This is not a recommendation, but a description of how we managed to see the 14-colored mountain, Hornocal. From Tilcara, we took the public tourist bus to Humahuaca. From the bus station, we walked two blocks North (in the direction of travel), then turned right and walked a short distance to the bridge that crosses the river leaving town in... More

But the drive if you are in a standard small manual rental car is long and requires care. Guidebooks and locals tell you it is a 40 minute drive. For us it was closer to 90 minutes and the final 30 minutes was winding up to 4300 meters in 2nd gear pretty much all the way. Not fun. BUT it... More

I note most of the reviews of Serranias del Hornocal are by people with their own transport. I could not find any information anywhere about how to get there independently before I went. The tourist information office in Humahuaca says there are two options. 1. There is an "Excursion" business called Ser Andino just off the plaza that runs transport... More

It's quite far away from the town, but it is the "must to see" in this region. Incredible. Also, you see a lot around when you are driving up (to 4300 m!) and down: beautiful landscape, moutains with very unusual round shape. Right there we met guanacos, first time in this trip. But watch the weather (sky and clouds) before... More

Well... if you come with your own vehicle, you should know that there's a long drive ahead of you!! On dirt road, climbing 4300m mountain !! With close curves!! It is not an easy drive, a lot of it in first gear. Before you go there make sure your tank in full. You can drive there by yourself, but the... More

A really amazing sight and well worth a visit. The colours are amazing and photos don't do it justice. At 4351m it's high up with the colours being more intense next to the deep blue sky. We were told by our local accommodation that the best time to visit is between 2.00pm - 3.00pm which turned out to be perfect... More

This is the most spectacular mountainside I have ever seen, due to the many-colored rock formations. The parking place is at 4371 meters above sea level, so it is high! If you've got enough breath, do walk out to the hilltop on the left, because you get a better panoramic view. It will take you about ½ hour to drive... More

We drove here in a hire car (I would recommend Alamo car hire in Salta, they were just as cheap as some of the dodgier operators and we got a near brand new car and didn't have any problems when returning). The road does go quite high (above 4000m), so only attempt if aclimatised and I would recommend some coca... More

We drove to Humahuaca – about 60 km from Purmarca - to see the Hornocal. Thanks to all the descriptions online on how to get there, we had no problems. The route 73 is rocky! The car stirs up a lot of dust and gets very dirty. It only gently goes uphill at first, then had a few switch backs... More

This is probably the most jaw dropping view point in the whole Quebrada de Humahuaca area. It is not mentioned in any of the guidebooks (astoundingly: enjoy it while it lasts!) and we only heard about it through another couple we met. We'd already spent several days in the area, and thought the scenery couldn't get any better, but this... More
