San Martin Square, you´ll find Centennial Square, which in this time of year ( As well as in spring), you´ll see its garden full of colorfull variety of roses. Is a magic place to walk around or just to seat on a bench and let the time pass by. It is very relaxing and enjoyable in a sunny day. A few block from tehre, you´ll find Lake Lacar port of San Martin de los Andes, from where you can take a lake tour on a catamaran or on a sailing boat. If yopu prefer more sports, you can row, kayak or just sail, as wind is always present top give you a hand. All this front side of the end of town were it founds the broad side end of lake too, and where the port is located, a wide pedestrian promenade had been set up, in order to create a fantastic walking and enjoyable are, just facing the small beach that precedes the clear waters of the lake. Thsi open space, had turn into a meeting point for tourist and locals, just to stay there relaxing and enjoying the free time: A coupel of well located cafes & restaurants, offer you all day different kind of food, while you enjoy the view. In case you prefer some more light and casual, a few food trucks are allowed to stay there to satisfy the needs of tourists and locals, So check the weather and be ready to spend your next free and sunny day in San Martin de los Andes !! Have fun !!!

Beautiful Town

Certainly San Martin de los Andes is a good place to spend a few days disconnected from everything, if you like the gastronomy San Martin is the perfect place offers you a motorbike of restaurants to enjoy a good meal, there are a lot of chocolates that are an icon of the south of Argentina. You can walk quietly through the streets as there are many tourists. I recommend going with family or friends as it is not a place to tourist alone. In most stores you can pay with dollars, real or Chilean pesos in the case of foreigners and of course with Argentine pesos. I recommend you go prepared for the wind because there are times of the year when there is a lot of wind. If you don't know anything about San Martin the main Street is San Martin Avenue where you will find the main shops, restaurants, chocolate stores and Banks. It is the busiest street and if you walk in car you can leave the car parked in the street without problem as it is safe

Major Plaza in city center But.

In my opinion far too much area was given over to the Statue of San Martin but more specifically the area around the base of the monument. Also the perimeter is all but totally made up of those wooden shops. Albeit a very relevant Plaza along this major street.

This is a great place to visit while in San Martin de los Andes

Typical landscape from a town 'plaza', nice to know, nice to stay for a quick while.
There are craftsman shops around the place for you to buy some arts from the zone.
Prices are good or reasonable.

Downtown city

Nice place at city downtown, it is a landmark of the city with the best restaurants nearby. San Martin is a city to know walking since it is very small but very cozy.

There was not much happening on the Sunday that we visited. Maybe because Argentina were playing in their 1st game of the 2015 World Rugby?

This town can be very windy! Take a thick jacket.

Where everything happens in San Martín de los Andes!
Jun 2015 • Friends
It is not a big square, but it is at "Plaza San Martín" that everything happens at this Patagonian town! Here, locals and tourists get together. The square honors General José de San Martín, an Argentinean hero and famous as the "Libertador de América". In 2010, at his bicentennial, the square was totally renovated and also reinaugurated. Stroll along its gardens, fountains and the magnificent equestrian statue of General José de San Martín. And don't forget to take a look at the small artisans' stands, at one of the sides of "Plaza San Martín". Enjoy!
