Pretty, historic church close to Plaza 9 de Julio
Jan 2020
Parroquia San Juan Bautista de la Merced is about a 5 minute walk from the Plaza 9 de Julio. It features tall Neo-gothic arches and stained glass windows, and is worth a quick gander since it's so close.
Inside, look for the Cross of the Battle of Salta and its inscription "A los vencedores y vencidos" (To the victors and the vanquished). In 1813, Governor Feliciano Chiclana placed a wooden cross on the common grave where the fallen soldiers of both sides were buried after the Battle of Salta (led by General Belgrano), one of the decisive victories in the war for independence.

*For more history, take the tour of La Iglesia San Francisco (just off the plaza). If you are more interested in cathedral architecture, check out The Salta Cathedral in the plaza, and the Iglesia de la Candelaria de la Vina (a 10 minute walk away).

Enjoy Salta!

Timing did not allow me to return later in the day to see the interior. This Neo-Gothic church was built in 1914. It houses the image of the Virgin of the Merced. |Celebrations are held in her honour on September 24th. It also holds the Cross of the Battle of Salta, placed in the ground on February 20, 1813 by General Belgrano. It is about a 5M walk from the Plaza of July 9th, continuing down the road in front of the Cabildo to the right as you look at the building.
