This is the easiest to reference landmarks in the center of the city. Take you about 10 minutes or less to see it. But, many people will use this as a reference point. Argentina street has a large median/small park in the middle. There are often small stalls selling local goods and/or bands here.

Neuquen's focal point

To be sure, I have seen much bigger and more impressive monuments in Latin American cities but there is something really special about the San Martin monument in Neuquén. I visited this monument this morning, quite early, when the sun was just starting to rise, and the streets of Neuquén were gloomy and quiet. I sat for an hour watching the colors change and brighten on the monument, and I have to say I had a bit of a "moment".

Few people travel to Neuquén from outside Argentina, unless to barrel on through to places like Bariloche and points south. Neuquén is more than just a good place to shake off the dust, and I encourage travelers yearning to enter the "real" Patagonia to spend a day or two in Neuquén. And if they do, they must of course visit the San Martin monument on a winter's sunrise.

What's so special about this place?

There is a monument like this in every city in Argentina.

You can even visit his grave in Buenos Aires at the Iglesia De La Recoleta.

I would hate to make this comparison, but San Martin is like a god in Argentina. What else can I say? I mean he was a historic figure carried to the extreme.

So don't worry if you miss this place. There is another one down the road.
