Although I am from Argentina, I had only been here with my parents when I was a little child. I returned at the end of 2019 after about 40 years and many memories came back to my mind. The winding road 33 from Salta to Cachi is pretty much the same, well maintained with the section called "Cuesta del Obispo" still a gravel road. The views are great, very green in this area and relatively high. We are used to cliffs and some dangerous mountain roads so it looked not so extreme to us but for anyone not used to high altitudes it can be quite impressive. It becomes a little monotonous until you reach Cardones National park and the Tin Tin straight where the land becomes barren and it is all spotted with huge cardones that take so many years to grow.

An incredible and magical place, it is part of the route you take from Salta towards Payogasta and Cachi. With several stops, each with a more breathtaking view than the other, it allows you to more fully observe the breadth of the mountains in the northwest region of Argentina (NOA), allowing you to reflect on our insignificance in the face of these natural monuments. Caution is necessary due to the number of curves and the frequent occurrence of fog, which impairs visibility. Ideal for stopping (remember, in a safe place), relaxing and having a drink.

Having read a variety of reviews on Tripadvisor about this route, I lost a night's sleep worrying about how safe or not the Cuesta del Obispo might be. We were travelling from Salta to Molinos so had to go up the Cuesta. Please be assured/reassured that this road is perfectly manageable and really not dangerous at all if you drive sensibly. The photo at the top makes it look dodgy, but don't be put off by it! Yes, a good proportion is "ripio" or gravel, but again, don't let this put you off. It is a fabulous route, with amazing scenery - you shouldn't miss it! It's an exhilarating, unmissable experience. Stop at the top, at the pass, take some photos and buy a souvenir! There were quite a few other tourists, mainly Argentinians, on the Cuesta too (it's not overcrowded), which is reassuring. (We travelled around NW Argentina in July and came across very few foreign tourists - it is off the beaten track to be honest. I should say that once you reach the pass there are no more dramatic drops, but a gentle easy onward road. Don't worry about the Cuesta, just do it and enjoy!! My partner and I absolutely loved it, and would do it again at the drop of a hat.

We rented a car and drove ruta 40 from Salta to Molinos and then onto Cafayate. This is an amazing drive with spectacular views. The road can be challenging as it is gravel (and in need of grading in some parts) and winds through the mountains on a narrow road however it is drivable without 4WD. In some cases especially after you pass Cuesta del Obispo driving was very slow as the road was washboard like. We were grateful that we chose to split the journey and stay in Molinos as the entire trip took about 12 hours. Well worth it!

When in Salta at least one tour to the north and one tour to the south has to be undertaken. So taking the North Tour to Salina Grandes is very much the one to see. My suggestion would be to book locally, there are English translators for most tours, we booked with Nordic Travel and were not disappointed. It’s also more economical to book locally than through an operator before your arrive. The Salinas Grandes tour is a ten hour round trip through the mountains at altitudes of up to 4250 metres. So if altitude sickness is a problem then you will need something to help with this, several people were ill on our bus at various times. It’s also a drive that involved constant switchbacks as you ascend to Cuesta del Obispo and so travel sickness can be an issue. The coaches tend to be smaller 16/18 person units so are fairly sociable affairs. We tended to b the only English speakers on the tours. Having said all of that the scenery on this tour is magnificent, the variety of environment, the historical importance of the area and the current importance of the salt flats at Salinas Grande has to be seen. It is possible to undertake the drive by hiring a car and driving there oneself. It’s a 3.5 hour drive in each direction to Salinas and about an hour shorter each way to Cuesta del Obispo. A great trip, well organised by Nordic and well worth the effort.

The drive to Cuesta del Obispo offers some stunning views, reaching approximately 3400 meters above sea level. When going there from Salta you will find very diverse landscapes that vary from jungles to deserts. If you like to drive, definitely rent a car and do it yourself, it's well worth it! When you reach the Cuesta you will likely find several people selling their goods, such as llama salami, goat cheese, books, jewelry and crafts. Take some time to buy some stuff, get to know them and then continue your journey. An important tip: Try to avoid doing the drive right before the sunset, as it's possible that everything will be covered in clouds and you won't be able to see where you're going!

We started in Salta on a sunny day and it took us less than 4 hours to reach Cachi. Lovely drive all the way to the highest point, Piedra del Molinos, 3457 m. The road is narrow at times and there are many sharp curves, but it is not difficult at all. Landscape keeps changing - green and fertile - dry and brown, variety of colours and shape of mountains all the way. Try to pass the highest point before late afternoon when clouds are gathering. Some restaurants and hostels along the road. One of many enjoyable rides in Salta and Jujuy.

We took a guided tour for this attraction, which turned out to be the right choice. It takes you from Salta through beautiful landscape to a small town called Cachi.
The tour give you the opportunity to devote your full attention to the beauty of the ever changing landscape.
During a stress-free day-trip you get to see a lot of what the area has to offer in breath taking landscape from the "painted dessert" to the surreal cactus-forest.
For someone who does not get the chance on riding the "Tren a las Nubes" this is a great way for seeing what you would see there : Rugged landscape, observation points, the "painted dessert".
The fun part was : A stretch of magnetic road, which literally pulled the car ( engine was switched off !!! 15 passengers on board - no kidding !!!! ) up a small hill for about 200 - 300 meters

Cuesta del Obispo is just a wonderful scenic drive along route 33. This is the route towards catchi. We set off in the morning in our two wheel drive rental and headed towards the peak. The road was about 75% smooth with the other 25% (final 20-30km) rough roads. You can see the dust rise when you drive past and i would agree that in bad weather, this route would be more dangerous and you need to proceed with more caution.
The scenery is just beautiful with the backdrop of different mountainous rock and ranges with the various colour formations. We have been to arizona and seem the red rocks there.. But this and the province of Jujuy provides you with a more colourful scenery.
The total drive to the peak from salta took about 2 1/2 hours for us but despite the longish drive, we all definitely felt this was a worthwhile journey.

If you enjoy driving and great vistas, this is the road for you. Traffic is light, hairpin curves are aplenty, and you might reach above the clouds.

Buenos días a Buenos Aires

Written May 15, 2019
