Cerro Chapelco was a fantastic ski and snowboard resort for all skill levels. It consists of fields for beginners, intermediate and advanced. There are several restaurants located on the slopes, that offer meals that please all ages. Lessons are available for ski and snowboarders of all different levels. The fields are consistently groomed and maintained, allowing a smoother run.

I thoroughly enjoyed the days I spent on the mountain, and definitely recommend it as a must do activity throughout your winter stay in San Martin de Los Andes.

“Absolutely excellent”

We drove the 18 kilometers just to see the ski area. Found that it was full of activities. Did the toboggan run twice with our two young boys. Had a beer and fries in one of the many places to eat.

Activities
Ride the chair and take a toboggan down the ski slope.
Archery- mountain biking- climbing wall- mini golf- canopy- horse back rides etc etc

Good place to take the kids for the whole day. !

Poor snow fall meant there was little snow on the lower slopes but there was plenty higher up. The ski rental shops in San Martin de los Andes transport your skis to the slopes, and you can store your kit up at the slopes overnight - complete with a boot warmer.
The runs are perhaps not quite as well marked as those in Europe, but once you are aware of this it's fine. The queues for the lifts are a little chaotic - but just remember where you are and enjoy it! There is some lovely tree skiing, and broad runs to suit every level skier.
The Graeff restaurant halfway up the mountain can get very busy at lunchtime, so go early - it serves excellent empanadas, and good sized portions. We enjoyed watching the first part of the local Tetrathlon, and even with part of the pistes sectioned off, we still had plenty of areas to ski.

First we had to wait an hour for the gondola to get fixed. Then it is extremely poorly ran. Not enough employees to keep things organized. This allowed extremely rude people to jump the line. We were with an 8 year old. It is the resorts responsibility to not allow line cutting. For the amount of people on the hill, the parking is not large enough. Evidently the province had to give some of this land to a group of chilean natives (mapuches) therefore shrinking the size of the parking lot and making it almost impossible to get in and out. This also caused people to have to park on the street, which should be illegal, turning the road into a very dangerous one car lane for two way traffic in the mountains with curves and lots of snow. Not a pleasant experience for all the money we had to pay.

In my recent trip to Chapelco, I found the ski resort to be poorly run. Its management was misleading, even dishonest, when it came to describing the amount of snow and conditions at the mountain.

I decided to go to Chapelco to ski with my family (after visiting its website daily from June 29th to July 1st to check the amount of snow available, as it was the early season). The website spoke of a "GRAND OPENING" and posted pictures of a mountain full of snow, and only in much finer print did it mention that only 2 lifts were open, without being too specific about which runs were open. Once we arrived at the moutain, we immediately noticed that the pictures posted on the website were completely misleading and most likely taken during a previous season, as the amount of snow on the mountain was not even close to what the website showed and described. The mountain had little to no snow at all.

You could argue that the website has webcams, and that it has no obligation to post recent pictures. However the webcams are placed in such a way that they don't show the runs with patches of dirt on them. Yes, we were naive to assume that the pictures were recent, but if they wanted to be completely honest with its visitors, they would have put a disclaimer on the pictures stating that they were not recent.

They place pictures and state conditions in a way that is misleading. In my opinion it's just false advertising.

On our last day (June 6th), management decided to keep the mountain open, even under dangerous conditions, as there was little to no snow left (above freezing temperatures weren't helping), with huge patches of dirt every few feet. When we asked if we could be somehow compensated (eg: a discount on tickets for another season, or just something small...), they bluntly told us their policies don't allow for any re-imbursement or small little token of appreciation (not even a cup of hot chocolate), under any circumstance at all.

My opinion is that management's only goal is to have people go and pay, without any regard for their possible disapointment later, or even safety.

I heard from locals that the mountain is run by an Asian group that couldn't care less about good service or customer satisfaction / loyalty. Locals are extremely nice and warm, and they are supposedly very upset with the resort's management (apparently I'm not the only unhappy customer).

San Martin de los Andes is beautiful and I would love to come back. However, needless to say, I won't be going back to Cerro Chapelco to ski.

We traveled with multiple families and all rented our gear in Chapelco! Highly recommended. They are knowledgeable and great with kids. My daughter finished a day of classes cold and tired and the person who received her gear gave her a great pep talk which encouraged her to go back the next day!!!

The problem there is the climate change. I have been there for the first time in 1974 and now a days the snow is starting almost in July so it has been very risky planning a ski vacation earlier than late July or early August and from mid/late August chances are to get spring conditions.

It is unfortunate to have tourists taken for fools. We had payed the full weekly fare, and expected to good receive adequate service for a full Chapelco experience and received only 20% of it.

My family, kids and friends arrived to Cerro Chapelco on Sunday 1st of July, 2018. It snowed early during the week. Snow was initially excellent and had a great skiing experience. Unfortunately, the resort had only two ski-lifts opened during the whole week. When we enquired about this, we were told that the reason was lack of snow on the top slopes. Yet, when next weekend came and high season started, suddenly we had the ski-lifts working. Obviously, it wasn't for lack of snow, because it hadn't snowed any further.

Snowboarding at Cerro Chapelco was very good. We got fresh snow, lot of powder and nice weather. Resort structure is good and equipment are new. Prices are high, but still lower than Bariloche offering way better tracks then Cerro Catedral. Lots of trees, what are the highlight!

This Cerro is a bit far from the village but the access is pretty good. The road is safe.
I do not ski, so the idea was to enjoy the day with my son on the snow. So we rented a sled and played with him for hours. You can do that in an area before the entrance (so do not need to pay the access).
Also there are some alternative activities inside the station. You should pay the entrance and also for the activities (sled with dogs, racket walk).
If you want to have ski or snowboard clases, you should look at the program in the website so there are packages for minimun 3 days. Private classes are very expensive!
The restaurants are better than I've seen in other places like Bayo and Catedral.
Therefore, if you want to spend a day playing with you kids on the snow this place is a good option.
