About
Estancia Huechahue is a family owned working cattle ranch located in Northern Patagonia, Argentina. Easily reached from San Carlos de Bariloche and San Martin de los Andes in the Lake District, Huechahue is a perfect addition to your Patagonian itinerary. Come to horseback ride, fly fish, take cooking classes, golf, or just to relax at a traditional Estancia. As a working cattle ranch, Huechahue is a wonderful place to experience traditional estancia life. About 900 head of Hereford cattle and 80 horses are spread over 15,000 acres. Traditional Argentine cowboys, or gaucho’s, roam the ranch, tending to the animals and joining guests on rides and cattle drives. The farm itself is virtually self-sufficient. Water is drawn from an aquifer and electricity from a turbine. Much of the food served at Huechahue comes from the surrounding land. We offer a B&B option of hotel room with breakfast included. Lunch and dinner are optional and paid for separately. We would be happy to help you plan your activities while you are here. Other guests like an all-inclusive package which includes activities like horseback riding or fly fishing. Guests can be assured of excellent services and a warm welcome. The atmosphere at Huechahue is relaxing and genial. Eight guest cabins are spread out through the orchard, a short stroll from the main lodge. Guests gather in the dining room for meals, or the large "quincho" for asados and grill outs over an open fire. We hope to see you soon!

Highlight of our trip
Dec 2019
We stayed here for four days and it was a highlight of our trip to Argentina. . Its a beautiful setting and the long days riding were great fun. I am a novice rider and my husband is very skilled but the team catered for our different levels of ability really well. Every day was different and we loved exploring the beautirful coutnryside on horseback. The food in the Estancia was great, delicous home cooking including a barbecue on two nights, and healthy but hearty lunches. Our room was large and very comfortable. Overall a really special place and we would love to come back

Absolutely incredible visit, highly recommend
Nov 2019 • Friends
I've just spent 3 days at Huechahue on holiday with a friend and we've had the most wonderful time. We were genuinely very sad to leave which I think speaks volumes for what a fabulous time we had.
The estancia is situated in absolutely breath taking scenery. The accommodation was spotless, comfortable and cosy but it was the staff and the animals that really made it special. Josefina was the most wonderful host and guide and Mariana's cooking was amazing (think we put on a few kgs during our stay!) and everyone went out of their way to make sure we were comfortable and had everything we needed. We are both experienced riders and thought the horses were fantastic and the riding was just out of this world. The riding routes were well planned and each day we explored different areas where Josefina pointed out all the wildlife and took us to explore areas of interest like the caves and condor nests in the cliff face. And the review wouldn't be complete without mentioning the dogs, who were wonderful entertainment and great for a cuddle! Thanks to everyone at Huechahue for an incredible few days, hopefully one day we'll be back!

What a wonderful ranch in a quiet corner of this great country
Mar 2019 • Solo
I spent 5 nights at the Estancia in March
Travelling alone is something I am used to, but not everywhere caters for solo travellers well. Jane does!
We had a varied riding programme and saw all the different parts of the property. Got the chance to do some cattle work on the horses, as well as see Cave paintings & Condors.
My room was excellent- spacious & comfortable with a large bathroom.
The Estancia manages to offer great food and service while still being homely & informal.
My horse was super & well matched. Thoroughly recommended

If like my wife and I you have diverse interests then Huechhue is for you
The riding Patagonia style is excellent and if you like fly fishing then the rivers are excellent too
Add in river rafting great food that is all inclusive and a great asado (look that up yourselves) then this place is for you
All staff can’t do enough for you
A special mention for Josefina Veronica and Laurita who made the stay memorable

A beautiful wilderness almost all to ourselves - wonderful
Nov 2016 • Couples
We stayed four nights at the estancia and managed to fit in three big horse rides and a day's fly fishing. During this time we didn't see another human being - only condors, eagles, vultures, deer, wild boar, llamas (and trout). The scenery was breathtaking and the terrain sometimes quite challenging but we were always expertly guided, particularly by Amelia. Neither of us is an expert rider and we felt a real sense of achievement by the end.
The hospitality was first rate and we enjoyed delicious food that was not only home cooked but almost all home grown, including blue eggs for breakfast!
Don't tell anyone, but Jane's ranch is a real gem.

