Real name: Catedral de la Encarnación de María. Inaugurated in 1856 by Fray Mamerto Esquiú.
Its foundations date back to the second foundation of the city in 1685. Original style: Hispano-American colonial baroque. After its later modifications eclectic style (although its architectural forms from the neoclassical current are characteristic of the architecture of the years after the Revolution of May 1810). With neoclassical façade, Doric columns but also details of Ionic and Corinthian order (Doric in the lower floor, Ionic in the middle and Corinthian in the upper one).
The marble frontispiece, in the shape of a triangle, represents the Exodus when the Israelites bring to Moses clusters of grapes, perhaps in allusion to the fertility of Tucumán.
You can also admire a statue of the Virgin Mary and inside the wooden cross of the first foundation of Tucumán. Worth seeing and appreciating are the ancient images of the vice patrons San Judas Tadeo, San Simón (both were previously in Ibatín), San Miguel and the Virgen del Carmen.
It is very spacious inside, assisted by the huge columns that also provide considerable natural light.
According to the customs of the time, some characters from the history of Tucumán are buried there (Bishop José Eusebio Colombres, founder of the sugar industry, and prominent Argentine heroes of the wars for independence to name but a few). Its towers with oriental reminiscences are of Russian style, slightly onions. The clock that is appreciated is of English origin and used to belong to the Cabildo.
National Historic Monument since 1941.
It is one of the three oldest cathedrals in the country and inspired many churches in our territory.

Beautiful Catedral, worth a 30 minute visit to check the nice architecture. Did not like some ladies inside, begging for money.

Beautiful Church with your typical vaulted ceilings and naive. The style is very much localized to what we know for the south American ares. The Doric columns create an awareness of space. Certainly worthy of a visit.

También recordá que hay fiestas donde está abierta fuera de ese horario.
Y si tenés un rato a una cuadra está al Iglesia donde Belgrano dejó la bandera del norte.
