Outstanding trip

Superb trip. It lasts for around 13 hours and as some have said it's best considered in three parts. Part 1 is the journey up to the train where you stop off at a few nice sites and in particular one small town for breakfast. Part 2 is the train journey and lunch. Part 3 is the return to Salta, stopping off at a nice museum and afternoon snack stop. The trip is incredibly professional, safe, well organised and enjoyable. We had done the southern ring to Cafayate by car but still enjoyed the sights and sites. A must for any visit to Salta-highly recommend.

Returned this time to Salta to enjoy the Train to the Clouds. Last time I was there it was not available. It is a really beautiful ride, just make sure you can take in the altitude since it goes up to 4200 meters. Anyway don´t worry there are doctor´s on site if need be. It is very well organized, and worth going.

Tren a las Nubes - Train to the clouds

Great trip. Goes up to 4,200 m.
Unfortunately nowadays it departs/ends at San Antonio de los Cbres (from Saöta you are transferred by bus); train section could be longer (as in former times)!

170km by road to the train.

The train used to run from Salta, but now there is a 170km coach ride by road to San Antonio de las Cobres, where the train actually starts. The road runs alongside the railway track and is very picturesque. The road coaches leave Salta at 7.00am and arrive back at 8pm - a long day. There is a break for breakfast taken in the open air. The train is diesel hauled and includes a bar car and some of the train staff are english speaking and very helpful. The trip climbs to nearly 14,000 feet and an ambulance with oxygen accompanies passengers all of the way from Salta. On returning to San Antonio, there is a break for passengers to buy food. There are very few restaurants not all of equal quality. Rail enthusiasts and those who enjoy a coach ride through interestiing scenery will enjoy the day but it is not for everyone

There were 10 of us in the tour bus,and Juan was our guide and Dante the driver. Juan worked hard to make the experience come alive for us. We had many interesting stops along the way. The only one I did not appreciate was the final stop just outside of Purmamarca. We stopped for a very short time 15 minutes in the beautiful village and then we were taken for 45 minutes to a very run down tourist trap on the main road. Even the bathroom was disgusting. The goods were the same as everywhere else, clearly there was some kind of kickback to the company from us stopping there. This was the only negative aspect. JUan worked hard and we saw an amazing amount of things.I don't really like organized tours but we had very little time so this made sense. I was underwhelmed by the viaduct, removing that and the last stop would save at least 2 hours on a tour that takes 15 hours, much better to come back at 8 pm than 10 pm.
I loved the stop at the boarding school for breakfast, and th etrip to archeological Tastil site was a high point. Salt flats were impressive too.

This experience is unforgetable. The service is excellent and very well organized. There is a bar and you can buy souveniers on board. The views are breathtaking. Local people sell their goods at very good prices. The place is very windy. The flag ceremony is moving. Proud to be Argentinean :)

The train is best for rail enthusiasts. Otherwise, it's too much bus time. For me, I loved the long bus ride as much as the train. Geology on display, rather like Utah+Colorado+Arizona. Yes, the trip is expensive, but the guide and experience was worth it with just one exception: What they call "breakfast" is dreadful, as other reviewers have noted. I think the whole operation is professionally run and I felt confident that the onboard nurses and personnel were well trained and ready for any emergency.

but it was notb worthwhile to visit. The way until the ruines of Santa Rosa was very good and interesting, but the way from there via San Antonio de los cobres was boring. And at the end - just the Bridge