Amazing experience - what a beautiful farm with beautiful people
Nov 2016 • Couples
It's hard to know where to start, other than to say Jane, Oli, Diana and Amelia make you feel like you are part of the ranch family. They look after their animals with the same passion they take care of their guests. Diana did all of our laundry, whilst cooking superb meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner - horse riding sessions each morning and afternoon (if you wish), fly fishing with Pedro, or just sit in the beautiful gardens and read a book or relax in the sunshine. Either way, Jane will make sure you are doing whatever exercise you wish to help out with on the farm. You will need at least 3 days, if not a week!

A unique place

Well, where shall I start. Didnt know what to expect. Amazing home cooked food with local ingredients (try the dulce de leche icecram made with real milk and eggs). Fabulous views and rides. The guides are excellent and easy going. Go up on the horses to the caves and you will certainly be up for a surprise. The staff is friendly and very attentative. Everything has been thought to the last detail. Rural with a lovely touch of style and personalised attention. Put this way, my wife doesnt like horses or riding and she was riding on her own day two...what else to say

Wonderful experience & highly recommended
Jan 2016 • Couples
We spent two nights on the estancia while driving south on route 40. It was a wonderful experience where we enjoyed life on a working ranch. We were able to fit in many horse rides (including the afternoon we arrived and the morning of the day we left), each of them a different adventure - ride and hike up a nearby mountain, riding to caves with historic rock paintings, herding cattle that were being separated and sold, and long stretches of cantering along the river. As a couple, our riding ability is very different but they managed to arrange things so that we each had a great experience, and the horses were an absolute pleasure. The setting and vast amounts of land are exquisite, and the food served exceptional, where they make use of the produce from the ranch. One night we also had a traditional asado. Jane and all the staff were very friendly and laid-back. Upon arrival, you may get the feeling that there is no plan for you and you might not get your money's worth, but in time the agenda falls into place and you'll find yourself either riding, eating, or enjoying a drink on the porch and admiring the scenery. This was a very memorable few days of our trip and highly recommended!

Best holiday ever!!
Dec 2014 • Solo
This was the best holiday ever Jane and the Gauchos were amazing the views are something I will always keep in mind. I met some amazing people in the group and we still keep in touch. The horses were just amazing so willing and sure footed I've always wanted to go back but it's just so far away. The food was excellent couldn't fault anything about this holiday! I was there in 2009 and it's one of my best memories

Great Place, People and Horses!
Nov 2015 • Couples
I spent 4 nights / 3 days at the estancia last week with my husband. We had a great time, even my husband, who wasn't able to ride, but seemed to enjoy standing around in water trying to catch fish..and taking around 500 photos (none of any fish).

The estancia is extremely well run by the owner Jane and her staff, who were all very welcoming. We very quickly felt at home, with lots of sofas and places to sit around, which made it easy to get to know the other guests and talk through the various experiences at the end of each day. Dinner was late, which we rather liked as we were able to sit around drinking (drinks are all included in the price), talking and generally relaxing. The food was always good, especially the BBQ in Jane's specially designed-and-refined over many years asado room, complete with the mandatory in Patagonia 'chuck coins in the frog mouth game' (which is, apparently, a toad).

I went riding on all 3 days and was very impressed by the horses: they are very well cared for and in excellent condition. I rode 2 different horses during my stay: they were both well trained, very easy to ride and impressive in their ability to walk through and across some of the rocky and/or steep terrain that we rode over. The same seemed to be true of all of the horses that came out with us and they are all a credit to their trainer (Luis, I believe). We took part in a little light cow and horse herding, which was fun, and had some nice long canters when the going allowed. Amelia came with us as our guide and she was easy going and knowledgeable, coming from a ranching/horsey background. She had us all laughing a few times as we rode around pretending to be gauchos, badly.

The scenery was spectacular, with the volcano and rivers coming into view as we rode over the hills, winding up and down over the valleys. We had a couple of lunches out on the ride, one with whatever we had been able to carry in our saddle bags and the other where Jane, friends and staff set up a great lunch under some trees, with lovely food, including Coronation Chicken (!), proper cutlery and wine.

We went rafting one afternoon and had a riotous time going down a river with our English speaking raftload of people v a Spanish speaking one, this was arranged by the estancia through a rafting company and was well organised and a lot of fun.

Overall, I highly recommend a stay at Huechahue and wish that I could have stayed there longer, there was lots more to see and do e.g. I never got to see the 3 new foals!
