If you are into dinosaurs!
Feb 2020
A distance away from Puerto Madryn in the not so quaint/picturesque town of Trelew. The small museum is interesting, especially if you are into dinosaurs! The dinosaur skeleton replics are excellent!

This small modern museum is about 40 minutes by road from Puerto Madryn. It is interesting and well presented, with information in English and Spanish. There is a David Attenborough video to begin with, which relates the discovery, nearby, of the biggest species of dinosaur yet found. Details are also given of the science behind the find and the stages of the research.
There are many dinosaur species on display in the rooms and the models are interesting.
As you approach the outskirts of the town, there is a vast model too.
A small gift shop is a bonus.
The town itself, and nearby Gaimin, have history and, the latter, Welsh heritage.

Brilliant museum and home of Titanosaurus

This museum is great. Make sure you watch the BBC film with David Attenborough about finding the fossils of the largest dinosaur ever. At the moment they need to build a aircraft hanger to house the life size skeleton but still a great place.

Very good museum but mostly lacking in English translations unfortunately.

We three British middle aged guys were in Trelew as part of our exploring Welsh Patagonia for the second time since 2005. This was a new dinosaur museum for us (we visited one in 2005 elsewhere). We checked out of the Touring Club Hotel at 11:50 and made our way over.

We had popped by the day before but we only had an hour but the higher than usual prices meant we did not even try to go in. This time we had plenty of time but one of us decided it was too much at 260pesos/£5.50. Two of us entered the modern building and it was very well laid out. We were told by the friendly desk person that a half hour video was about to start in the cinema at noon. Luckily we were in time, popped in and lo and behold (British) National Treasure David Attenborough was presenting his documentary (in English with Spanish subtitles) on Gigantosaurus, based on the work by MEF who restored the largest dinosaur skeleton ever found. It was half an hour well spent as we left to see lots of skeletons and models of smaller dinosaurs and fish/dolphins/reptiles set in scenes of the habitat of their times.

It was all quite spectacular (stand at the mouth of a carnivore like T Rex) but there was no logical progression in the time line in terms of following a path. I nearly missed the upstairs gallery (as it was through a small door by the cinema) but the view from above and of the sea creatures was impressive.

There was only a replica thigh bone of Gigantosaurus (which was impressive enough as taller than a very tall person!) as the original is safe in a huge warehouse near its discovery place). On a coach somewhere we saw a huge replica by the road with a car park nearby full of cars and tourists.

An interesting feature was the workshops and research labs associated with the MEF being seen through large windows where archeologists prepare and preserve the fossils.

The gift shop was well stocked and my friend bought a 'large' t-shirt at 750pesos/£15 which is expensive but a wearable souvenir. Unfortunately it was not 'large' enough for him so I have it now!

Well worth a visit even at the pricevas the work of the MEF is so important internationally and the building is obviously expensive and needs maintenance. The staff also need to be remunerated for their expert work.

we were not sure what to expect but then found we did not have enough time to see the movie at the end. The tours are in Spanish , very little English is given, but the Movie (David Attenborough) is in English and very interesting. Really worth the time!

You should get a mindset before entering that the stated purpose of this museum is limited..... a concentration on the paleontology of Patagonia. In that regard, they do an excellent job!

Upon entering the circular lobby, make sure to see the display in the center of the floor. There is a complete dinosaur egg, but also one that has been cut in half. Over time, minerals have seeped into the egg creating a geode. One cannot miss the gigantic bone against the wall or the reptile/birds also in the lobby.

It is a small museum but packed with fossils, both real and replica, of the flora and fauna found in Patagonia up to the Paleozoic Era. The highlight is probably the Titanosaur Patagotitan, the largest dinosaur yet discovered, but there are many others as well.

There is a well done film in English by David Attenborough, a window to watch scientists at work, and a small gift shop. What we don’t see are their many programs.... research, traveling exhibits, cultural events. Unfortunately, all the signage is in Spanish so non-speakers miss a lot. For this reason I rated it a 4.

You drive into Trelew on a Sunday and everything closed!! Except a little joy! This Dinosaur museum!! State run and well laid out with extremely helpful staff! Everything you ever wanted to know about Dinosaurs! We were told they could help us by putting on an English professor presentation of the discovery of the largest dinosaur fossil in the world. David Attenborough with a BBC documentary- felt like being at home!! Nice little shop for souvenirs and also a pleasant coffee shop too. Well worth a visit!
