Magnificent colony of Magellanic penguins with excellent walkways and lookouts that enable you to get very close to them
Nov 2017 • Couples
This Magellanic Penguin Reserve and Rookery is located approximately 30 kilometres south of Camarones along a dirt track that is quite rough in places.

Our Ponant cruise ship anchored for a day off Camorones and the passengers were first ferried ashore in zodiacs and then travelled by coaches to the Cabo Dos Bahias Nature Reserve.

A very well constructed and partly elevated steel walkway then covered the approximately 1.5 kilometre distance from the car park to a large lookout just above the shore line. On both sides of this walkway, along almost its entire length, were hundreds of penguins either sitting on nests, standing guard, walking, mating or just going into the sea. Being slightly elevated, the walkway enabled the penguins to walk underneath it so that they had unimpeded access from their nests to the sea. Quite amazing to see them sitting on their eggs and being totally uninterested in the approximately 100 people who were watching them intently.

From the lookout at the end of the walkway you could see a colony of sea lions resting on a nearby, very flat and very small island.

On the way to and from Camarones, apart from sheep, we also saw a variety of other wildlife including Guanacos, grey foxes, Rheas (a member of the ostrich family) plus caracarus and other birds.

An excellent excursion and a very well maintained Penguin nature reserve.

Surrounded by penguins

Nothing to dislike here! Great spot for nature lovers and adventure seekers! Lots of spots where you can be on your own and enjoy the sea and the local fauna (guanacos, ostriches, and lots of penguins in the natural reserve). A must for lovers of Patagonia!
